Isn't StarCraft rated E for Everyone?

To play pretty much any game online in Korea you need to register on a site. When you register, you need to input your Korean identity card number. So they know pretty much everything about who's playing. I guess kids can use their parents' ID numbers but if they get rumbled they'd be in for a LOT of Korean parental beats.
Starcraft is an exception though. It's one of the very few games where you don't need to register.

The Korea Herald article names mostly MMOs but I wonder if they'll widen their range and include Starcraft, a decision that could greatly threaten e-Sports. Why would it greatly threaten e-Sports?
Because you can't go on 6+ hour game binges?
|
they(progamers) can play offline any way (dont they mostly play offline anyway? lol) so it wont really hurt esports that much. still really weird/lame though.

I was thinking maybe it could affect the practice houses? Also, people who are aspiring to become progamers become severely limited in their practice time. 6 hours doesn't seem like enough practice time to become a progamer.
|
I can't see this working but does this include weekends and is this a serious problem in Korea, gaming binges i mean.
|
no its probably not going to affect starcraft at all they don't have your information on this game
you don't even need to install starcraft
and yeah, south korea has THE biggest gaming problem, atleast on the computer

lol so retarded. sensationalist bullshit, creating invisible enemies etc etc.
same as fan death pretty much.
|
Protip: Being passive-aggressive won't endear you to Mods.
Ontopic; Honestly it's not so bad if you can still lan. People who are aspiring progamers know other aspiring progamers so they should still be able to get practice in. It is a bit annoying I'm sure but when you want something badly enough to practice more than six hours a day you can find a way.
|
on my opinion, if something like this stands in between nerds and their games, there are bound to be third party programs/tools/hacks to overcome this barrier.

parents should tell their kids to stop playing so much not the government

This ban could make me glad. Progamers do not need to worry about the ban cause they have Lan and what not. If 6 fucking hours of playing 1 game a day, STRAIGHT, is not enough for a young kid, they need to be regulated. This should to apply to everyone.
I am on the fence about the curfew. What time is it? If it's like at 9 or some dumb shit like that, fuck it. If it's at 12 or any later, I can take it. It just ain't healthy for kids to be staying up past midnight to be playing games for recreation.

Unfortunately some people have shit parents when it comes to setting boundaries and rules. And its to damn expensive and inefficient to make parents of all kids take mandatory parenting classes.

You are acting like they banned games. They did not. From what I understand, you cannot play a game for more than 6 hours straight. If you have got a problem with that time limit, especially if you are a young kid like what Korea is targeting, you need this.

while I'm totally against it personally, in principle it's pretty consistent with how governments try to regulate the behavior of minors in general (forced X amount of schooling, no cigs till age X, no alcohol till age X, etc)

The problem does exist and it is huge.
This is not the solution. Allowing parents to "opt in" to a system that would cut videogames for kids who are addicted would be a positive step (though still not without its own set of issues); forcing a system on everyone and handing all power to the state is not.
|
well Starcraft is rated T so.... uh i got nothing 6 hours is reasonable though. instead of "throttling" they should just have warnings saying "would you like to take a break?" every hour or so.

SC1 might not be affected by this, but SC2 will be =] Of course, if you got an older person to create the account for you, that'd solve everything...?

lol like in MapleStory?
What's that going to do?

i guess this is to control video game addiction in some kids; i hear stories about people dying from overplaying games on the computer, and i guess its to prevent stuff like that from happening. ._. (and also to encourage stork to focus less on WoW and mroe on Sc, hehe ;D)
but still, 6 hours is pretty lenient, i sure as hell cant play any video game for 6 hours straight. <.<

Wow, gotta love over reactive governments. I remember many late nights and long hours playing starcraft and other games during middle and high school. I think it's ridiculous to put a blanket standard on video game playing. Isn't that what parents are for? They don't know a little better how much is too much?

This kind of reminds me of the Great Firewall of China, but on a much smaller scale. I think the government will have a tough time preventing all the work-arounds.

If you're playing any game, MMO's included for six hours at a time, you need this limitation. I've been a big time player on several different MMO's (WoW, Maple, La Tale, other smaller games) up to a few years ago, and i'm literally sick to my stomach after playing for over three hours. The quality of my life (physically, emotionally, and mentally) has improved hundreds of times over since I stopped playing (which took absolutely no effort upon stumbling upon the realization of how much time I was wasting for nothing.) I haven't even had to exert any will over not going back to these games because I realize how terrible they are.
|
I'm sure people who are playing the game for a living will be exempt. The corporations that run ESPORTS must have lobbying power.
|
Guys, the ban lasts or 6 hours, not you can't play for more than 6 hours, which means you can't play certain games for a selected 6 hour period of the day. You can play at all other times. Also, the curfew mainly targets MMORPGs and so won't affect Esports.
|
If parents are allowing their kids to play for 6 hours straight then yeah, maybe there IS need for a state intervention.
|
nice to live in a non retarded country
|
the curfew could be 23 hours a day limit and it wouldnt matter the principle issue here is that the government is forcing people to behave in a certain way and restricting people's freedoms, which is not cool bro
|
Because SC2 is all online right now... i can see this being a problem for the crazies out there. Meaning the people who think sleep (health) < games
|
To be completely honest:
I am almost always a proponent of freedom, democracy, progress and all that. But what it comes to MMORPG's, I can't help but be glad that people will be required at one point to get some food and go to sleep.
|
Does stopping for 1 minute every 5:58 or so count as not playing 6 hours straight? How long exactly of a break is required? If it's just like 30 mins to an hour it doesn't seem too bad.

These parents and their children do not belong to the government. The government exists to protect their rights. As long as they aren't violating other citizen's rights they should be able to do whatever they want. Freedom always has a better outcome than planning.

I'm against this and it falls to parents to be good ones. Enacting your beliefs and way of quality life to your children becomes your job and if you're the one letting them not follow through with their responsibilities and to rot in front of a computer, its the parent's problem. Prioritizing eating properly, brushing your teeth, sleeping and other things that are necessary to quality life should be, I hope to god, common sense. It's things like this that give gaming a bad name, however it's not up to the government to hand-hold us in being humans. It's our jobs (and our parents, if one is a naive 15 year old)

This has already been implement in Thailand. How it works is when you sign up for an game account(almost all Asia games) you need some sort equivalent to your social security # in USA. So, game servers only allowing users accessing to X-Y time depends on your age.
Also to add, in Thailand is it against the law for Internet cafe to allow students in DURING school times and late at night.
This result in, kids using parents/grandparent SSN to sign up an account. And internet cafe offer cloths, for kids to switch out of theirs uniform during school hours.
The system might not be the same, but this is just an idea how it was done here in Thailand.
EDIT: The system was design for kids below 18, the rest have no restriction.
|
This may be weird by western standards but it's not that out of the ordinary in Asia. Historically there's always been a tradition of centralized, powerful government there. You can argue this is good or bad, but really its just a different system of governance. I think a lot of the outrage and 1984 allusions, particularly in this case, are misplaced.
