I love the chart.
It made me discount the whole article.
Psychology is so dumb.
pyrogenetix: If I'm following what you're saying, then dopamine is the body's reward saying that you've done something good. Therefore sex is good due to the dopamine rush. Therefore "sex addicts" are fucking awesome.

it's just basic biology, males are programmed to have sex as much as possible to impregnate as many women as possible (it's called life).
I think we've come quite far from basic biology though because we can actually think and not just act. We don't see someone like Idra construct strategies in order to get laid 5 times/day. Why? It doesn't matter THAT much to people nowadays.
Anything can become an addiction IF you use something in order to fill up some hole in yourself. Whether it's food, sex, Starcraft etc

Sex is a key part of the life cycle, it seems odd to call it an addiction. Although maybe that criticism isn't valid now that we make sure not to have babies.
|
Sex isn't an addiction, its just more Christian propaganda to force you to think that the good things in life are wrong.
|
Everyone who says that it isn't and can't be an addiction most likely don't get laid at all.
|
I suppose the view of a sex addiction is like any other. It's when continuing to do it as regularly as you do has a detrimental affect on your life. I mean it's not bad for you, but people developing an obsession with it, to the point where they stop thinking about other things, can cause problems I'd imagine.
|
Hm, I don't think a lot of you guys understand the term addiction. No one said that sex per se is bad but when you cannot think about anything else than how to get laid, eventually get laid and still have the urge to have more sex until your penis burns, then we are talking about the term addiction.
Sex can become addictive in a similar way to alcohol and illegal drugs. During sex, our bodies release a powerful cocktail of chemicals that make us feel good. Some people get addicted to these chemicals and become obsessed with getting their next fix - their next sexual high. As with other addictions, the body also gets used to these chemicals, so the sufferer needs increasing amounts of sex to achieve the same buzz.
|
Yeah, point being:
It's not the actual addiction per se but the feel-good chemicals (dopamin etc) it results in. Therefore you can be addicted to almost anything as long as you get a rush from it. Sex addiction is also about being acknowledged and some people with a very low sense of self esteem (both males and females) turn to sex as a way to get comfort and recognition. While that's ok if you're in love, having sex multiple times/day with different partners in the long run isn't that fun. You end up feeling like a piece of trash
|
I don't know... never had sex....
But, seeing that people can get addicted to almost anything (dog food, starcraft, facebook), I guess sex can be an addiction.
|
Addiction means that someone is a slave to some activity. This often means that it consumes a shitload of addict`s time but not always .
I hold a degree of intolerence towards all these addict concepts because they are mostly completely misunderstood, retarded and sensless.
Ie - when you work towards some goal and it requires you to take your time - do you say you are fucking addicted ? No, you work towards a goal . Yet almost everyone will tell that you are addicted just because you spend too much and it can be really annoying when they try to distract you and even think they are doing a good thing.

dopamine -> Nucleus accumbens = potential addiction
I dont see anyone doubting that gambling addiction is real, so why couldnt you be addicted to sex? That said Im still somewhat skeptical about it.
|
Yeah, addictions are very contextual and this actually goes for alot of the psychiatric "illnesses".
Someone talking to jesus is not schizophrenic, he's devoted.
A pretty typical sex addict would be Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck. He's a guy who was molested by his dad and because of his traumatic childhood he has created an strong ego, to the point of being narcissistic. Also his sex-life deals with the rejection and hurt he had to endure growing up and he has a huge void inside of him that needs filling up. Sex seems to be more something that he just does rather than enjoys doing.
Addiction is never clear-cut. There are many different reasons why people get addicted to different things. I believe a big part of of sex addicts are either very insecure or have been molested themselves.

It's not the fact that you're having alot of sex, but the reason WHY you are really doing it. Of course someone can have alot of sex and not be an addict if you just want to have a good time for a while. Someone else might be doing the same thing (have lots of sex with different partners) but more due to psychological reasons than physical enjoyment.
That being said, I'm very sceptical in using this term too easily for people who have lots of sex. Sex is a natural thing to do and this sounds more like an effort from medical companies in order to push some new medicine they are researching or w/e.

i try to get myself be addicted to learning for university.. thus far i failed
and sex.. why not. people are different and some are more responsive to certain things than others. i don't think that every single person _basically_ has the same sex drive - so naturally there will be some who may need sex only once a week and are content with it and others are like super hooooot all the time steaming with horniness

If sex addiction is real... my ex had it. Got damn that chick was a nympho...
My current GF asks me sometimes for it, but not as much as my ex. That chick had some problems
I dunno about you guys, but I thought it was weird when my ex wanted sex ALL the time.

sex addiction is not real its complete bullshit. I know i don't have sex addiction, I am just horny as fuck, so I just nail my girlfriend three times a day and pass out tired as fuck. It's a fucking biological necessity to reproduce, our genitalia were MADE for that exact purpose, calling it an addiction is one of the most ludicrous things ive heard. Hey might as well come up with something called food addiction, so the pharmaceudical companies can have "scientific backings" to how their diet pills supposedly "cure" an imaginary addiction. Shit like this gets me so steamed

In theory you can get addicted to anything that releases dopamin into your mind. Eating, drinking alcohol, sex etc. as long as you have problems that may make you release less dopamin than a normal person, these things can become an addiction. Masturbation has the same effect, and sometimes doctors even tell patients to masturbate if they are depressed.

I suppose any addiction to something pleasurable can be real. Be it drugs, sex, or sugar... If it makes us feel good, it can become an addiction when we start becoming dependent on them to cope with our lives. In the case of sex addiction, think of it not as some sort of chemical or biological addiction, but a psychological dependence on sex in order to cope with some sort of other unhappiness in your life.

..... /facepalm.
Sorry dude but I think you're thinking about it from a very narrow perspective. Sex addicts almost always do it for psychological reasons, but physical.
