Blacksmith is a good mid hero actually. He has extreme burst damage, very strong vs low hp heroes. Probably not viable in competitive play but he's a strong pubber. TB is stronger though, damn I hate TB.

spellshards are usually a waste of gold on blacksmith - the main reason to buy the item is the ignoring of magic armor, and above level 1 spellshards just allow you to stun before your hammer hits without losing damage. your flaming hammer damage also increases by about 10%/lvl, but thats hardly reason to buy an item for 2575 gold.
the only scenario where it is worth buying is if you have all others items you need to survive/gank with the hero and the enemy team has +magic armor via skills or items. and even then you usually would rather have a disable item like stormspirit or sheepstick.

just dont buy it unless you know you need it, and i can almost guarantee you that wont happen.

Blacksmith has real issues with mana, that's true. That's why I'm going chalice first, then sspirit and switch chalice for null if cash allows (getting ss and orb provides decent manapool and regen for him already). And his attack animation is ok, I find no problem with him denying/lasthitting, with hatchet he's pretty damn good at it.
Also, I find his bloodlust to be pretty uber, although ult should make it always multicast. Hasting your carrys with it is god damn awesome.

@glull: I know that shards won't help bs much (they should make sotm work with him like with ogre in dota, 2k dmg from fireball was sweet) but if your team is spellcaster heavy it could be a nice addition, spreading aoe -magic armor with your dot.

the problem with his animation is that the damage point, sound and animation dont feel natural - he swings as if he would fall over, the sound comes after the animation "touches" the target and sounds like hitting a nail, the damage is dealt when he is already pulling back his arm. thats how it feels for me, at least. i dont have trouble lasthitting with him, but it is annoying and i see why it could be hard. i have that problem with forsaken sometimes.

as to the mana issues... never really had trouble there, you just have to be careful with overkill. many people always mindlessly spam both skills where one nuke would have done the job nicely.
i also usually play blacksmith with bottle and chalice - you dont want to be dependant on items for 2500+ gold to sustain casting your spells on a ganker.

note that spellshards ignoring magic armor is not an aura and not a buff, it is a passive effect. there is no benefit for your teammates.

Oh, I thought it applies a debuff to everything hit with your spells (kinda like frostwolf with regular attacks). In this case I see no reason to be getting them either.
