The officiating in the Colts v Chargers game was the worst post-season officiating that I have seen since the 2005 Super Bowl (Seahawks v Steelers). The face mask penalty should have never been called, it shouldn't have even been considered. It did not, in any way, shape, or form affect the play. Sproles got stuffed for a two yard loss regardless of whether or not that hand touched the face mask. I realize that it was technically the correct call, but it should not have been made in that situation. There is a penalty to be called on every play, but they don't call them all, because that would be ridiculous. The holding call against the corner (or PA, whatever it was) that was guarding Chris Chambers should not have been called. The ball was horribly thrown to begin with, and he probably wouldn't have made the catch anyway. Again, technically it was correct, but it should not have been made. Referees should not have that kind of impact on the outcome of a game, and they had a massive one on this game. They penalties were insignificant if they had not been made (no one would have complained about them not being made, is what I'm saying), but these guys had to atone for Ed Hocculi or something, so the screwed the Colts over. If that is a first quarter play, it's fine to call, but at that point in the game they should not be calling penalties that have those kinds of implications (giving a first down after a third down play, and a first down after a negative play). When penalties against one team are two to one there is bias in the officiating. Under no circumstances should penalties be that lopsided on one team, because, as stated previously, there is a penalty on almost every play in football. I saw at least three holding calls that were not made against the Chargers.
I've said before that I think they can eliminate referees entirely with modern technology. They just get in the way. There is no need for line judges, and with the camera angles available today, it's easier to see things on TV screens than it is on the field. Why leave a game up to the chance of a human error when you can almost entirely eliminate the problem by eliminating the referees?

SL, thoughts~!?
I think I said it last year, and possibly the year before in one of these threads that I thought Shannahan needed to go. They replaced the OC, they replaced the DC like ten times; the only constant was Shannahan, and he was clearly not getting the job done. I've complained consistently about his poor defensive acquisitions over the past two or three years. He was trying to do too much, and really, he was going far beyond what he was really good at: coaching. I was surprised when it happened, and somewhat sad (because he's been there for so long), but I think it was, without a doubt, the right move to make.
I want Spagnuolo as a head coach in Denver next year. They need to do whatever it takes to get that guy.

I'm hoping we get steve spag from the giants.... we need a defensive mastermind.... . but Mike will get another job with another team... hes too good of a coach.
It was far from an amazing job. And had he gone after a real HB in the first place there probably would not have been a problem, but he had this madness about him that he was going to resurrect everyone's broken careers in Denver.
And in that 14-2 season they had a pretty good defense. They were no '85 Bears, but they weren't bad.
It was time. As a fan I am very grateful for what he has done for the organization, and I know that Pat Bowlen, and everyone involved in that organization is grateful for what he has done, but it was time to let go of the past and focus on the present and the future, and when you did that, it was clear that Shannahan needed to go. He'll get a job somewhere, and he'll probably do a great job there too.
I just read that they're going to talk to Jason Garrett as a possible HC too. I will be so pissed off if Jason Garrett is the next HC of the Broncos. I wouldn't mind the guy from New England, or even their current OC moving up. And, like I said, I would love Spagnuolo in Denver.

BAL > MIA PHL > MIN
How people can pick Miami over Baltimore confounds me. To me, it's one of the easiest pick in wildcard.
as I say this, ED REED.

Seriously... MIA is outclassed here. Ravens defense is top notch and have already pressured Pennington into two interceptions in this first half.
PHL and MIN will be a closer game. MIN good defense and good running back, but very questionable QB. PHL is more well balanced.

LOL can't believe it??? they've done it many times before. Colts = EZ

Yeah Baltimore D! Way to get me 20 points in Gridiron Challenge! Now if David Akers gets like 20 points to make up for Dallas Clark sucking, I'll be in the top 100 or so.
Edit: Actually, probably top 10 or so. I have 111 points. :> Make that 116... Ravens D went up to 25 points. O_o

Go Baltimore! D ||-||-||-||-||! The Titans will really put them to the test next week though. Hoping they will meet the game Steelers in the AFC finals for some sweet revenge.

SweetLemon,
I have to disagree with you here. With the facemask penalty, I would say 99% of the time there is an obvious facemask, it is called by the refs. You can't use some holding non-calls you saw to justify a facemask noncall, because facemask penalties are pretty much cut and dry (either hand on facemask or not) whereas there is more grey area to holding penalties.
As with the holding call against the corner, that was much more than a hold, and the colts are lucky they didnt get called for pass interference. Again, in such obvious cases, these penalties must be called.
The colts defense imploded down the stretch and made huge mistakes that cost them the football game. And considering the colts got outplayed pretty much all game, please do not blame the refs for this one.
|
Well, I've seen games officiated worse than this, so I guess it doesn't really matter. Bottom line, the Colts had many chances to win this thing and couldn't get it done. Better luck next time.

LOL Titans suck ass, Most fluke team ever this year. They'll be lucky if they even get one TD against the Ravens.

I think it will be a pretty close game (single digits or low teen scores), but I hope you are right.

Perhaps some pent up resentment against the Chargers for knocking the Broncos out? God knows the Broncos would've been steamrolled by the NFL's MVP. ;]

Bal couldn't have played it better on Sunday. I wanted the Dolphins to win because I'm a Miami native. Damn, that was terrible. My mom was watching the game and saying there was no way that the Dolphins could come back, and I kept trying to tell her the Dolphins could come back. Yaa.... GG, JudgeMathis. :/

Baltimore could've played a lot better. Flacco was just horrrrrrrible.
|
Baltimore could make it all the way to the Super Bowl if their offense steps it up in big time situations.

I didn't say it wasn't face masking, I said it didn't have any effect on the play, which it didn't. It, therefore, should not have been called at that point in the game. Penalties should not have that sort of impact on the outcome of the game. To whoever said I'm using the holding non-calls to justify that not being called: learn how to read. I said that it shouldn't have been called at that point in the game, because it had no effect on the outcome of that play. He had two guys taking him down two yards behind the line. He had no chance of going anywhere on that play, regardless of whether or not the face mask was touched, but the refs turned it into a 15 yard positive. That should not happen.
And my point still stands that the officiating was biased, because there should never be 2-1 penalties against one team. It doesn't happen.
And just to dispel the idea that it was because I'm bitter: my friend who hates the Colts agreed with what I'm saying.

Yeah, they were definitely a fluke this year. They didn't make Pittsburgh look mediocre in the most important regular season game of the year. They didn't make Indy look bad in the first game (they didn't play their starters in the second for very long, if at all), and they didn't beat the Ravens earlier in the season, either. Oh, they also lost to Minnesota. No, wait, they beat Minnesota, and they did do that to all of those other teams. That's four playoff teams, and two of them were teams that people are STILL claiming are better than the Ravens.

The offense won't do that. The only way they will go to the Super Bowl is if the defense plays the same way it did on Sunday.
