From my memory of dnd 2e, the tentacle spell was a level 4 conjuration spell. Level 4 spells become available at wizard level 7. That means he was level 7 or higher. He definitely had access to Fireball. He probably had access to Stoneskin which he could of cast to stop them from killing him. He probably had access to either some nasty single target nukes or crowd control. In 2e, level 7 was when wizards started to become more powerful that fighters. | ||

That shouldn't even be half the possible spells to cast a day for level 7, so it felt weird that he didn't fight for more, especially given how he delayed giving the party the quest for over night (and I think they waited even longer anyway), so he'd have had time to prepare whatever combat spells he needed to have. With a single fireball he could have killed 3 of them outright when they groupped to get healing. Dunno, seems that Riker just gave up a little too easy, although to be fair Evard's Black Tentacles alone could have wiped the party out. If Bregolas didn't luck out with those 2 arrows, as in first hit the tentacle instead of missing or hitting tugabutt, then also 1 hitting both with an arrow, tuga would certainly been dead next round. | ||

If he was a specialist or higher than 7th level then he had a 4th and at least 1 3rd left, which is an easy stoneskin + fireball combo. Even if he did'nt have abjuration for stoneskin (iirc conjurers opposed abjuration) he could of just used something like confusion. I played far too much Baldur's Gate... :/ | ||

I'm pretty sure the disable from the poison was for d4 turns or some. Geoff got an unfortunately awful roll. As for the wizard not blasting the party, well he was injured and there was still an untouched elf ranger with tons of HP so it was not a forgone conclusion that he would win. it's reasonable to think he would try to leverage the dire situation of the other three to potentially end the fight early. | ||
