If I were to make an analogy to quantify how similar/different they feel relative to each other gameplay-wise, I would say Civ 3 to Civ 4 is very much like BW to SC2. Civ 3/4 to Civ 5 is more like Starcraft to Warcraft 3.
If you're not really into the series or you're a new player, the only difference you'll really feel is between Civ 5 and any of the previous ones. So if you liked Civ 3, Civ 4 is probably a safe purchase (you get a lot of new stuff, but it'll still feel very much the same), and Civ 5 might surprise you slightly with a few radical new twists it brings (like mentioned, hex tiles, positional and tactical combat etc).

civ 4 is also probably the best to buy because it has a bazillion of really good modifications.

Decided not to get L.A. Noire, but I see legend of grimrock, I'm watching the WTF is, but anyone else have any thoughts? Also, I am considering magicka for 2.49, but I just don't see myself getting into that.

If you have at least 1, better 2 or 3 friends, get Magicka. Magicka coop is AWESOME. It is incredibly much fun. Dying is not very scary, and everything you do does friendly fire too, so people blow each other up by accident all the time, and everyone laughs. I can HIGHLY recommend it. Also, best Magic system EVER.
But it is not really good singleplayer. It is completely designed for coop.
Also, i did not notice that incredible bugginess people are talking about when i played it about half a year or so ago. I think those were mostly launch issues that got resolved pretty fast.

Legend of grimrock is really good imo but it's a niche product, the control scheme is old school much to my liking but others could have a frustrating time turning the camera with Q & E or right clicking every square for attacks.
Overall I'll say it is a fantastic game but not for everyone.

I'd recommend Warband, personally. I believe that one has the most 'good' mods available for it, plus you can get the Napoleonic Wars expansion for it.
