Does anyone here play this board game?

Is there a simple program that will allow people to play via TCP/IP or a server or something?

I understand that there is a handicap system, in that case, it should be interesting to play with me even if I have never played before? Does anyone feel like playing this game online with me?

Hello Grot! You should be on MSN more often!

First of all, http://www.playgo.to/interactive - go through this one, it will get you familiar with the rules and some basic concepts.

Second, go to http://senseis.xmp.net (it's the most amazing wiki I've seen, regardless of subject ).

As for Go Servers: The two major go servers are:
IGS - http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/
and
KGS - http://www.gokgs.com/

To play on IGS you need to download glGo (available from the site I linked) and register an account, IGS has quite a lot of users but the average level is pretty high (for a beginner). Still, you can find enough beginners there

To play KGS, you just go to the site and click play go. It's java, and you can play as a guest or register an account.

There's many, many other servers (search go servers on senseis.xmp.net for a list and description) - chinese, korean, japanese, but these two should be enough (IGS is international/japanese and KGS international).

Other good sites:
http://www.gobase.org (message me on msn, you can use my ID)

http://www.goproblems.com (excellent practice)

I'm not exactly strong myself (I'm 22+kyu on IGS.. which is basically half a step above the starting rank ) with a 60-68 record.

Imho, KGS is by far and away a better enviroment for a beginer to pick up go, even more so if you don't speak japanese or korean. KGS has a really good teaching game system that allows you to redo and adjust the position so if you find a teacher to help you out the software makes it really easy for them. Also, much like chess beginers it's best not to get hung up on memorizing openings...ie leave the joeseki (standardized corner responses) study till you are at a level that not knowing it actually hurts you every game. I haven't played in a while but if you want someone to give you a couple very very very basic teaching games i play at around 10-13k kgs so i could at least show you the ropes and some basic tactics.

bah and reading now i see fa didn't actually explain the handicap/rating system. The lowest rank is 30 kyu, the highest kyu rank is 1 kyu with a 1 stone handicap per level. ie if a 18k played a 16k, he would be black and two back stones would be played on the board to make the game even.

above the kyu's are the dan ranks, and they go UP with 1dan being low (but still above 1 kyu) and 9 dan being highest.

then there are the professional ranks which go from 1 dan pro to 9 dan pro (all generally considered higher then amatuer 9 dan, but in reality that might not be always the case). pro's get their ranks differently depending if they play in japan korea or china, at the very top level of play it's belived that the koreans are the strongest of the professional ranks of go players.

Hello,
you can also look at http://www.gofed.be/ and http://ffg.jeudego.org if you speak French.
It will give you the main internet links, some rules tutorial and the different places where you can play.

For those who want to follow the pro scene, you can look at http://igo-kisen.hp.infoseek.co.jp/news.html

I personnaly play on KGS (http://www.gokgs.com/), and I can create a TeamLiquid room if anybody is interested and (if I can use the forum name).

That's actually a bad idea, asking people to play you online. There's a big difference between playing online and playing with your opponent in front of your face.

I've played Go for around 3 years now, but you really can't learn the finer points of it without getting a real teacher. I'll play you on Yahoo! Go if you want. I won't be able to teach you much though T_T

Grot and anyone else for that matter, I can play some teaching games. I'm currently a 1-dan on IGS. PM me if you are interested.

Playing live is easier to teach, but it is definitely doable online. It really helps your improvement when you have someone better comment on each move and the thought process behind it.

edit: I signed up for KGS, I'm there right now if anyone wants to play

GroT careful..

It is the most abstract strategy game of all. It some aspects it puts chess to shame.. It is so abstract there will never be a good AI program out there to even come close to master level, i.e. it is a game the suits the human mind, specially those that are good with abstract thinking and/or math. It is very hard to get good at it, it will take you at least 10 years, and it will eat more of your time than any other game you played before.

Nono, I never said I was trying to play competetively, I am just playing one game per day against a computer opponent (still enjoying it, still never beat him but the games are taking longer every time)

The only game I'm trying to be competetive at is poker, and so far I've failed shamefully! (it's very hard just like getting good at chess or go would be)

Surely I can enjoy the game without spending much time in it, I just want to play it for fun

chess and go are just fantastic games and I'd feel like it was a shame if I never played them. Even though I need to play as much poker as I can if I want to accomplish my goals, one game of chess a day and one game of go (maybe less than one a day, it seems the games take pretty long) won't hurt me

Haha if strafe or brain had Op in here you'd be out right about.. now lol. Anyway, I don't play go but alot of my friends do so I just came in to check the thread. Nice to see TL community is totally awsome and helpful in an obscene amount of ways and on an icredibly diverse amount of topics.

Nice work and kudos to all the people taking the time to give awsome responses and offering to teach and stuff. <3

Go is a game to end all games

unfortunate that I tried to learn it at a bad time~

The keys to getting better quickly (for beginners) are learning the concept of life/death and memorizing shapes and joseki's.

I'm not sure that I understand the need,
either your are in the same room, I would say, use a real game ! (but you can still play with KGS if you have not a real game)
or you are in different location, you need internet, and why not using KGS ?

otherwise, you can look at http://senseis.xmp.net/?GoSoftware. Some client sofware may do what your want, but I never looked for this feature.

I steal unstable wifi from my neighbor because the italian mafia does not let me contract my own DSL, and I would like to play sometimes with my polish flatmate.

On a side not I have already played about 15 games of go @KGS and I am really starting to enjoy it. Too bad my exam period is closing in. Anyways the teamliquid room idea is very good. Explosive gave me some tips the other day.
