On the other hand it's the first sale it is on (or maybe Autumn sale as well?).
So if you dont plan to play it "soon", it's probably better to wait and buy it during the next sale.

And on the other hand (or foot?..), it's an indie game that is highly original, very good, on sale, and was cheap to begin with. It's definitely worth the price for stealth fans. Kick the devs a bone imo.

It's an indie game so highly likely to be only mediocre and overhyped by the masses just like other indie games (Bastion, Binding of Isaac, FTL, ...).
If you want a good stealth game - vote for Thief, buy Thief 2 and enjoy dozens of "indie" fan missions.

I may be wrong, since I havent played it, but that's the vibe I got from gameplay videos. Also considering that you can get games of the scope of a Witcher 2 or a Civ 5 for the same price.
"Oh this looks cool, even though I never heard about it before and it's a first time on sale" is normally a "nono" for me on sales.

I disagree with your perspective of indie games being overhyped.

I agree with him that indie games get overhyped. Most people hype them up just to be anti mainstream because it's cool to do so in their minds. Stuff like hot line miami and FTL look like hot garbage. If I wanted to play games that looked like that, I'd hop in my time machine to the 1980s where those graphics might be considered cutting edge there.

The vast majority of the popular and hyped indie games are from genres and styles that major companies refuse to invest in anymore.

"Cutting Edge" these days means 3rd person action/adventure or FPS with High Def 3D graphics, so if you want any kind of variety in your genres Indies are really the only place to turn.

Best part is they're priced at a value that acknowledges that less production and development was necessary.
Average means I'm better than half of you.

i dont know why you are bashing mark of the ninja, it has good (2D) graphics and it offers a lot of different solutions to do the objectives. Unlike a other certain recent AAA "stealth game" where the choices mostly are "airvent or hacking?"

I disagree with your perspective of indie games being overhyped. Simple logic - studios with shoestring budgets are not physically able to overhype ANYTHING. Overhype = SWTOR, Mass Effect 3, etc. People on forums and independent reviewers praising indie games generally signifies that said games are worth your time. Bastion happens to be in that category; not quite sure why you brought it up? Not enough FPS shooting for you?

Also, you are comparing a sidescrolling game to a FPS. No doubting that the Thief games are amazing, but it's still an orange to MotN's orange-tinted apple.

Calling Thief a "FPS" and it's gameplay to "FPS shooting" (the fuck) shows that you know shit about the game and the stealth genre overall.

I'm not sure whats going on here. I recommended Mark of the Ninja because I played it and I thought it was really good at being what it is. A 2D stealth platformer. I don't know what Bastion, other indie games or The Witcher 2 have to do with that. This is the lowest price I see it at and probably will be for a while unless it shows up on a humble bundle. I hope these are some of the criteria other people use when recommending games in this thread.

It is better if you have a gamepad.

You are on a website initially made for Starcraft: Brood War, and are discrediting a game because it doesn't have super advanced ultra realistic great graphics.

Oh god the irony is at critical mass.

Speaking of 2D indie games that are great

Mark of the Ninja

Best stealth game since Chaos Theory imo. Fucking fun as hell.

Yeah, they LOOK like hot garbage, but damn Hotline Miami is FUN AS HELL. It looks, plays, and feels like an old school arcade game where it's just you vs a whole army of dudes. Mark of the Ninja is a great stealth game, the aesthetics are a nice touch. If you're playing Hotline Miami for the graphics you should probably reconsider why you play video games.

Finally got GFWL to work...apparently I was missing an important registry file which is critical for a process it relies on (Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)).
It still sucks shit though, do not like DRM at all, especially ones that have me googling and restarting my pc for hours before I know what the fuck is wrong and how to fix it before I can play the game I paid for. I actually ended up finding an old youtube video where TB rants about it, pretty much sums up my thoughts on how I feel about it. Fuck DRM.

I'm kinda set so far this sale. I hope Sleeping Dogs goes on sale again though, or Dishonored. I regret not picking them up when I had the chance

i assume everybody either has or doesn't want mount and blade by now as it has been in heaps of sales but if you haven't, get around it.

there is easily 100+ hours of play in that including mods, not taking into account multiplayer (which isn't my thing).

I bought Mount & Blade collection. Should I install the game and both expansions including warblade right away? Should I mod the game at the beginning or just play through without mods?

Mhmmm... tricky one. I would always recommend M&B Warband over native Warband and I would almost always recommend against F&S for a first playthrough.

For mods on your first run I recommend at least the Floris Modpack. Their "Basic" version is literally vanilla with just some fixes/neat additions, their expanded version to me is what vanilla should have been in the first place. It could be a bit confusing though for a first playthrough. Not sure.

Besides that (I can't remember if it's compatible with Floris or not, I THINK it is but google should be able to quickly tell you) Diplomacy is a great, great small mod fixing, well... diplomacy in the game. Gives you more options and makes things more intuitive imo. Another small thing that's great from your first run onwards is Battle Sizer. The games default settings are obviously aimed for older computers, this is just a small tool making it possible to have up to 1000 units on the field at once, depending on your machine. Play around with it and try to find settings that don't make you lag.

Some of my favorite "real" mods are Prophesy of Pendor (fantasy total conversion, insane content, improved AI, loads more stuff to do compared to regular M&B), Brytenwalda (a realistic conversion set in the 6th/7th century on the British Isles. Incredibly detailed and hard as fuck to play), and Blood and Steel (mostly aims to make the game more of a "tactical simulator", removing some of the more... "bullshitty" skills, has its own insane AI, reworked economy, battle systems, etc. etc.) - afaik the creator was on a longer hiatus and JUST started updating to 1.153, judging from their forum he's gonna be done fixing bugs in a couple of days.

Apart from all that, just go ahead and browse the taleworlds mod forums, enjoy one of the most insane games I know of in terms of modding, easily second to e.g. Morrowind or Oblivion.

and this!!! lord of the rings mod!

http://mbx.streetofeyes.com/index.php/board,20.0.html

i actually just started playing mount and blade again (used to play a lot during beta) so the mod scene is basically completely new to me too. might have a look into prophesy of pendor. are there are any good, well developed roman republic era mods? looks like there are a bunch but i don't know how polished they are.

also it just occurred to me that i have fire and sword but have never actually played it. is napoleonic pure multiplayer content?

Its completely playable with keyboard. Ditch your mouse you dont want to use that. The entire control scheme was translated over to keyboard very well imo. You walk with w a s d and control camera with j k l i. H is normal hit, u is heavy hit. Spacebar is for running/rolling. Shift for shield, tab for parry. Q is action key, e is for using items. F x c v are for switching items. Then just rebind camera to T and youre all set.

That full keyboard scheme looks crazy... I might try it.

I found after a while the mouse and keyboard controls were actually adequate once you get used to them. The only thing that was truly infuriating was the targeting system which was far far too sensitive with the mouse. Perhaps that has been modded or patched, I'm not sure. I think if you are really interested in the game it's certainly worth getting even if you are forced to use m/k, just know a controller is the best way to play it. The game is too good to be passed up.

I loved hotline miami, luring is kind of overused in the later levels but the fight mechanics are great overall and the storytelling style is really effective, + Show Spoiler +
I agree with the interpretation that's it's an overt commentary on game narrative, which seems hard to do effectively without being pretentious but they pulled it off
.

Mark of the Ninja on the other hand I was really disappointed in, it seems totally overhyped to me. This is coming from a huge fan of thief and it's other ancestors... I played a ton of thief II particularly, then I downloaded mods so I could get even more thief II. Unfortunately for me mark doesn't have a whole lot to do with thief's style of gameplay. Thief relied a lot on making you feel clever by having you infer hidden information (I heard that guard whistling... I bet he's going downstairs right now) and mechanical skill, mark on the other hand is a straight up puzzle game with a light/dark mechanic. Nothing unexpected happens and there's more or less zero recovery potential if it does. It really is nothing like a 3d stealth game and I found it got stale, most of the way through the game I uninstalled it.

This might be a little off topic, but I purchased GTA IV: Compelete yesterday. Unable to activate the game on Windows live Game etc. - thingy. It says the product key given from steam is invalid. I can still play the game and stuff, but does this mean I can't save and load games?

Indeed. Indie games bring a lot of needed variety, creativity and actually interesting gameplay. Dismissing that because they don't look like run-of-the-mill AAA titles and because people hype games is childish and retarded. Besides, an interesting and flawlessly executed art style can often be more enjoyable than standard 3d stuff when it comes to graphics.

Unless you only care about realism or something silly. But that's not why I play games atleast. The main reason is because it's fun and engaging. And variety, creativity and actually interesting gameplay is fun and engaging to me.
