With the influx of "OMG DA YEAR ENDED" threads, I thought it necessary to include one of my own. What did you manage to accomplish for yourself in 2009? What life lesson did you realize last year? It can be real life OR TL/BW related. I think this is a good way to reflect on all of the positive.
For me:
- Got a job that I love with good pay. - Learned I can love again even after loss. - Finally met TLers at my first LAN - Found out rap isn't as bad as I thought it was. - 2000 worthless posts. - More than one way to cross the cliff. - Went from D- Zerg player to D Terran player.
2009 was pretty slow for me. A lot better than 2008 though. What about you?

doing nothing is a good skill toi have.

the fist thing that comes to mind is going from a D+ Z players to a C level P player. but is that really an accomplishment?

It's pretty much the same.
I made good progress in my studies, ran a marathon, founded a band and got a lot better at tf2

Life lesson:
It's so easy to cruise through your first year of university doing no work or studying, but second year will fucking own you.

My list: - Learned a LOT more about girls and life. - Got into a suitable university. - Got to 2k post on TL by doing nothing.
The last 7 years have been kinda sucky, in 2010 I'll start brand new!
edit: 2222th post!

2009 has probably been the most important year of my life so far. I'm 16 and I have a lot to go but I have matured to such a level that I look back and wonder what kind of a little kid i was. This may seem a little hard to believe but I accept the responsibilities that are given to me at this age.
Did accomplish anything?Yes.
-I lost 40 pound by exercising. -I have started running and can do 6 miles. -My grades went up this year and I have good classes this year. -I got myself a gf. ^.^ -I despise my religion. -I'm doing this course after school that will allow me work as a medica assistant next year.
All in all, a great year.

That's awesome man. You know people say this a lot but if I could rewind to when I was 16 I would do shit so differently T_T. I didnt even want to WALK 6 miles when I was that age, rofl

I learned that humanity is too dumb/shortsighted/self centered to save it's own ass (or at least it's current lifestyles etc.). Kopenhagen *rolleyes*.
Btw I wonder why there was no thread (was there?) about Chinas de facto blockade of the whole event. Oh well... :/

I learned most important characteristics about concept, any concept, like ie their motivational ( and not only ) energy spin, the constant about their relations to belief system, non-existance of two totally indepndent concepts, words symbolical-logical relation or lack of to priority concepts and hierarchical structure of concepts, ie there are always priority concepts that create the subsets of thereof. This is related to theorems and theorem-word maths.
This is actually , I believe , one of the most profound and important discoveries for humanity, as it lets the individual to master the differing skill and to deduce truth - or at least deduce the lack of information needed to deduce it, instead of making false assumptions - in any situation , related to anything .
I believe I received help through non-traditional means but anyways .... too bad I cannot publish it and even if I ever will, I most propably won`t do it by my real name . Good to at least post a shell of it here.
AH and :
Almost totally cured myself from OCD , in addition learned what exactly causes it and how to fix it in a rather short time , without lying to oneself as it is required in the exposing-behavioral teraphy, in a way that is not only coherent to oneself`s sense of truth but also helps to learn about it and learn a lot about human instrument with its emotional and belief systems. This is a discovery too, as there was no 'cure' for OCD , more or less just methods which psychology tried to use as equivalents of cure.
Also learned ways to learn school stuff like 2-3 times faster and memorize it all almost perfectly, without even trying too much. Its just ways to learn, anyone can do it.
|
I predict many, many posts with lists that are something like this:
1) Got a totally bomb job 2) Got a totally bomb GF 3) Got totally bomb grades
My predictions aside, in 2009 I...
1) Kept my totally bomb job 2) Kept my totally bomb partner 3) Totally bombed my grades
Happy 2010!

I learned that thinking about getting bunker rushed/storm dropped/vultures in your base is the best way to prolong sex if you are about to orgasm.

I realized that the TL banner at the top has been changed, so the horses have antlers and one has a red nose.
Other than that, can't say much has changed...

2009 was awesome, I transferred into a new school with a 4.0, and maintained a 3.6 at the new one this semester.

Learned that... I can get 800 on quant GRE with less than 1 hour of prep. I suck at verbal even though I studied for months. San Francisco is an awesome city with great people and great food. Statement of Purpose is a bitch to write.
Accomplishments: Made over $30,000 in four months. Met some really cool people and became good friends with them. Received three full-time offers (more interviews to come in the next year) from companies in New York City, San Francisco and Seattle. Went to the gym three times a week for majority of the weeks in 2009 (I'm actually really really really proud of this ) Finally began volunteering at a local high school, something I wanted to do since 2007.

I started working out and cleaned up my diet.
|
Lost 20 lbs. and improved my bass playing to the point that I can jam with/improvise with most jazz and blues bands fairly well. Also got in contact with some old friends and family I haven't talked to in years.
I've managed to fuck up every other aspect of my life though, so I can't really say that this has been a good year =/
Edit: as for stuff I learned. I've finally learned (or trained myself since I already "learned" this technically) not to procrasitinate so much.
|
- Went to Blizzcon and met a lot of new TLers - Finally started school, and did pretty well my first semester, despite only taking three classes.
That's about it. I'm a bit of an underachiever these days.

PS- Congratulations ilistis and noenoe! I'll use you guys as my inspiration this year to lose some fat. That is some crazy shit you guys managed to do .

Outside of academia, I'm pretty sure I didn't learn, or accomplish, anything at all.
|
I learned that just when you think you are about to make it good in life, something happens that can totally change everything, without your control, or sometimes it is in your control, but you never see the bad coming cause you're too focused on what may become good.
I also learned that a lot of things in life are illusions, and won't really make it what you think they will, a lot of evil things in this world, a lot of lies. Most of all I learned that in order to change something, don't look towards other people to change, and don't procrastinate. Work with the system not against it.
edit: and that minds can work in mysterious ways

Finished High School in a sense, got my EMT, got and lost my first real job, hit C- with zerg, generally got my self ready for college
|
|
logged 1000 TDA games
was thrown out of college
|
I learned that I need to set goals as I sort of pissed away 2009.
|
Roughly in chronological order, starting at early 2009.
Carried my useless project group to a decent mark. Dated a girl for a bit but realized engineering ate up too much time for a stable relationship. Got a summer research job with reasonable pay. Joined Teamliquid Bombed the fall semester.
... kinda sucks. Except the TL part.

extremely friendly Latvian people thought me not to smoke at airports.

-Burned off 50 pounds -Got honor roll in school -Made great new friends
Good year.
|
1. TL is like crack for a procrastinator, and makes starcraft seem like just cigs. 2. Gonna be a long time till I get a girlfriend. 3. Gonna like the same girl for a long time still probably, like her all last year and still like her, no reason for it either, I'm like that with crushes :\ 4. Even though I'm average height for my age and pretty damn scrawny my violence gives me a superiority in my group of friends.
To sum it up I learned I'm pathetic, TL ROCKS!!!, and that just because I'm weak doesn't mean I can be taken advantage of, bitch.

Lots of important stuff hapenned to me in 09.
- Broke up with my GF after 3 and 3/4 years
- Started running regulary
- Discovered that I lreally like my school
- Went to my first open air trance festival and also Sensation white (which sucked though)
- Met many wonderful people
- Started poker-community website in the Czech republic

I graduated from college with no ambition or motivation. This is OK because I couldn't find a job even if I tried harder. I had a single interview that went well, so here's hoping for 2010.
I spent a lot of time fucked up at the end of my college days, having suffered a bad breakup towards the end of the previous year. Since recovering from this antisocial and self-destructive behavior I have made no progress with social skills or getting out and doing things.
I moved back in with my parents because I have no job.
I'm no longer playing sports that I did at school, and I don't feel motivated to do much of anything. This means I'm way out of shape now.
Not a particularly solid year.
|
realized my relationship after 3,5 years was just shit and my gf a dumb whore and i was being blind. -> smoked too much weed. -> became a basement dweller. -> dropped out of college. -> fucked up the relationship to my parents. -> stopped smoking weed. -> took care about myself again. -> got into another college. -> slowly getting my shit together and managing to actually study. -> starting to learn how to deal with women again after being full of hate for about half a year. -> started being happy again during the last few weeks of 09.
all in all, prolly the most fucked up year in my whole life. but 2010s gonna be the shit and i know it.

First of all: Thanks OP! I really really like this thread idea, and even though there is the occasional spam, the replies to it have been interesting and heartening! I can't believe I missed it first time around. Anyway:
I accomplished...
* I quit WoW * I got myself perhaps the first long time male friend in 5 years * I fucked up a girl's crush on me * I started highschool * I wrote my first blog, and I really thought it turned out well, even if there were so few people replying to it! * I joined TeamLiquid (Question is if I'll ever get out of these claws again >.> ) * I got a girlfriend (Which I lost again.) * I started working out every second day, and thereby gained 5 kilograms (~ten pounds)
I realised... * A lot, yet nothing about girls * It takes a special person to be able to talk to me 1 on 1.. Fuck my social skills * Quitting an MMORPG does not make you any happier or social. * How to solve a rubik's 3x3x3 cube (Thanks Cube! See you in the BETA) * That friends don't come by every day. Sticking with the good ones are the way to go for me, because there don't come around that many of them.. * What "apathy" means and learned to appreciate that I don't behave like that * a lot about psychology and philosophy on a theoretical level.

2009 was the worst year of my life.

1) Wrote a good number of short stories and poems 2) Got a little better at SC 3) Met a totally awesome girl! ^_^ 4) Decided I want to be a teacher 5) Won my first Magic The Gathering tournament (it was legacy) 6) Invented Gisby, the most awesome game ever.
Could have been a better year, more writing and less SC probably would have helped, but I think I did alright.

There's so much more to life than all the good and positive stuff that happens in it. Haha. You're right about that but I don't think a single person who has replied has really bragged. As I said in the OP i think it's a good way to focus on some of the GOOD stuff that has happened to us. I hope next year you come back and realize you're just being a negative nancy.

Don't know if it was a good year or not

Got job. Met girl. Had to grow up alot in about a month. Decided to get good at BW in October, then got Swine Flu and a shit load of course work, then finally started working at it in late December t.t
Other than that...
Predictions:
Hopefully will get a novel completed, rather than get it to 40k words and decide its crap, regardless of what anyone else says (happened 4 times in 09 )
Will probably get B on iccup if I don't quit the game.
Will continue to cruise through university.

What I've learned...mmmm...
I know it's cliche, but "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do" - I was a dumb ass for not doing anything really for my first 2 years in high school, and now that I'm a senior I sorely regret not taking up any of the wonderful experiences high school has to offer. I've also learned that I shouldn't really be a shy person, since there are so many interesting people in the world to meet and talk with. I've realized that to enjoy life, you sometimes have to go out of your comfort zone and try out new things and meet new people. Hopefully this will serve me well in college come fall...
