If you dig Slay the Spire, you should look into the board game. We just got it for Christmas and it's a fantastic co-op adaptation of the video game. It plays just like the video game, but you can have up to 4 players, each playing a different character.

Slay the Spire was an excellent and addicting video game!

Is this the board game version that you're referring to?

It looks like it's on sale for $115 on Amazon; normal price is $125. Pretty steep for a board/party game!

That's the one. It's expensive for a board game, but it's not unreasonable for what you're buying; it's quite component heavy, especially in having 376 cards with sleeves (necessary because the cards are two-sided to support upgrading them by flipping them over). It has a ton of replay value, too, as it has 17 difficulty levels and a large number of unlocks that you earn with each playthrough. I'm sure we'll do at least ten runs as a family, and I figure with extra time for Act IV and reduced time for runs where we fail early, a run will average about 5 hours of play time*. That's 50 hours of family entertainment for 120€, cheaper than taking the whole crew out for McDonald's and a movie.

* The total run time is really long, but the game is designed to allow for a run to be broken into roughly 90-minute sessions by allowing for the game state to be "saved" after each Act by putting each character's deck and other components in a bag that is reserved for that purpose.

To return to discussing the Switch: I'm finally getting some time to devote to Silksong during the long break "between the years" (a German idiom that I just love), and I just can't get over how good it is. The artistry of creating a game world like that, and the love and attention to every little detail, is just mind blowing. There are a thousand tiny little decisions, as simple as the way Hornet takes a couple of steps backwards before turning when you change the direction you're walking, that give the game so much life and such a compelling atmosphere. I read an interview with a game designer once who said that the secret to making a great game was to understand everything in a big game as a smaller game, and to make sure that each of those little games is fun. Silksong just nails that; just walking around and jumping up onto platforms and hitting enemies with basic attacks is incredibly satisfying and fun. What a brilliant video game!

I think you make a really good point when you explain the cost in terms of how many hours of playtime/fun/experience you're getting at that price point. Sounds like a good investment!

I haven't bought/played Silksong yet, but it's currently on sale for $16 instead of its usual $20. And the original Hollow Knight is on sale for half-price ($7.50 instead of $15), so if anyone's interested in scooping up HK and its sequel, now might be a good time to do so!

How much better is it than Shovel Knight or Ori and the Blind Forest though?
Ori was boring to me, but I loved Shovel Knight. I also loved Katana Zero (and Mark of the Ninja).

Katana Zero and Mark of the Ninja are also on sale and cheap atm! Edit: And Ori as well!

I feel like Hollow Knight will be just another platformer to me having played those great ones already, so I still haven't felt compelled to buy it. I guess it's a bit of a BW vs SC2/WC3 or LoL vs Dota2/HotS or D2 vs D3/PoE etc debate.

I enjoyed both Ori games far more than Hollow Knight, but I think a lot of these similar games are going to be subjective in terms of ranking enjoyment / your mileage may vary. I think Ori and Hollow are very close in terms of their metroidvania genre (backtracking / exploration / platformer), and a little closer than Shovel or Katana or Mark is to either of them.

It's awesome just how many solid games are on sale right now

Both Ori games are highly recommendable and i wish they would make a 3rd one. The graphics still hold up to this day, the mechanics are sublime and the music draws you in. I completed both a couple years ago and now i have started over again simply because they are jsut so much fun and works seamless with a controller. Go get the Ori games if you haven't

I 100% agree. A few days ago, I bought Octopath Traveller and Octopath Traveller 2. Today, I picked up both Ori and the Blind Forest & Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Also, I bought the Portal collection, which includes Portal 1 & 2.

I thought about buying Shovel Knight, but I've seen that go on sale multiple times. My daughter is currently playing through Octopath Traveller. She enjoyed Harvestella, and so far, she is really liking Octopath Traveller. I also plan to play OT and OT2, and will probably pick up Octopath 0 at some point in the future. The Ori games are for her because she really likes similar games like Hollow Knight & Silksong, and Nin Sols. I think she will also find both Portal games to be challenging and fun. I plan on trying to finish Portal 1&2 because I never got the time to play them before.

I also bought that pinball Metrovania-like game and I played a bit of it, and it was hard lol.

Re : Ori / Hollow Knight / Shovel Knight :

I haven't played Shovel Knight, but I have played Ori(s) and HK / silksong. The big flavour difference imo is that Ori leans toward an exploratory fantasy wonder, where HK leans much more into a 'dark soulsy' experience. Ori felt wonderful and chill and exploratory, HK felt a lot more willing to skillcheck you with combat in places.

Portal 2 will be interesting on switch. Because iirc, there are certain puzzles that require the movement and dexterity of a mouse and keyboard.

I haven't played Portal 2, but it came out for the Nintendo Switch back in 2022 (same time as Portal 1). It's also available on non-Nintendo consoles (not just PC), so I'm sure the developers found a way to make it user-friendly for all gamers!

The Switch 2's joycons also have mouse capabilities, if you're truly worried about using a traditional controller

A substantial part of the video game industry's success is the $50 Atari 2600, the $70 NES, the $99 SNES and Gamecube, and the $200 Wii. Nintendo has tried to abandon this lower level market segment, but they can not do so despite their best efforts.

Instead of paying $400 for a Switch2 people are paying $250 for a 3DS XL. LOL. I still have mine.

I strongly recommend you consider putting your prices the actual, correct prices into an inflation calculator.

Google / Wiki / Inflation Calculators:

The Atari 2600 launched for $190 in 1977. That's over a thousand dollars in 2025/2026:
"$190 in 1977 is worth $1,016.22 today" https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1977?amount=190

"Release date
NA: September 1977
EU: 1978
FRA: 1982
BR: September 1983
JP: October 1983 (Atari 2800)
Lifespan 1977–1992
Introductory price US$189.95"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_2600

The NES's launch price was around $179-$199 in 1983 (Japan), 1985 (North America), and 1986-1987 (Europe).

The SNES and GameCube were both around $200, not $100.

The Wii was around $250, not $200.

We'd need to compare launch/release prices - because the Switch 2 just launched/released - not the absolute lowest sale available across several years or at the tail end of a console's generation.

Also, do you have any evidence to back up your claim that people are choosing to buy a 3DS XL instead of buying a Switch 2? Couldn't it be the case that people are simply also buying a 3DS XL? (I bought a 3DS XL after I bought a Switch... but it definitely wasn't instead of a Switch.)

He does. Just ignore it. He's not interested in discussing the Switch or Switch games, he's just got a chip on his shoulder and a relaxed relationship with reality. It's been going on long enough that we should know better than to engage with it; it just derails the thread into pointless arguments.

So: Has anyone played through Portal 2 on Switch? My daughter and I played the original together (well, I watched and laughed at the jokes) and it was totally fine, but I definitely remember the puzzles from the sequel that emnjay808 is thinking of that might be a bit tough with a controller.

Got 2 256GB SD Cards for my Switch 2 for Christmas so I got some return credits to a store I had to burn.

Picked up Donkey Kong Bananza and have played about an hour or so, looks promising given my love for Odyssey on the OG Switch.

Other than that I now mostly play with my sons (4 & 6) and we play Mario Kart (Both 8 and World), Super Mario Strikers, Smash Bros, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics.

If anyone have recommendations for fun and simple sports games that are good with kids, let me know. I have Super Blood Hockey which is ok, and I am considering NBA Bounce as well.
