The DS line also had the perfect shape and price point where they could release so many cosmetically different shells. People would buy multiple versions of the system to collect. The 3DS needed a 2DS line for younger kids whose eyes shouldn't be viewing 3d yet. It was cheaper and I think had a different layout. Many of the different versions also came in multiple sizes.

If Nintendo is serious about replacing the 3DS with the Switch, a smaller handheld version is inevitable. In fact, it might happen even if the 3DS gets a successor.
