I was going to name the thread "Tiger Woods found in Sex addiction" rehab clinic but I thought it'd be closed or ignored, so I renamed it this way cause here's my question. My dad is very conservative and closed minded and we were talking the other night about this news and he said "bullshit, another XXI century made up dicease".

although harmful and well comning from a close minded person as my dad, it called my attention in this particular case because well, it made sense. I would have to say it all started like 6 years ago when my dad and I were watching this TV show and the show was about "stress the XX century dicease" and my dad was like "more like stress the XX century MADE UP dicease so that psychologists can get more money".

Now I'm majoring in journalism and I know jack shit about psychology and that but like I said, when my dad said that my first reaction was to rollover my eyes. but a few minutes later I was like:

is there really such thing as "sex addiction"?

I mean seriously, who wouldn't want to have a few girls here and there, how many times you walk on the streets or go to a bar and you just see a girl you jsut want to nail and call it a night, especially men of course. with the power and the money that Tiger Woods has, or George Clooney or Derek Jeter (3 guys well known for sleeping with A LOT of women), even Warren Beaty in his heyday. Sure Tiger screwed because he cheated on his wife, but from a manly point of view, what does make him different from George Clooney or Beaty ?

it's not like a drug addictoin, as we all know drugs have an addictive component (heroin, cocaine, etc).... or smoking with nicotine, but seriously "sex addiction" ? I don't know jack about Tiger's personal life, but I think that even him getting laid frequently, and winning all those tournaments and majors at the same time.... I don't think an "addict" would be able to do that, unless that person is extremly talented. let's face it, sex and sport at a competitive level are not precisely the best friends (not that there are enemies either).... but we're talking about sex addiction and one of the best golfers in history.... a sport which most important skill is CONCENTRATION.

how do you CONCENTRATE if you're a SEX ADDICT ? doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

anyway,
I didn't know what to think at the beginning, it's ticking in my head for sure. what do you guys think ?

is there really such thing as "sex addiction"?

kinda long post but just said what I think

The jury is still out on this one, don't form a concrete opinion without personal experiences in the area.

It sounds like you should focus on the similarities and differences of physical vs mental addiction. In addition, you should focus on the myths/truths about mental addiction.

It's not chemically addictive, like nicotine, in that your body will not stop producing the chemicals that sex induces. I certainly wouldn't call it a disease. But I'm sure just like some people are addicted to video games, others are addicted to sex. But just like gaming addiction, it is not one of those addictions that can excuse related behaviors.
There is but one truth.

Playing games as an addiction is also a controversial topic in medical/psychological circles.

With gambling, gaming, sex addiction and so on. It's not really an addiction to the activities, but the good feelings they can produce.

I'm a recovering addict. I saw what was wrong with my life so I dumped that bitch. The temptation is always there to get another hit, and currently I can't see myself holding off too much longer. That feeling of euphoria when the dopamine hits your brain is too good.

A professor friend of mine went through sexual addiction therapy.

It wasn't until he embraced and accepted his sexuality did he actually start improving his life.

When it comes to behavioral "addictions," I think that instead of labeling someone as a deviant, it might be a better idea to question why we as a society feel the need to label them as such. Personally, I love "sex addicts," they're always ready to go when I am.

if you can be addicted to sex, then might as well call life an addiction as well.

It's 100% psychological and/or social, no mental emotions are going on, since people who are afflicted with this disease are pretty shallow (hey look a Tiger just appeared)

For what its worth "physical/mental addiction" are no longer terms that are really used with modern addiction theory. The biological basis for how/why addiction occurs gets more and more blurry as neuroscanning techniques get better. The idea of something being physically dependent (ie when its removed there are serious side effects like with opiates) is somewhat separate from the actual model of what addiction is.

The idea that it is made up is completely true, however that is also true with any and all forms of mental abnormality. What is "mental disease" is completely culturally based, as anything that doesn't fall within normal behavioral standards will be deviant or however you want to look at it. For example ADHD is not diagnosed almost anywhere outside of America, and for many years homosexuality and "frigidity" (when a woman won't put out LOL) were conditions that existed in the DSM.

My thoughts were that putting a foreign chemical into your body might create a physical addiction whereas being addicted to experiential events can't be physical either way. I admit I'm not up on the actual theory.

sex "addiction" is a complete crock of shit. your dad is right.

it's just basic biology, males are programmed to have sex as much as possible to impregnate as many women as possible (it's called life).
