Recently, every time I get into a big battle, my ping skyrockets to 200-400. The net_graph shows either the 'localplayer' or 'entities' portion of the graph spiking very high. Any ideas? Google searches are fruitless for me. Thanks!
Bonus points if you can guess where I am in that picture 8D
put this in your autoexec.cfg file in the C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\name\team fortress 2\tf\cfg folder:
rate "30000" // Max bytes/sec the host can receive data. cl_cmdrate "66" // Number of command pakets sent to the server per second. cl_interp "0.0152" // Interpolate x seconds from game (0.02 = 20ms) cl_lagcompensation "1" // Perform server side lag compensation of weapon firing events. cl_updaterate "66" // Number of packets per second you are requesting from the server. cl_smooth "0" // If set to 1 attempts to smooth the view after prediction errors. cl_smoothtime "0.02" // Time over which to smooth the view after prediction errors if cl_smooth is enabled. cl_interp_threadmodeticks "0" // Additional interpolation ticks to use when interpolating with threaded engine mode set. cl_pred_optimize "2" // Optimize for not copying data if didn't receive a network update (1), and also for not repredicting if there were no errors (2) cl_interp_ratio "1" // Sets the interpolation amount (final amount is cl_interp_ratio / cl_updaterate).
may want to change cl_interp to something you're more comfortable with, though. i set hitscan classes at around .03 and projectiles at .0152
Just had my first two pugs, and I now realize that it's better when scouts communicate with each other and win, rather than not and do whatever on their own and lose
Hey, figured this was a good place to post. So myself and 3 friends have recently bought TF2 to play as a fun side game. We'd like to get into the competitive side a little bit more but have no idea where to start.
I was just wondering how the active/alive it is and where to start. Are there scrim channels on irc? How do teams usually communicate? What would you suggest other than watching videos and demos [ which we've kinda done ] what are the current maps played? Some explanation of the maps and the cevo maps [ where we're looking to maybe play ] would be really great and appreciated!
And also as a long shot if there's two people [ 6v6 is the norm right? ] who have some idea how to play and are looking to play for fun with people in cevo then we would be more than glad to learn and play with some experienced people. We've played other games like cs 1.6, source, and dota on a pretty high level so we are not unfamiliar with that aspect.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! I know there are some pretty good players who've posted here or know high-profile players.

I'm not that well-versed in the American scene but I know it is alive, though not nearly as active as the EU scene is. Here's a very good article for anyone trying their legs at TF2: http://www.gotfrag.com/tf2/story/43759/ . It should cover most of your needs, I haven't actually read it myself but yeah...
Teams use Ventrilo (99% of Euros use Mumble though because it's superior sound quality, much lesser delay in sound and the fact that it's free), obviously.
Maps... if you're new to the game I'd only consern myself with badlands and granary at first, and then work your way from there. Those two are by far the best and most played maps in the game, and give a good basis of the game as most other maps are built by the ruleset set by them.
If you want to practice outside scrims, I'd recommend bball or ammomod for soldiers and DM servers for every class (except medic, who needs to basically learn his positioning in publics or pugs). I'm sure someone from the NA can clue you in on the practice mode servers on your side of the pond...
I don't know how it's over there, but here all new players go through a pretty substantial period of getting destroyed when they've just started. due to the game being so different from anything else so prepare for that. Quake/QWTF/TFC experience usually helps, CS not as much. I'd imagine high-level DotA experience helps somewhat, as TF2 is more about team chemistry/teamwork than anything else.
We (Power Gaming, top5 euro team) actually played vs idk? yesterday for EMS on three of the most standard maps in the game. http://resupply.eu/index.php?site=files&file=50 It's a pretty damn close game, too, even though mostly due to both sides making humongous mistakes all the time :D (don't spec our medic on gravelpit... shudder).

Thanks a lot for all the information. Maybe its cuz tf2 is newer or I'm just used to playing older games but seems to me like random people sampling from tf2 populations seem to be nicer. I did read that gotfrag thing and watched some demos already but I will take in all the other stuff.
And thanks again to elemenope was really helpful with everything answering all the little questions. I'll probably be in this thread a lot more!
At least the EU TF2 community is extremely well-mannered in comparison to any other game out there, mostly because of the fact that the scene has mostly grown around older gamers from older games and as a result is a bit older in general, something people tend not to expect due to obvious reasons. Also, in a game like TF2 where teamwork and comms are so important you get ostracized pretty damn quick for being an asshat and noone will recruit you.
Gotfrag forums appear to be an exception to this rule however, probably the worst message board I've ever visited.
