After clicking on the other thread and being sadly dissapointed that they were talking about soccer I've decided to get this thread going. Who is the best (real football) player that you have ever seen?

My picks:

1) Brett Favre: He is just so consistent!
2) Tom Brady: While I live in the Pacific northwest I'm originally from new England so the Pats have a special place in my heart.
3) Seneca Wallace is the 2nd string QB for the Seahawks but they have him player Tight end, wide receiver, running back, he's pretty crazy.

As much as I hate to admit it, Landon Donovan.
Hopefully, Jozy Altidore in the years to come.

Wait, how did I forget the legend - Brian Mcbride.

I always thought that the foot in football (soccer) referred to the foot at the end of your leg and the foot in football (American) referred to the measurement or something like that. But let's not stray off topic here...

"football" in american football supposedly refers to the ball being a foot long

also, you did name the title american football player so i'll refrain from trolling it myself, but as the other thread was trolled and you also used the term "real football" in the post body I certainly wont stop anyone else. :p

ever seen in person? none
ever seen on tv? hmm. I have always thought that ed reed was amazingly good (so does everyone else too but that's beside the point), also brian dawkins amazes me with his consistent play (maybe not this year he's getting old). Sean Taylor had some amazingly athletic plays before his untimely death

I like high quality safety play, they have to be so versatile and also smart

In a recent interview KAKA said Ronaldo & “Messi are the best players in the world”. Deco a teammate of Ronaldo in the Portugal national team said of Messi “There’s no other like Leo. Not even Cristiano Ronaldo”

Surely C. Ronaldo has had a great year, but Ronaldo is 22 years old, but his physical form is the key element of his game, and some fancy footwork, which in many cases never produce anything but a highlight film.
Rooney has some tempermant issues. He is strong, but fails in craftiness and creativity in comparison to the rest, but is still creative in comparison to others (outside of Riquelme - whom I think is the most creative player)

Kaka is now 25 years old, kaka is a speedy player who gets all his production from counter attack. You will never see kaka dictating the game with his creativity unless he is on the counter attack. Kaka isn’t a playmaker.

Ronaldinho is still one of the best. Though most of his goal this season came from PK & free kicks, thats still talent and when he is on his game, no one could out surpass him.

Messi is 19 years old, but yet he is the most dangerous player. Remember Messi was out due to injury for 4 months, yet came back firing. A hat trick at the classico, and wondrous goal last week has made him the face of football. His speed, craftiness, technique & ability to control the ball so close to his feet while running full speed makes him a dangerous player. Messi isn’t a future world best, he is the worlds best.

Not to forget about Zidane, he was wonderful on his Juventus years, he literally WAS Juventus, he's long passes ,technical ability and control with the ball is like no other. Thats why in my opinion he's the best playmaker/midfielder on the world that has ever lived.

Best manager in the world would be Sir Alex Ferguson, theres no one that even comes close to him
Sir Alex Ferguson was a wee 16-year-old lad, ready to make his debut in professional football for Queen’s Park. He has come a long way since then, winning thirteen League titles in England and Scotland, six European trophies, five FA Cups, two League Cups, as well as a further five trophies in Scotland.

Rio Ferdinand isn’t the only one to heap on the praise, we’ve seen a striking U-turn from ABU Oliver Holt, as well as several managers in the Premiership offering up their high opinion of our manager.

“When I was trying to make my way in management in Spain, I wanted to learn as much as possible, so I decided to spend some time in England, to see how things were done over here,” said Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez.

Current Chelsea manager, Luiz Filipe Scolari, reckons Fergie is an inspiration.

“Sir Alex’s contribution for football not only in England, but in the world, is huge,” said Scolari. “He is a man with passion who loves his job, loves football. I want, in my life, to follow this man and his story. Many coaches in the world when they look and read about Alex, they admire him. He is an inspiration and a man who is a mentor for others.”

Ferguson’s new best mate, Arsene Wenger, has also commented on the achievement of our manager.

“Fifty years is an unbelievable achievement and there is a massive passion behind that,” said Wenger. “In his case it is a massive achievement because for most of those years he has been under pressure at the top, top level.”

Martin O’Neil, who some reds fancy to replace Fergie in a couple of seasons, puts our manager up there as one of the greatest ever.

“To manage any club and stay there for such a long period of time is remarkable,” he said. “To do that at Manchester United where the expectations and the ability to come up to those expectations is constantly questioned is, quite simply, phenomenal. He is one of the best managers of all-time. Unquestionably.”

Also R.I.P to Thomas Kressner from goal.tv staff, he was the best executive producer in the world that i had ever seen or wish to had seen hypothetically speaking, he really boosted goal tv general audience and stablished it as one of the best football channels, not only in America but in the world.

Hmmm according to european logic we should call american football "handball with the occasional foot" while according to american logic we should call soccer "27 to 28 inch ball".

I think it's obvious that European logic is superior here.

Also, Zidane, obviously.

Dude, I live in Olympia, and while I'm a die-hard Seahawks fan, the mere fact that you have Seneca up there baffles me. Don't get me wrong, I love Seneca. He wears the same jersey number as I do. But he's not even top 25% as far as NFL talent goes. Also, he's never played tight end or running back. He has played wide receiver and has returned kicks though. Asking who's best can be tough though. Trying to compare across eras is always going to be difficult.

That said, I'd say Dan Marino is probably my pick for best QB and Barry Sanders for RB. Defense is also hard to quantify, so I'll base my picks based on the only thing I care about: Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES! As such, the defenders are tied in my opinion. Really, it's Rod Woodson at corner, and Dave Fulcher playing Safety. Notable mention goes to Mike Singletary. When in doubt, always consult the best (American) football game ever!

brain mcbride -> dempsey then... I dunno, are there more players?
Friedel, but then he is a GK. Easily the best though.

edit: I thought of more!! but they are surely not good enough to be on the list, never seen donovan play so I can't comment.
Also, there are probably more kicks using a foot in rugby than american football

I think its stupid how the rest of the world calls it football, what the hell is wrong with soccer?

but then again I don't give a shit about soccer, so call it whatever you want, it still sucks.

Lets change basketball to hand ball because you obviously use your hands to play the game and not feet. Who cares if there is already some other kid's game called handball ours is better. And besides there really is no 'basket' in the game its a net.

..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

Clearly, the only way to resolve this is to have "football" refer to Australian Rules Football. Or Cuju, since that came before either.

Favre certainly isn't consistant. There's a reason the dude leads the league in INT for career. He's damn good, but it's basically because he doesn't give a fuck and will find a way to get you the ball.

For me, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice or Barry Sanders, mostly just cuz he did it with absolutely no one around him

LOL All the people that bitched about their football thread getting trolled are doing the exact same thing... nice.

Anyway its hard to pick the best because there are so many positions but I have to say:

Marshal Faulk - THe man was born covered in butter, nobody can tough him

John Elway - Spent his whole career with the same team.Five superbowls, two wins and one of the losses was up against Joe fucking Montana.

Steve Young - Nuff said.

To be fair the Americans came into that thread made a slight joke and agreed that both were cool sports, it was a joke. In the soccer thread and this one the Euros are just trashing on our sport like theres no tomorrow. At least we didnt come in and call something that is a staple of entertainment in your country shit. I guess I shouldnt really be talking though since I set off the whole troll in the other thread. Sorry

Ok then lets rename soccer to "football with the occasional catchball also sometimes hit with head, stomach, knee chest or pretty much any other part your body than your hand, also can be picked up sometimes) I think football is a jackass name for any sport but honestly which sport doesnt have a shitty name? Sports names arent meant to be descriptive of the way they are played. Did you know that rugby is originally a form of your football (soccer)? Well man rugby is played mostly with your hands and the occasional kick and for a long time people still called it football. Wow guess that makes you guys pretty dumb too...

Basketball = Played with a basket when it first was invented, a fucking basket has no place in a modern basketball game.

Baseball = The fucking bases obviously. Clearly not meant to describe the sport at all but one small facet of it.

Hockey = I have no fucking idea.

I would try to name a good European sport but all you guys have right now is soccer. Burn. its shitty to have your favorite sport trashed on for no reason huh?

Also, Ronaldo, obviously :D

gotta say as much as i respect Brett Farve i think it's a bit to much to say he was the best ever....

hell he's not even the best of his era(s).

of course you have to qualify what you mean by "best", and if by "best" you really mean to say: "the most entertaining player to watch" then Brett might indeed have a legitimate claim to the throne. But he was always a player that, while having serious flaws, seemed to rise above them with sheer determination. Not that he was the best at his position. think about it, would at any time in his career would you have picked him over Tom Brady? yeah, thought not.

Speaking of Brady he probably would be the run away favorite if he could have just won one more game last year, but alas fate is a cruel mistress.

This is not true at all.

Football is called football because that's what it is and has always been. History lesson follows!

Back in the day (early 1800s) football was the name used for a sport with a range of playing styles. It was used for both kicking only, or carrying and grabbing/tackling. This was a bit confusing of course, so In 1863 a group of teams met, called themselves the Football Association and drafted a comprehensive set of rules to prevent the disputes that using disparate styles produced.

The no carrying, kicking only game they eventually settled on was known as Association Football (shortened to Soccer) to differentiate it from the other kind of football which continued to be played and came to be known as Rugby football (after the school where that carrying style was popularized, around 1823). But even Association Football had carrying. The original rules as drafted in 1863 contained these:

"IX. A player shall be entitled to run with the ball towards his adversaries' goal if he makes a fair catch, or catches the ball on the first bound but in the case of a fair catch, if he makes his mark he shall not run.
X. If any player shall run with the ball towards his adversaries' goal, any player on the opposite side shall be at liberty to charge, hold, trip or hack him, or to wrest the ball from him, but no player shall be held and hacked at the same time.
"

Those rules were dropped from Association Football, but the fact they were there at first shows there was a lot of holding and running with the ball in football, even if one particular group (the Association) eventually moved away from it in creating the current Soccer Football.

So understand this: both variations were known as "Football." In England, Association Football became dominant and took over the Football moniker while the other variation ended up having "football" dropped from the name and being simply Rugby.

In other countries like Australia, Canada and America, the opposite happened. The carrying version was dominant, and took over the Football moniker, while the kicking kind (Association Football) ended up having "football" dropped from the name and being simply Soccer.

So I get sick of hearing that basically every major English speaking country but the UK picked the wrong version of Football to keep calling Football while giving the other one a different moniker to distinguish it. Brits call the carrying kind Rugby (as in Rugby Football) and the US/Canada/Australia call the kicking kind Soccer (as in Association Football).

Now if in whatever non English language someone happens to speak the word for soccer is literally "Foot" - "Ball" (as in German: Fußball), great, good for you. But the word has a history in English and when you mock or rail against large parts of the English speaking world without being aware of it you look like a twit.

Maybe you'd like to go back in time and explain to everyone playing the carry version of football that what they were doing wouldn't really be considered football by people in non English speaking countries of the 21st century and they really shouldn't have called it that. But they did, and that mixed up sport's now differentiated descendents are divided between being called Soccer/Football or Football/Rugby depending on which version won out in a particular country.

*****

TL;DR - People from England who hate the word "soccer": you coined it, not us. Other language speakers: the word "football" has a history in English you obviously aren't aware of (learn it before complaining) or prefer to ignore (in which case meh to you).

Read my post right above yours pls

EDIT: thank you

This would be ideal LOL

Obviously which version won in a given country isn't a once-and-for-all thing. Especially due too the influence of the rest of the world, I wouldn't be surprised if the kicking kind comes back and wins out in Australia, Canada or even the US someday and takes over the name Football there as well. But the point is, we have a reason and a history behind calling our sport Football. In the future if we no longer call it that, we will still be able to say we had a reason to call it Football, because it was and is Football, just a different kind that fell out of favor (though it hasn't here yet, nor has it in many other English speaking areas).

God why do you people take anything Spiral Architect says to heart. I mean SERIOUSLY YOU GUYS; everyone knows that Captain America is dead!

The second-best football player that I grew up with was Steve Young. Seriously, his '94 season was AMAZING, but seriously the best football player I grew up watching? Barry Sanders no doubt. HE and HE ALONE was the reason the Lions were somewhat decent throughout the 90s

he's so good i could watch him even with Lil' John playing in the background

It's easy to make fun of American "RARELY GETS TOUCHED BY THE" foot ball, because the sport IS a joke.

How can you have the "best" American football player.

Every role in the team is like another different game.
It's not really a team sport more a business venture with different departments specialising in a range of unique things. The "Defense" department specialising in outgoing finances for example.

Then you need 500 pounds worth of padding just to start. Then it's only played by a very very select group of individuals who are streamlined from a young age to be football players and nothing else.

Every tried playing a game of American football in your back yard? I bet that's a joke.

The reason real football is the most popular sport in the world is because it's so awesomely simple to play yet so incredibly hard to master. It's the energetic equivalent of starcraft.

All you need is a ball and a few friends and you can have a great time for hours and hours, in fact there is hardly anything I would rather do than play football. I could play it for days.

Americans have done a brilliant job of making a national sport that is only fun to watch on TV, it's the end product of years of ridiculous over ruling and American's special brand of capatalism.
The people that win are the businessman that own the clubs and the TV stations.
Whilst your average fan at the game gets to see 10 minutes of decent action spread over an entire day, which is then further ruined by ridiculous refereeing.

There was a guy I knew who was completely backward fucking in love with American Football. And whenever I would jokingly make fun of it being called football, he would get very angry and explode into a tirade about why it was named football.

He claimed that it was named football because it was played on foot, as opposed to horse (aka Polo) which was supposedly big around the time of the sports invention. I always thought it was weird though, it's not like Polo was called Horseball or anything...

I never understood the US "soccer is boring" stereotype.

They watch BORING ASS BASEBALL. It makes no sense. :S

By the way American Football is a good sport. Much better than it's Rugby counterpart.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to add it to the Olympics.

lol don't get me wrong, American Football may be great, but there is NO use in adding it to the Olympics, simply because there is only one country in which it is played.
it would be one more instant gold medall for the US

I am from austria, and it's supposed to be big here, austrian teams won 4 out of the last 8 EFAF-Cups....but lol it has no publicity (nearly no tv time, nearly no articles in the newspapers)
nobody cares about it, I mean really nobody is interested in it

and I don't think rugby is boring,
the WC 2007 was really awesome (nearly as awesome as the real football WC)

WTF

That would be a technical KO in boxing or something. But here they don't even check if he's ok and the coach tells him to stand in front again with the hands in front of his face? Does he want that guy to die or something?

He can't even stand up straight.

Doesn't he know how fucking dangerous that is? If you get two heavy knocks to the head and then suffer brain damage and die in his sleep. Not the first time that would happen.

Over here they have made special instructions in the case two players hit their heads against each other or if they are hit by the ball against the head. If he sees double or feels dizzy, forced sub to protect his brain. Yeah, you always see people play on at the pro level and suffer concussions and be out for a while. Like that goalkeeper from AZ. He was out for like 14 months and then still suffered from that blow to the head.

Not to mention it's a yellow card to stand in front and a red card to throw the ball in someone's face.

I can see the yellow for obstructing, but why would it be a red for throwing it at him? You can't prove that was malicious--he clearly can launch the ball lol. Even if it was malicious, it's just the same as ripping your first freekick at the wall as hard as you can to scare them into moving the next time.

Yeah, it certainly is harder to define a "best" player with multiple positions; that's why they generally make pro-bowl teams and All-American teams for this instead of best player. However, you should not really be surprised when a running back or quarter back wins it for this type of award which is why the question is being raised.

Then you need 500 pounds worth of padding just to start. Then it's only played by a very very select group of individuals who are streamlined from a young age to be football players and nothing else.

What the fuck? Are you serious. I can play with no pads with my friends in my back yard if I truly wanted to. You don't need to be a member of some special elite "football playing" caste in order to be capable of playing the game. And nice over extension on the hyperbole, as I'm sure you'd like to play high-level competitive American football without pads (you realize how many fucking injuries happen with them anyway). Oh, and I'm sure you need to be a "streamlined from a young age" football player to be good at the highest-level of football as well.

Every tried playing a game of American football in your back yard? I bet that's a joke.

Not really. I used to do it a lot with my friends. It's not that fucking difficult.

The reason real football is the most popular sport in the world is because it's so awesomely simple to play yet so incredibly hard to master. It's the energetic equivalent of starcraft.

American football isn't that much horrifically different. It's easy to lob a ball to one of your buddy receivers. It's much more difficult being capable of reading zone coverages, dissecting a defense while a 300 pound mammoth is running a 4.7 40-yard dash speed ready to pound your ass into the ground.

All you need is a ball and a few friends and you can have a great time for hours and hours, in fact there is hardly anything I would rather do than play football. I could play it for days.

As could I with American football.

Americans have done a brilliant job of making a national sport that is only fun to watch on TV, it's the end product of years of ridiculous over ruling and American's special brand of capatalism.
The people that win are the businessman that own the clubs and the TV stations.

What the fuck? I'm not even going to respond to the first half of this paragraph since it's so overwhelming with stupidity. Your second half is completely flawed as well, due to the fact that there generally is enough action that the ten minutes more than make up for it (and let's not forget that football also has its massive downtimes [especially when players flop...]) and there can be some pretty ludicrous refereeing in football as well.

If you want to continue to argue semantics, you will not receive any more word from me because this isn't the topic of discussion of this thread. If you really want to make a discussion over the "OMG MAI SP0RT R BETUH THAN URS!" conversation that you're attempting to hold here, make a new thread for it and watch it be closed near-instantly since no good argument will ever come from it. Until you do that, get the fuck out of the thread or list the best American football player you've ever seen. And judging by your lack of understanding of the sport, I guess that would be a question you would be incapable of answering.

Anyways, to the OP:

Barry Sanders is definitely a sexy pick with his special pizazz. But Seneca Wallace, really?

Oh, lol at the guy who wrote a massive reply to my post with numerous expletives.

If I was to answer the very subjective original question, I'm going to have to say Adrian Peterson. You might say it's a lame/obvious choice but he just seems to be so incredibly talented.

Obviously the best way to decide this is Tecmo Bowl performance. Along those lines, the answer is either Bo Jackson or Lawrence Taylor.

And an OT word to people who talk about pads being a sign of wussiness: do you say that to hockey players? Besides, I can't even watch football anymore. There's a nasty season ending injury almost every game. Shit makes me sick (knee injuries are a super phobia of mine). Obviously the pads aren't really needed at all and it's a bunch of powderpuffs wearing them

I still play Tecmo Bowl today. Often. Super Tecmo Bowl, of course. Bo knows, and I do too.

Joe to Jerry is deadly. Fucking deadly.

Now if we're talking Tecmo Bowl, Gmen are ridiculous. You simply can't kick fg/xp vs the Giants cuz of LT.

It's impossible to compare across positions, but I ctrl-f'd Walter Peyton, Jerry Rice and Barry Sanders and it looks like everything is under control.

Thank you hasuprotoss !

I'm more familiar with Canadian Football, but one player I really liked when I was younger was Emmitt Smith from the Cowboys!

ITS FREAKING L.T!!! Screw montana to rice. L.T could rush joe and if he was LUCKY enough to get the pass off before L.T planted his ass in the dirt. L.T was still fast enough to run backward and pick the pass off. Now thats GODLY!

Would have to do per position since overall is tough but eh.. especially when there's offense and defense, totally different

Overall I guess I'd say, for College
Offense- Tommie Frazier
Defense- Grant Wistrom

NFL-
Offense- hmm, Walter Payton
Defense- Lawrence Taylor with Dick Butkus a close 2nd (im sure many wouldn't agree, but I just like him)
