Hey so I was watching the dark souls speedrun on the SDA marathon and heard them say that the record was something a little over an hour, but then I looked up the actual record and it says that it is 32 minutes; is there something I am missing here?

SDA is known to have a really tight control over each and every video sent to them, meaning it can take months to validate a run. Also meaning once it gets up on the site, it's often an obsolete run.

And with asian competition and the lack of a global wiki about WR, it's sometimes hard to keep a track on records.

Edit : Oh just watched the category, it's all about that one glitch that can skip 30~ min of the run.

My guess is that 32 mins is with the glitch that lets you skip content and the one around one hour is legit run without glitches.

Yeah this basically, there is a glitch that allows you to skip to the last boss as soon as you get the Lordsvessel, (you reset-glitch through the door behind the lordsvessel) essentially skipping all of the Lord's Souls.

I was waiting for a good time to donate, wasn't really sure what swag I wanted if any... and then Raelcun started running SC2 and said to donate to name Steiner Violet. Perfect opportunity!

The Dark Souls run with 32 minutes uses the Kiln Glitch which doesn't work in current versions of the game. So in order to do the Kiln Skip you need to actually use a backpatched version. Kotti uses the current version of the game and he plays non Kiln Glitch because that counts as a major skip so it is in a different category timing wise.

Yeah sadly for speedrunning, the most recent version can't even compete with the previous version due to the removal of that glitch. And AFAIK there is really no way to go back to that version once you have patched up.

I dunno if the glitch works in the retail version (ie console version), but its basically forever inaccessible to the PC version now.

BONUS EDIT: Watching Kotti run another route (Faith and Lightning Spear), which seems like it could be good if you got the Black Knight Halberd first. Also, do any of the PC runners use DSFix to get those sweet, sweet graphics? That would be the only reason play PC IMO. Well that and the potentially higher frame rate.

And the fact that the PC version starts up in about 15 seconds while booting up your PS3 and waiting through all the credits and loading screens takes like 5 minutes.

I think the route for Disc 1 in Legend of Dragoon for Haschel is pretty much done, tested out the new changes and good god.

They weren't that big of changes, and there are still a few minutes of mistakes in there. I don't think enough to get sub 3:40 but with some godlike luck maybe.

Time to move on to optimizing Disc 2 I guess.

Edit: I had 2 random encounters in the entire disc. 1 is a very very tight step count that has about a 50% chance of giving a random encounter on the last step out of the area, and the other was just a mistake by me. So a full disc 1 no random encounters is totally possible.

Well kotti prefers the pyromancy route because getting the Halberd is really inconsistent and causes a lot of early resets. It is kind of a rare drop after all and you kill the knight with 0 humanity. Humanity raises item discovery aka magic find. I watched a bunch of kotti's recordings on twitch.tv and in one he said he has really terrible luck with the halberd. The faith route is more of a fun thing, it has a longer route in the beginning and kotti is pretty much the only one using it. If the different routes would be different categories, which according to kotti they should be, he will pretty much have the WR on faith route. Getting lightning spear after the halberd would has a small problem: you need 22 strength and 18 dexterity to wield a Black Knight Halberd in both hands. You need 25 faith to be able to join the sunbros to get lightning spear. Meaning you need to put a lot more souls into stats, if you want both. I'm not sure how tight the run is on souls, but I think they want to put them into upgrades asap. Also the Halberd does loads of damage on its own, not sure if the detour to get Lightning Spear would be worth it.

And yes if I remember correctly most of the runners use DSFix. At least I think kotti said so in one of the recordings on his twitch.. will try to double check if I find the time.

edit: Did just catch Kotti on NevetsGiarc stream. Kotti uses DSFix, NevetsGiarc does not. DSFix does speed up some things (Save and Quit apparently) and you shouldn't use the Framerate unlock, because that can change things quite a bit. So it seems to be a bit controversial. There is no ruling regarding DSFix, because only a few ppl run it and they are way slower than the Japanese guys anway.

Hmm Far Cry 3 should be pretty sweet to run indeed. I really don't know much about the game but isn't the world very open ? Do you have a specific storyline to follow or do you just need to do several specific "quests" to move forward in the story ?

As for myself, I just got a pretty sweet 2:01:22 in Vice City, which I find pretty good for a first full run. Obviously the WR is still pretty far (about 12 minutes) but I feel pretty good, considering I made several significant mistakes and I'm not totally comfortable with choppers and several other aspects of the game.
Flicky, let's race ? :D

That's a really good first time btw. I'll try out Vice City eventually but I got lots of games to play atm.

Callout time:

AGDQ post hype TSSB episode.

Flicky offhandedly mentions that he missed the SC2 run (he wasn't even in the building.)
PJ tries to bring up that he's one of the major TL guys and Flicky changes the subject.
Then Flicky tries to pimp the TL hype to save face and gets the amount of $ raised for Violet wrong.

You should link that episode so everyone can go watch it.

I just want to make sure that people don't think that the glitched run isn't legit. A glitched run is no less legitimate than a non-glitched run in any game, even LTTP or Link's Awakening. There's still some animosity towards glitches being used in games and thinking that they aren't real speedruns if they're used. Hopefully will only be personal preference soon.
