30 hours into Pokémon Sword and loving it. The wild area is superb, I hope each new game has one.
One of the only things I mind is that the GTS is gone, now I have to use a pokemon trading reddit to complete my dex, oh well. Not enough legendaries in the games too. Otherwise no complaints really. Game looks beautiful on Switch (with the exception of that 1 tree in the wild area) and the music this gen is 10/10
Game is doing great btw, look at sales numbers.

Im about 15hrs in and at Leon. What surprises me is the lack of "dungeons" or the feel of lack of dungeons.
I havent played since Gold/Silver so I was wondering if this was normal? It feels as if theres not much to do other than going straight to the gyms.

I am collecting pokemons like crazy. 130 pokemons before gym 4

The problem with Pokemon isn't a lack of innovation, it's the repeated insistence by Game Freak to leave every half-baked idea with potential in it's home gen rather than refining and developing those ideas into something great. The summed list of new features over the course of 8 generations is actually fairly extensive, it's just that the vast majority of them aren't in the newest generation because Game Freak has this infuriating tendency to start from scratch rather than actually refining the mechanics they have in each entry.

I think there's an interview where somebody from GF said they do it intentionally to make each game feel special, or something like that.
As for my own experience, I'm enjoying it, but I know its a bad pokemon game and a bad game in general. The fact I effectively paid $38 for it new also heavily affects that judgement. If I paid 60, I'd be upset.

40 hours in and my dex is almost complete. I just need to catch a Turtonator. Tried catching him for 1 hour yesterday, but no luck. He apparently has a 2% encounter rate. I encountered 5+ Jangmo-os and 5+ Stonjourners who must have similar encounter rates whilst trying to find this 1 Turtonator xD On top of that he knows Explosion, so I'm thinking of using my Master ball here.
Then I just have to do all the trades..

I never quite understood why they never iterated upon Dive, that was a great concept from Ruby/Sapphire.
I think my biggest problems are that there is a severe lack of overworld interactions (no strength pushing around, not cut etc) and I can't ride my pokemon and instead have to ride the ugliest bike wearing the uglliest outfit ever
I know, petty.
i'm enjoying it though.

I think Dive made navigation a little tougher than they'd like for their target audience. I'd be glad to see it back and expanded upon though, it has the potential to be the kind of feature I like on Pokemon over more ways to mangle Gen 1 Pokemon (COUGH FUCKING CHARIZARD COUGH) into weird new forms.
I hope to see a Gen 4 remake in the vein of ORAS, I recently replayed through it to get a Kyogre with a good nature, and remembered how much they crammed into that game with the insane number of legendaries and stuff accessible post game.
Given how much they're willing to cut from SWSH though I can't say I have my hopes up.

because oras is a good remake plus it just added new stuff that was good, enjoyed it through and through while HGSS was a straight up port, nothing wrong with it since it was just that damn good in the first place.

That's quite a hot take, and not a particularly good one.

Anyone have any recommendations of any kid-friendly (mine is approaching 7) that are relatively cheap?
He doesn’t live with me, but I have a Switch and partly got that for us to play together which is good fun, he’s getting pretty decent at MarioKart especially! Gaming and anything technology causes his mum’s eyes to glaze over so I’ve been tasked sorting this.
I’m not a wealthy man though and can’t afford to buy a whole bunch of the AAA Nintendo games though, so was looking to supplement with some good cheaper ones.
Any recommendations?
Browsing Nintendo’s stuff it’s my understanding I can link my Nintendo account to another console and that console can play my games as long as there’s an internet connection?
Not 100% sure really if this is the case though. Would definitely help ease the library issue as we try to limit his gaming and have him do other activities.

Minecraft would be one of the obvious goto choices if they're not already getting that through mobile, especially since it has split screen co-op or crossplay.

I enjoy Mario Party, albeit I think it could do with at least 2 more boards that it has/will never get. Depending on how you feel about pokemon/if you've played gen1 games before, Let's Go could be fun to play since it does have a player 2 tag-along mode. Can probably find them used at a game store or online through the like of Ebay.

I actually really liked Snipperclips. Though I'm not sure whether I'd buy it for 20 quid. Rather not I think (-: It's 12 in the Japanese Eshop but idk whether you already have that set up? I suggest you give the demo a shot with your boy, iirc it encompasses 3-5 levels.
Apart from that I sugges you have a look at the Nintendo Switch Online included games from the SNES / NES era. It's 32 quid for a family account (up to 8 accounts) so with a couple of friends its rather cheap. Trying out a month is also an option for 4 quid.
Also check out the eshop overview page. The US eShop has a sale at the moment I think, e.g. a couple Lego games are aroud 7 quid.

Thanks for the responses folks.
Didn’t know about the family account sharing! Have online already and he likes some of the NES/SNES games already so would probably make more sense to convert to a family plan.

I would totally recommand overcooked. Quite cheap (you can find it on sale even), very reasonable playtime, and a looooot of fun, at any age.
