I have like 6, giving me a total of around 80 gems. Then these people come in bidding thousands. Gee, what a fun system.

That said, people are obviously buying stuff off the market to convert, and the auctions aren't very cost efficient. On the plus side, if you had any Backgrounds and Emotes, they've gone from like $0.03 to $0.15.

I have like 6, giving me a total of around 80 gems. Then these people come in bidding thousands. Gee, what a fun system. Lol, I'm 28 and I don't find any of this confusing at all. It's very simple. Trading cards/Emoticons/Backgrounds can be "crafted" for some gems that you can then use to bid on games. Highest bidder win and there's a new auction every 45mins if I'm not mistaken. As to why there's so many gems, it's actually simple, people have a ton of games in their library and a lot of those games gives trading cards. So for every games that gives you trading cards, there's the possibility to craft a badge that will give you an emoticon and a background as a "reward". Those, as mentioned above, can be use to "craft" gems or can be sold on the market, you can also buy/sell gems on the market but only by stacks of a thousand. So, since a lot of people already had some badges that gave them emoticons/backgrounds prior to this bidding event and most didn't bother to sell them because of the low prices and high amount on the market, people started to buy them on the market at low prices to make gems out of them, others put theirs on the market and prices started to increase over time. You would be surprise by the amount of people who are/were collecting those thing. When it comes to cards, it's because of the new "Booster Pack Creator" that they added with this event. With X amount of gems, you can craft booster packs (3 cards), prices vary depending on the game. It goes from 450 to 1200 gems I think. Another thing would be the dupe bug that screwed up everything. During it, I was able to buy nearly 20k gems for 0.03 per stack of a thousand and I was able to craft some booster packs that I've sold on the market. They later reimbursed me all the money that I've spend on the market for gems lol. So basically, I was able to craft a couple of booster packs for free and I made money out of it. Hope this will help.

The point of these random events and cards, badges, etc. isn't "pay us to unlock more content", it's "you're already locked into our platform, so here's some random shit that involves the platform". If you don't like the random shit, cool, just stick with what Steam is...a DRM platform for games. That said, I like Steam's random shit, because I've paid for 5-6 games purely from the "free" junk that they've added in.

If it's on sale, I'd say it's 25% or 33% at best.
