It just makes categorizations of those choices. There is nothing stopping the DM from further specifying abilities with penalties/bonuses just like in 2e. I believe there is just a general framework that encourages for those options to be considered by new players and DMs alike in 4e. You can think of it this way: 2e: You have a basic attack that can be manipulated in certain ways to provide different effects (if the DM allows it). 4e: You have a number of abilities (all are derivatives of a basic attack in essence) that can be further manipulated in certain ways to provide different effects (if the DM allows it). | ||

2nd edition is pretty boring combat normally - as you guys saw with the goblin cave (that got a little out of hand and boring at some points, my bad). Because of this, players and DMs are acutely aware of the need to be creative to spice things up. So, 4th has a subtle discouragement of creativity by providing crutches for players, while 2nd edition has a not so subtle encouragement of creativity. It takes a strong DM to push players to be creative in combat in 4th, and it takes experienced players who realize that there's more fun to be had in creativity and bending the rules that read so rigidly. In theory, 4th edition provides for more varied combat that is way more interesting, but all too often, people end up just looking at their powers and using them. | ||
