this. When I play a game, I commit. Getting older here as well and cant play many games at once. Granted I only started 6 months ago but the only game I really played before that was BW lol.
I really hope melee is at evo though, I want to live vicariously through the stream and watch m2k choke out again :D
Also, I just don't see whats wrong with letting a scene prove itself before being invited to the biggest fighting game tournament and replacing the second biggest game (by attendees iirc) of the previous year.
Tafokints weighed-in on the entire ordeal, and I 100% agree and saw the same from the initial tweet -- if you remember my first post or two in this thread.
Cut ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬the crap, you're hurting the community I understand that Evo is getting user feedback on which Smash game should be included at Evo. This survey has become ugly with its “either/or” proposition, pitting the community against itself. Why isn’t there an option for both? It seems like the decision has already been made if I’m reading between the lines: you don’t want to run Melee, and I’m fine with that.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not being ungrateful. I loved having Melee at Evo for 2 consecutive years. In fact, I would have loved 20. I loved that the donation drive raised $93,000 for breast cancer research. I loved the exposure. The sets were amazing and gave the community much more viewership, reaching a peak 140,000 viewers on Twitch. With that being said, I want to call out a few things.
You (Mr. Wizard) have stated the Melee is a logistical nightmare, which is why you seem so adamant against running melee. To everyone here, I want to make it very clear. YOU did not do very much. Arian + his crew were the ones that went on the CRT hunt to get the 40 CRTs that Evo used. Furthermore, they were the ones that got the U-Haul, transported the TVs, and set up the stations the night before. The fact that you didn’t even mention their efforts until Leffen called you out is appalling. Tafokints was the one that spearheaded the Gamecube/Wii setup situation, since the half-hearted effort by you was very poorly done. Smashers did the seeding. Aside from possibly the main stage and production, smashers did most of the work. So I’m wondering how this is such a burden on your end? If it is a nightmare, Smashers have shown that they are willing to step in where they are needed.
Furthermore from a financial standpoint, we helped out Evo more than any other community. We had 700 unique entrants that entered melee-only and about 100 more that would have not attended Evo if Evo didn’t not include Melee. If venue fee is $50 per head, this means we generated $42,000 in extra venue money for the event, which is nothing to snooze at. Couldn’t we have gotten a third party to get Wii’s/CRTs or use the money towards something? Maybe I digress here.
It seems like you guys have no interest in running Melee. It’s a fair sentiment considering there is no precedence for two games of the same series to be on the main stage. FGC people will complain and I understand that Evo is first and foremost about appeasing the main players such as the MvC and SF groups. I’m fine with that. Just cut the bullshit and say that you want only 1 smash game, which is Smash 4. If Evo doesn’t run both, it’s a decision that you guys ultimately make. Don’t make us speculate and blame Nintendo as a scape goat. Don’t make us prolong an inner civil war between Smash 4 and Melee enthusiasts. You’ve hurt us enough as it is by not including an option for both and pretending to feign interest with Melee.
It’s been a great two years and I wish you guys the best.

I think so as well. Let's hope the more competitive and interesting game will prevail...and EVO doesn't turn even more into a promotion for new(er) games.

This is the most toxic attitude you could have. Enjoy riding the Brood War spiral to irrelevance.
What's your problem dude? I never played Brood War. I only stated that Sm4sh looks ugly to me. I don't want to play an ugly game. Melee is better graphically to me. No need to get your jimmies in a twist. I've seen some sm4sh played so far and it doesn't really seem to appeal to me.
1. the sheer variety of viable characters, even the biggest complainers wont be able to say "lol fox and marth" they have for the most part done a very good job balancing this roster with a few obvious outliers. which leads to the other selling point...
2. Actually able to make patch updates if they decide to go this route and nerf and buff characters as needed which is something the competitive scene for smash has lacked.
I dont need to outline what melee holds over this game because its obvious but the potential is there. If only melee did a better job at balancing speed and power like this game does. You can actually play stuff like bowser and DK and not feel helpless.
I feel like this was the game that shattered the perception of Super Smash Bros being a casual family fighter game
You can say what you want, but it really didn't. The majority of people I know who didn't already like Smash Bros still think it's a party game and doesn't deserve to be at evo. The only reason it got in was due to a vote and the Smash documentary coming at the right time to make people who'd liked the game in the past stand up and get voting.
Smash 4 has every right to be at EVO on the main stage, just as Street Fighter 4 did when it released (although as someone who doesn't like SF4 compared to 3 and 2 it's kinda bad, but I still accept that it's the newer game and will garner the most attention).
EVO is the premier fighting game tournament, for it to survive and grow it's always going to be picking up the newer fighters so it gets more advertisement and interest from the broader internet community. If Nintendo want to support EVO and give them money to have Smash 4 on the main stage then you should view that as a positive thing, not a negative. Anyway if these people hate Smash 4 that much then they'll be happy if it goes on the main stage and fails, but as someone who likes both Melee and Smash 4 I want to see it get more hyped and more interest as I believe it's thoroughly deserving of it, it's a fantastic game.
Melee is old and if we want the Smash community to grow, we're all going to have to embrace Smash 4 and push it, because Melee even though it's good will not get a huge influx of new players due to how stupidly awkward it is to even try and get a tournament setup (I mean you need a Gamecube/Wii and a CRT which outside of certain areas is very hard to find).
the melee community grows by doing one thing, playing and supporting melee. i saw this same thing happen when brawl was released. the result was that the smash community dropped the game almost completely, over about 3 years and went back to melee.

It has online capabilities and has the whole "new" factor to it though I strongly think both games should be at all tournaments that support any kind of smash game. Maybe by 2016 melee will start to fade out of all major tournaments, and honestly it all depends on 1. The people paying money out to the players who play the game and 2. The pro players that viewers know and love stance on the game and if they switch or not, due to money or personal reasons.
melee likely won't fade anywhere. the scene is stronger than it ever has been and continues to grow
Being able to patch smash 4 is a bad thing imo, all the unintended glitches and workarounds which would make the game more interesting will be patched out. Or you might just get some 'head of balance' guy with an obsessive compulsive disorder to do with 50% winrates.

Of course! If you build something where you can compete in and enough people compete, some will play to be "the best" and go to great lengths to achieve this sooner or later.
I assume that most will switch over to Smash 4 though (which is somewhat similar but better in most aspects)

the melee community won't be switching to smash 4. there will be a number of players that still play both and most of the brawl population that is left will move to smash 4. the melee community will keep doing its thing regardless of anything else at this point.

speed and power are the exact issue with smash 4 right now, nothing has any kill power thus the games are long and boring to watch.

It is really baffling how bad the slow characters are in Melee. Like, Falcon has knee and Fox has usmash, which are basically as powerful as anything Bowser/DK have, but the characters are 10x faster. Not to mention all the other things that are awful about big characters like their shields, hurtboxes, etc.

Yeah, DK and Bowser don't even really have strong moves on average, which is pretty dumb. DK has his punch and Bowser his fsmash/uair and that's about it; it's pretty funny really what kind of thought process must have gone into balancing that. DK's tilts and both their nairs are laughable in particular.
On the other hand Ganondorf has a ton of strong moves and is the only (kinda not really) viable one of the big characters.
