Yeah I've never really been to a *nice* restaurant in my life. A lot of TL'ers live in bigger metropolitan areas in the united states / europe / asia where there are plenty of fine dining places. Thats why I was seeing if people with experience with this knew weather a suit might be over the top, etc.

I think I should just call them as meph said earlier.

A suit ,if you have one, is preferable. If not, wear a sports jacket with a nice shirt. Wearing a pair of jeans or a pair of chinos/khakis doesn't really make a difference, since they are both considered a casual pant. If you opt for jeans, go for a pair with a dark wash. Hope this helps.

You can pull off jeans if they are a semi-decent pair, and as long as you include the most important thing: shoes. Guys don't think about shoes that much, but they are hands down the absolute most important part of your attire. Spend the most you can afford on a pair of black leather shoes, and you can get in just about anywhere with a nice pair of jeans, a shirt and a jacket.

Shoes are very important, as stated earlier. I'm not sure if you guys have them in Alaska but Discount Shoe Warehouse (DSW) is awesome for shoes. They have tons of really fashionable shoes (from actual brands like Steve Madden, Clarks, etc.) for good prices. I recently got two pairs of dress loafers--one black, one brown--, a really nice pair of suede hush puppies and a pair of Puma sneakers for like $350 total.

nice shoes, buttondown shirt, and pants which aren't jeans. i'm not a huge fan of khakis but you can wear those if you play it safe.

if you want to go dressy-casual you can always go for a sportscoat over a polo/button down and nice jeans.

If you MUST wear jeans, for heaven's sake let them at least be VERY dark. Nothing says "I don't belong in a fancy restaurant" more than jeans and tennis shoes. (well, aside from things like wifebeaters where you probably won't even get in the door.)

I also don't think you'd be wrong to wear a tie to a nice place like this, and chicks dig a man who can dress up. But if you can't bring yourself to wear one, going without is fine.

FWIW, I wore a suit and tie to a first date at a fancy restaurant and now we're engaged and getting married next June. :D
