So I recently was just permabanned from romscout's stream for questioning the legitimacy and necessity of their current marathon. Basically I went through the faq they had posted (here) to see what the event was about as their title makes it seem like they are raising money to bring in people who will be playing their games on stream at AGDQ. Upon further reading of the FAQ, I came to the conclusion that everyone that is being supported by this event is not speedrunning a game at AGDQ with the exception of Klaige. So that makes it 6 people who are not speedrunning games and 1 who is... Am I the only one who thinks this is disgustingly wrong? I even asked in chat why this marathon is taking in funds under the premise of bringing in speedrunners when in actuality it is not, only to be told to "fuck off" and get permanently banned from the chat. This is just unreal.
-Lindsey King a.k.a. Jazaaboo: an artist who has done work for every major “Games Done Quick” marathon, including the banners and stream layouts, as well as awesome prizes and some t-shirt designs. -Ssskinner (Samm) and her husband Dan: the hosts of this marathon who have been involved with the speedrunning community for several years and given it a lot of support. Samm has been to an AGDQ and the most recent SGDQ and done a great job with casting/donation reading and providing informative commentary for runs. -0xa101 (Adrian): a strong member of the speedrunning community who has overcome cancer and is very supportive of other runners. She will have a great presence at AGDQ! -Klaige: a longtime fighting game player who joined the speedrunning community a couple of years ago and has been widely loved ever since. He has not been to AGDQ or SGDQ yet, but will be running Castlevania: Bloodlines at the upcoming marathon and helping out behind the scenes quite a bit in the future! -J: a longtime speedrunner who has shifted his focus recently to developing games and has not been to a marathon in a while. He will be trying to make a difference once again at AGDQ and might even get to show off a game or two that might be of interest to speedrunners during bonus stream. -Houser: another supportive member in the community who has helped with some of the less mentioned but super important behind the scenes work at AGDQ, such as giving people rides to the airport and doing food runs! He is also a Metal Gear Rising runner who is very entertaining and will be providing some great commentary in the upcoming AGDQ. -The other runners: any surplus we raise will help out the other runners with any unexpected AGDQ travel/trip costs. Additional surplus will be donated to PCF during AGDQ.

Well I dont know who these people are (speedrunning noob here , just got into following it) , but taking your word for it , the document says "these runners include....." , which means they should be running a game at the event , if they arent then WTF !!!!
Regardless , they shouldnt have done that in the chat.

i (speedrunning noob here , just got into following it) dont see a problem with the title they use. i see speedrunning as a big community and everyone who is part of the community can name himself a 'speedrunner' or 'runner'. i dont think they chose that title because they think it gets more donations, i guess they are just seeing themself as speedrunners.
that chatlog is very depressing. (to be fair, we cant see what you wrote. maybe you insulted them )

You know not just runners are at AGDQ right? There's a support staff monitoring the donations and making sure everything is good from the stream to food etc. Also Adrian is on the schedule to do Crono Trigger NG+ if the donation incentive is hit which is extremely likely thus she needs to be there. You also provided reasons on why several others should be there without realizing it. Not everyone is there to run a game some are there simply for commentary or other help. Edit: Not to mention you came off like a huge ass and looked at it like any one not a runner isnt necessary, but thats just my opinion
The stream title is extremely misleading which I believe was Dubsex's complaint more so than support staff going.
A bittersweet day for myself, had a single segment attempt of plutonia get to map 26 where I forgot to press a switch and alas remind still without an exit. Sad, but I was close this time.

I'm glad you brought up the topic of Adrian specifically here. She is an interesting case in that she receives $100s in donations on stream quite frequently. In fact just the other day she got over $300 in one night. This is besides the fact that she is with cosmo who of course could easily fund her trip with the blink of an eye and one wind waker run.
To be completely honest, I don't think anybody should be asking for donations to fund their vacations even if it is to read some chat logs at a quasi-charity event.

If you want to speak about Adrian to quote her roughly "I don't want Cosmo to just pay for me to go to AGDQ." Shes been putting her donations she gets toward not only AGDQ but shes in serious need of a new laptop (theres a picture on her twitter of how damaged it is) she uses part of the donations to also pay for school and says so straight up underneath her donation thing. If you watched her stream as much as you seem to say you would know that she doesn't like being handed things and implying Cosmo could just pay for her is rather rude anyways. Why does dating her automatically mean he has to pay for her to go to AGDQ especially when Chicagothon has become a tradition to help people get to AGDQ
I have literally no idea about all this stuff here, but: If this Chicagothon's idea is to help people get to agdq, wouldn't it be smarter to help the people that don't have other means to go there? Like, saying "she doesn't like being handed things" [implied: so she wants donations] sounds pretty hypocritical to me. I don't really see the difference between donations from random people and a "donation" from her boyfriend
So from a practical standpoint, it would be smarter to raise money for people that don't have a rich(?) boyfriend
Not like I know anything, I'm just trying to apply common sense here.

Then don't donate lol
They aren't trying to deceive anyone that's donating. It's not like they're pocketing money people are donating to charity. It's "donate to help us get to AGDQ". If people put up the money then that's what they're paying for.
Kind of weird to get upset by it when no one's trying to trick the audience or anything.
Also lol @ people saying "she shouldn't be getting donations when her significant other could easily send her". Regardless of the fact that it's Cosmo, that isn't how things work period. What are the relationships like that you've been in?
Edit: Don't get me wrong I don't personally support people taking donations just to travel to events like this. It's a hot button topic in the fight game community too. But if people are donating and they know what they're donating for, there really isn't an issue. Just don't contribute yourself.
"Guys don't give me any money but here is a donation link if you really want to give me money."
Perhaps these people should reevaluate their current situations if they really need the money this badly so instead of playing video games they could get a a part-time job to pay for that new laptop they need so desperately to continue streaming their favorite video games.
look it's fine to ask for donations, but saying you don't want to be handed things, and then trying to get people to hand you things sounds mighty contradictory to me. is all I'm saying here 's cool tho, I'm not nearly invested enough in this thing to actually care whether that's the case or not.

Some people do this in addition to getting a part time job, but yeah I know what you mean.
So that chatlog has your messages deleted and makes it really impossible to tell how confrontational you're being. I've had multiple experiences with many of the people in that chat log and they don't generally react that strongly for no given reason. Yes you could argue that the title is misleading, but it sounds like that's not what you did based on their reactions.
Basically it's a small marathon being put up and people donating mostly because they're being entertained and are finding it a good watch. They're not aiming for a lot of money and anything past what they're asking for is going to get pitched into the AGDQ donations. They're not even mentioning donations very frequently, it's generally a pretty chill and relaxed marathon.
Plus I don't even find what the mods said that shocking at all, regardless of knowing what was being said to them. Depending on the tone of your messages Dubzex, they seemed to have responded appropriately, even if not "professionally."

problem where?

(Disclaimer: I really don't care either way, your summary just seemed pretty disingenuous.)
Why are some people focusing on the validity of the chat log, when it was only meant as evidence to support the main issue?

On the other hand, few replies actually address the issue. It's hard to ask them what's happening without being dismissed as an impolite outsider. Only based on reading this thread, it seems to me that the people who do know them do not want to raise the issue either.
I think it's clear enough who they're raising money for and why. There have been WAYYY shittier cases of this in the past.
Again, I'm just surprised this is such a fuss when it happens all the time in any community that raises money through streams/donating. It was a big deal in the fighting game community a few months back, and I know it's happened before with other streaming personalities. The point is that they aren't deceiving their donators. You might feel that it's wrong, silly, petty, etc. And I personally wouldn't really disagree either. But the people that are donating know why they're donating, so that's that. You're just trying to throw a fit about people giving other people money for something you don't want to give them money for.
