Ok, so i'm compiling a list of "games you MUST beat before you die" so I can have something to do over the summer.
I'll start off w/ some classics and update it as more people give good suggestions. Obviously, there are games like Final Fantasy II which are great games, but aren't quite games that you HAVE to beat before you die.

Day, you must beat G5 in a bo999 (first to 500) before you die. This will give you something to do over summer

All of the X-Com series, especially Terror From the Deep, I got more satisfaction beating that game than I did for any other, and I've only beaten that recently.
Oh, this game alone can easily take up your summer if you don't have any idea what the hell you are doing.

How in the world has no one mentioned Deus Ex? That is, bar absolutely none, the greatest single-player game ever created. Just don't get it confused with its crappy sequel.

wtf with mgs3? It has like the best storyline of the three and it lets you in into what happens in Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, as well as the mgs series and all the characters.

i second a lot Ogre battle(i beaten it 2 days ago for 10 time (the snes one) as fast as i could dual lich with princess + hardcore cockatris rapes all!) and final fantasy 3 (the terra celes edgar etc one). i would also add super punch out and if you really wanna finish something very tough finish Punch out for nes (tyson is unbeatable -.-v).

There are mods to remove Irenicus' dungeon from the game (while still giving you the experience).

F-Zero X for N64 !!!! I love that game so damn much Expert level on all tracks~
Tetris for NES - Lvl 9.5 on B mode And be able to get the UFO starting at lvl 16 A mode - I have yet to do this, but I can do it starting at lvl 15, easy. Tetris is just sick... what a game :D
I guess those are my two games. Tetris definitely is the better of the two.
