I can't see what Pokemon are available a few miles away. but this is a shit ton better than what the game had a week ago.

Well that would certainly qualify as limited testing. Hope they global release this soon. Pokevision woulda shut themselves down the second that things launched. It's exactly what the game needs

It's different people. I didn't love pokevision, and didn't mind not having three-step tracking, I just never said anything cause I thought the game was fine and fun (other than the bug where your nearby wouldn't unpopulate so you had to constantly restart the app to refresh the nearby to track anything)--it was rewarding to track just based on walking and geometry of the detection radius. I don't want something telling you exactly where every pokemon is, because I like a world where you're not entitled to every pokemon that appears on nearby.

The other good part about pokevision was being able to snoop spawns in distant areas to decide if you wanted to take a day-trip somewhere. The worst part about pokevision was being able to walk right up to any pokemon instantly. It was still needed because no tracker but it's not the ideal scenario. This replicates the worst part about pokevision without replicating either of the good ones, as far as I can tell. It's still a step in the right direction but I'd rather they keep refining it.

Was tons of fun / super exciting to have everyone be like "OH SHIT A SNORLLLLLAAAAAXXXXXXXXXX" and all run out to the car to chase it down.

Now that Pokemon instantly disappear when they are >200m away, it's even easier than before to find them. See this: imgur.com Before yesterday you could do the same but you constantly had to restart your app to force-update the nearby list. Tad annoying.

In more rural areas you'll find nothing. Even less than before since pokemon are now attached to pokestops (and there are very few to no pokestops in some areas) Good job niantic. Make the city advantage even bigger....
