For those who are interested, Sidler and Grischuk are playing the exact same variation as we have in the final of the world chess cup in Khanty-Mansiysk

There is a live video with commentary athttp://chess.ugrasport.com/ http://chess.ugrasport.com/

This happens to me a lot when I lay my eyes on an opening in the past years. I work it out, two weeks, a month, half a year later I see it in top tournament play. I'm waiting for my crazier 1. d4 lines to happen sometimes.

It's 7. O-O for white, so not that similar anymore. The tactics are different in that line.

They almost never play the crazier stuff.

It would take both of them to have a prep in the line and both of them think they have something to fight for there. Real top level chess goes by different edges.

I love Svidler, but this probably wasn't his zomgtrashingtactical opening. And 8... O-O was the book move there. I think I looked at that variation down the line. At least I checked a lot of lines with exd6, dxc7.

I'm not sure that game will go too well for black. Of course he is an hour up. Still...

Thing is - there white is fine even with unusual moves, that's just what I heard in my ears too on ICC.

All white has to do is to set the pawns correctly.

Even a pawnchain like a2-b3-c3 and f3-g2-h2 is good if you get to play Qc2, Nd2, Bf2.

Now what does black do. If exchange white has a better position, but all of a sudden the only piece he can better is his queen, and frankly there's no good square for the lady right now... What, Qb7/Qa6 to connect the rooks? White is just better and should the time control come it could be a long skinning game.

That's after:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Bc5 4. c3 Nf6 5. d4 exd4 6. e5 Ne4 7. O-O d5 8. exd6 Nxd6 9. Re1+ Be6 10. Bg5 Qc8 11. Bxc6+ bxc6 12. Nxd4 Bxd4 13. Qxd4 O-O 14. Nd2

lol... Qa6

There's an awesome trap with 14... Qa6 15. Ne4 Qb6 16. Qd2 Nc4 to grab the pawn and then... 17. Qf4 black can pretty much resign due to the Nf6 mating threat.

Haha... b3 happened, too. If he plays f3 somewhere along the line too I'll laugh.

:/

14... Qa6 15. b3 Qb6 16. Be3

A drawready black's wet dream... If you add 16... Qxd4 it's like omgwtfbbq.

Ok over.

Draw, either reach of time control with equal material and black holds because of opposite coloured bishops and 16... a5 or white can make a small mistake, losing one pawn and holding on during a very long skinning game.

Enough for today. Off with me now.

I don't really see a way for white to pressure without the risk of black just trading off for a draw

We've got 2 queens, 4 rooks, minor pieces, and all but two of the pawns left on the board, and people are really scared of a drawn endgame lol...

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. If we think it's impossible to win a pawn or superior position from Ng5, what's the point of playing the game?

By the way, great name Sisyphus, and welcome to TL

I think some of them may have been talking about the other game Raysalis linked to.

Right some posts are about the game from yesterday, and some are about how we are going to end up drawn because of bishops...

Well, as far as our game is concerned. I've said in a few posts that if it comes to that, I think + Show Spoiler +
we should play 11. Bxd2, rather than 11. Nxd2, so as not to reduce the minor pieces on the board to a pair of opposite-colored Bishops.
