- Kings Indian, - Sicilian after 2. Bc4 - Caro-Kann (Advanced or otherwise) - Bird
These are the public-requested, but also coming up.
- Two Knights Game (as an integral part of my rant on why engines suck) - King's Gambit
Game Analysis
- Live game analysis with GM Alejandro Ramirez - Game analysis of your sent in games - Analysis of random games from titled players (mostly blitz) I gathered from ICC. To show where my thoughts differ from most, what I think when I see a position and how even titled players can fall victim to not so complicated things. - As some kind of rest random watching and ranting on actual then live GM/IM blitz games.
Community Event
- TL Simultan and - TL Consultation game vs me - Someone suggested this and it could be fun. There is a piece set on ICC that makes the pieces disappear as if you were playing blind chess. I will try playing so in a few longer time control games (maybe 15-minute or longer) and see how it goes. Of course it's different from blind chess since the other player sees the pieces just right.
Game Psychology
- How, what and why does it win?
Preparation and Planning
- How I prepare when I sometimes take chess more seriously. - How would I prepare for a tournament. - Why does it change according to the style, the format, or the time. - Some short ideas about how to build up your opening choices. - How do some openings transfer into midgame and later endgame and why is it good or bad? How does it relate to planning ahead?
and so on
Random Chilling
- I will sing. You've been warned. - There will be times when I will just lay back and take a break, maybe eat a bite or something. During those times it could be cool if you bombarded me with casual questions or whatever. I could play a quick game of SC II or something other than chess - but nothing that would take too long. - If some of my friends decide to come over and make guest appearances we will probably banter and chill some.
Shit I sort of lost interest in chess and picked up go. Then I lost interest in go. Then I lost interest in StarCraft. Then I lost interest in being fat =). Now I got interested in StarCraft again. Now I want to get interested in go and chess again but no time. =/
What I'd like to learn more about is the endgame. Even though it's probably the part I've studied the most I still find it to be the most interesting part of the game. I find the rook endgames to be the hardest so that's what I'd like to see more of.
there you are. you have been gone for a long time dude. glad to see you back around. miss watching chess live streams and beating IM's and calling them out for being that bad
Yes, yes. This is awesome. I'd love to watch you stream.
I would really like to hear about openers and the theories behind them. Plus, if you could relate to some good ol' chess history, maybe some classic games, then that would be double-awesome. By the way, do you think you could get featured on TL just for that show? Chess demands a big audience.

Just be careful you wont be interested in being fat anymore.
Awesome, I'll definetly check it out when I got time! I saw the option for streaming chess amongst other games and I was like "huh, never seen a chess stream before". Cool initiative
Hi :} I'm somewhat new to TL and don't know much about you or if you have done this before, etc. Can you share some of your chess background? I'm assuming you must be a great/advanced tournament caliber player if you're doing this, but I'd like to hear of your chess accomplishments.

I remember when i was playing Chess religiously as a youngster, the teacher always stressed out how Karpov doesn't beat his opponents, he helps them beat themselves. :p
Awesome. I've always enjoyed and have been interested in chess, but have never gotten a chance to see how the pros think. I'll be looking forward to your analyses!
I have no clue about chess, i mean i know how the pieces move and stuff, but thats about it. Will definately watch just to see how complex chess can get :D

I haven't played chess in awhile but I'd like to get in on the simultan. TL has gotten a lot bigger lately (in members)...will there be a cap? If not, maybe we can overwhelm you with pure numbers...
Seriously? Kamsky beats Anand in blitz. If you beat in Kamsky in blitz, I'd rather not play you in standard. I'm a 1900 rated USCF and 1800 rated FIDE player, but I'll definately 100% pass on getting embaressed.
I started to adopt the King's Indian Defense (usually play one of the Queen's Gambit lines as white), but I'm having trouble dealing with people forcing closed positions. I'd some help in keeping up a dynamic game once the dust settles after the first 15 moves or so.
Thanks to our glorious campus Wi-Fi I got cut off right as I was posting this.
Okay, let me put on my latest favourite song and get down to replying. It's a long post, so take heed. I also edited the original post.

I hear you there. It takes a lot of time. I barely play once every few weeks.

Could definitely do that. And I could probably also suggest some resources for further research and self-improvement.

I've been featured for a while now, and I'm scoring over 300 hundred watchers since then - for which I am very grateful. Getting featured came right before my move to the US though, so you probably couldn't have seen me more than twice like that.

I'll make sure it will be available through one media or the other.

I never really used the English word(s). It's pronounced exactly as "simultan" in Hungarian (that's what we use for "simultaneous"), so I always used that.

I got lucky. But I would love to elaborate on it during the stream. The game itself was quite bad, though.

Yes - ICC would be the place to go. Yes it is pay-to-play. On the other hand you can get a one week or so trial which could be perfect just for this event.

The exam poll is mostly for students in North America. We tend to finish the exams very early - in exchange for working more during the semester.
I will see if I can be playing, but I will definitely collect some of my games for analysis.
Zona wrote: ...will there be a cap? If not, maybe we can overwhelm you with pure numbers...
I don't plan there to be a cap. One thing to watch out for if there's going to be a lot of participants - it could take several hours.
I would love to do an online simul in the oldstyle way. Where we don't care about the clock I just move in each game lineary and you have to move when I got to your board again.
Har-Zvi doesn't deserve to be a record holder anyway.

That's the heart and soul of the KID! I would love to talk about that one. I already did so before. I took it up when I realized engines don't know shit about playing it right back in the days. They still aren't all that bright about it.

Sorry I haven't seen your stream, but just wondering, are you Ng5 on ICC? You're an IM, right? I think I've seen you play, maybe against curtains or something.
Ooh, I second the idea of King's Indian discussion. I used to play 1. d4 exclusively, but now I'm trying to broaden my horizons so I'm trying to learn some 1. c4 play. I usually transposition into the Queen's Gambit if my opponent lets me, but I'm having troubles with games that lead into the KID.

Why stop there? Play against Rybka 4 and get dominated lol. Na, I'm kidding. But The King is a relatively weak engine now compared to the newer ones...even though it will completely dominate most people. Please don't play against it or other engines. It's quite boring to watch unless ur Naka or something.
I'd love to see you talk about opening theory(KID, grunfeld, English, Reti, or whatever) and middle game theory(static and dynamic features, sacrifices on h7,f7,g7, etc., specific mates), and the type of end games and middle games that can arise from certain openings.
Man I used to play so much chess, but I hated having to learn all of the different openings. Like I would get good at an opening and then when I played black some guy would open some opening I never saw and went down some crazy line where there was a non-obvious tactical advantage, so frustrating. Chess isn't "solved" but there are so many lines that the learning curve is all about memorizing patterns and positions. This should be fun though
Yes, but as I said it was a very awful game. I only realized it when I wanted to analyse it on stream. I kept wishing it would be over already.

Rybka isn't that strong either unless you run it on higher-end machines giving it full power of all your processors and memory. Which will make even the best hardware giving you lag in all your other windows. I really dislike how it is programmed and all the craze about it. It's cool, yes. On my new desktop PC I'm liking it more, yes... But in general just because an engine beats the other engines it doesn't mean it's zomgimbadestroyerwtf... It just doesn't fall for some of the stuff others do... It still does fall for some other crap. Especially with the bullshit opening books they are selling exactly for Rybka... Used to make me nauseous. Let's take old openings, delete some lines Rybka doesn't like and add 5 more engine moves to the end... FAIL. I have several lines refuting Rybka's opening book. If it chooses any of those opening it's dead against a reasonable player. If you want I will prove it.

Can do. But one quick comment is... You can always shoot out with 2... e6 and unless white gets back to some of the main lines try for ... d5. Should give a solid game in most cases. At least I remember playing it a few times.

Rus_Brain wrote: How to find parralel chessmaster abuse?
Easy. Check for running processes. If you have it on your PC you're toast. If you don't you'll either be very slow while copying engines 100% and when you're left on your own you play like a noob - which is detectable. Or you write an über-imba software that sends the moves through another PC in which case you'll be too fast using 100% engine moves - and be busted. Bottom line is you use 100% engine moves and you are busted. And there's not a handful a people who are good enough to use engines, play strong on their own and be undetectable. ICC has a good modding team. Of course I know of cheaters who pose as nice and good players who 'try' teaching others - sickening thinking about some people considering them teachers - but they are all small fries and most of them will get banned eventually.

As black, what openings do you prefer vs D4? I've look into the Slav and Grunfield, but I find that I am too lazy to study all of the theory.
And what's your favorite vs E4? My personal favorite is The French. I'm sure I lack the skill to competently use these openings to their full potential, but I try. Lol.

I play literally everything as black. I never really found something I could stick with for long.
Some things I play more in a particular time control/scenario, though. I wouldn't touch the Grünfeld in correspondence as black most of the times... I usually don't get into the KID in short (-5 minute) games. And in longer (30+) games I try to keep away from the positions I mark as 'boring' or 'drawish'. Which doesn't always intersect with the set of openings considered as boring in general.
For example one of the most boring shit I can imagine in a long game is the King's Gambit's 'Modern' variation (can be reached through the countergambit too, easily) and I don't know if many would agree with that. For me it's just so *yawn* I generally just push 3. d4 if something like 1. e4 e5 2. f4 d5 happens lately. (*)
I also used to play the Alekhine in my starting few years. Luckily I grew out of the habit, I think, but when I started playing blitz again I oftentimes found myself pushing 1... Nf6 just as a reflex more often than I would have liked.
Edit: (*) But then again I just randomly push anything if anything happens in the first six (or up to twelve) moves lately. After that I generally get more serious.

We can always have another event next year. But that's so far ahead, let's just survive exams and flights back and forth first.
Can't really promise to make it ground-breaking if I'm black and we play the Caro, though.
Edit: What happened to the event, by the way? I checked the start of it, but in general wasn't in the mindset to keep up or read up on any of the previous ones back then.
Edit 2: That reminded me of a hilarious story from my correspondence days. I might tell here instead of waiting for telling it on stream later.
Nowadays, I'm pretty terrible at chess. Hopefully, I could try to relearn; but I'll be happy to watch you play chess, and give an explanation behind the moves.
Will try to watch this nonetheless, if I'm back in my home town then.
I'd like to see alternative openings like the dutch or exchange french or the kan. A look at the Ruy would be nice (it hurts my head to study it) And maybe pull some stuff ourt of Dvoretysky's endgame manual- it's pure gold Har-zvi's voice kinda pisses me off
I'm interested in picking up chess, but am a total newb. Is there any chance of me understanding what you're talking about? If not, would it be possible for me to read up on something/ play games online between now and then in preparation (is there site you reccomend for a amateur?)
Do you exchange off the white Bishop in the advance Caro-Khan as black? If white offers to trade bishops I've been been moving my bishop back to G6 so that if white exchanges I get h file pressure. On the other hand this can back fire in some end games, but I think it works ok for blitz.

Smoothie wrote: I'd like to see alternative openings like the dutch or exchange french or the kan. A look at the Ruy would be nice (it hurts my head to study it)
Dutch is cool, but I'm not sure I play it too strongly (good enough to drew Naka in 15-minute with it, though - but that's a bliss). There's a cute line in the Exchange French and everyone wants to know about the Caro. I honestly don't know why. I'm not sure I'm good enough to play the Ruy properly. I've been planning to start playing it just to learn, but it would probably need longer games or researching - neither of which I'm doing much of in the past half year.

I think you have a chance to understand some parts - and you definitely have a chance at having good fun. I can't always explain everything. I try and I go into as much details as I can, but of course sometimes I have to skip things too.
As for preparation. You could just try the game anywhere in the meantime. There are tons of free sites. Yahoo is full of 'domeImhot-bots' and Pogo is very small. In general there's much "who has the bigger dick" going on on hobby sites, and if you get high you'll meet cheaters. Also the clock management on those sites sucks in general and they usually don't punish disconnecters, laggers, etc so I wouldn't take them too seriously. For a complete beginner I wouldn't necessarily advice a pay-to-play site, either.
All in all just play a few games wherever and chill. (Sorry I really am not competitive.)

When I play Caro I play it with g6 usually. Especially in the advanced variation. And then Nh6-Nf5. Maybe h5 pre- or after Nh6. Or Bh6 as well. I don't remember if the main line goes Bf5 after Nh6 to exchange the bishops and get a knight on f5 at once. It's not a bad position even if you just double up the pawns with Bf5-Bxf5-gxf5. I played that a lot too.
I don't like the usual advanced as black. Maybe 3... c5 is a nice trick, but it's just one of the things that can bore me.
Chess.com is a fairly laid-back site. It runs correspondence games (You have up to 3 days to make a move usually, and you play several at once) and live games (timed). You'll lose a few games, but instead of placement matches like SC2, your ELO rating changes incredibly fast for the first few games, so if you're an amateur, you'll plummet down to your level quickly.
I've never watched Ng5 before (fairly new TL member, but I'm certainly going to tune into this, since he sounds legendary based on what I've heard. Looking forward to it!
I'll try to reply and update the original post as well later tonight. I'm pulling the nth all nighter right now and I need to take a little sleep, though.
Salivanth wrote: You'll lose a few games, but instead of placement matches like SC2, your ELO rating changes incredibly fast for the first few games
Actually those are placement matches. Before you finish those you are called provisional, which is just like pre-placement match status in SC II. The only difference is there being usually more than five provisional games (the general idea was twenty when it was founded), thus it can make a more delicate and precise approximation.
I also don't find them all that important anymore. You are going to climb where you belong anyway - and the play and fun itself you have while climbing there can be actually far more fun than your points. That and you can get to know more people. That coming from someone who doesn't give a rat's ass about ratings, though.
GolemMadness wrote: Rook endings are boring. If you really want to learn about them, get a good endgame book. There's a huge amount of stuff to learn.
It depends. For most people Kramnik is boring. But for me he's one of the players I still love to watch. He was probably one of the last players who could keep surprising me every now and then when the other 'more interesting' players started to get boring to watch.

I also got more PMs about trying to get a double cast with Day[9] or Gretorp or Chill or guys like them.
I don't think they would be too up for it, but if any of you can convince them I'm more than up for it. It could also be fun if I could guest appear on someone's casting stream sometimes - but other than my deep knowledge of general playing psychology, general game sense and intuitions - I don't really play or watch SC II all that eagerly, so I don't know how much I could add.
PS: Of course thanks for all the interest and support, guys. It goes without saying.
Haha, haven't played chess in probably a year, but i really should get back to it
My suggestions:
for openings: The English for other stuff: kinda random but, some type of explanation of what you are thinking while playing a game (what goes through your head on each move, some of the psychological type stuff)
after much thought, i'd like to request the Sämisch variation of the Nimzo-Indian. It leads to fierce attacks and there's variations that are being strongly contested right now. In particular, I'm very interested in this line:
Am I the only one that would prefer listening to Ng5 rather than to hear someone else alongside him who, in comparison, would be basically incompetent?
If Jaedong offered to stream and chat with viewers personally for 24 hours about Starcraft in English, would you want him to cast together with Tasteless?
You mean like 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. a3 Bxc3 5. bxc3 c5 6. e4 that goes on with 6... Qa5 7. e5? Because in case yes I did that before. It's one of those weird variations that can manage to be both complicated and incomplicated at the same time. I'll explain later.
And in regards to the Gretorp stuff - I actually contacted him and it would be nice if he could tag along a little - I think it should be fun.
Don't be so offensive, guys. It's a 24 hour so there will be plenty of me-time. It's just fun if you have guest appearances - that's what makes a fun show fun after all. And it also takes some stress off of my chords.
And it's a perfect way to make new friends - which is always awesome. Ever since I've come to the US I just love to meet new people.
Personally I've been fancying the idea to make a guest appearance at some SC II stream / tourney broadcast - if a chance arose I would gladly take it. Especially if it was a streamer/commentator I like or adore for some reason.
It's not like I'm any decent or I know the build orders - but that's why I would not be the host. On the other hand I think I have pretty neat insights into psychology in general and during a game - and through my experiences I can usually tell when there's a turning point in a game even if I don't have a freaking clue why. It's been the same with chess ten years ago. Or my job.
You never know when you meet such people - and small stuff like that can make your life so great. Things happen at the most random ways in life. If anyone I can tell you that.
So don't be scared. I can't think of more than one thing that could keep you from having enough chess content in that 24-hours.

I tried doing that at the start of the semester with USCL. I think I had two streams on it, but I just couldn't keep up with the time. I think I should be able to stream more regulary in the future, but I don't want to promise anything since... Well if we are at quoting lyrics already...

looking forward to it
Actually I didn't know it was GSL finals, but I was sure I would collide with something bigger.
That's the only day I can really do it well, though, so I don't have much choice.

I think that's how he heard about the whole stuff, probably then. Or at least connected.
Mothra wrote: Do you know what site the simul will be played on?
Yep.
ICC. You can just make a trial account for a week for free. It has a nice interface that makes it easy on me to set up the simul, or just bother an admin to help me with it.
emperorchampion wrote: Is there a timeline, so we know when certain things will be happening, or is it just gonna be whatever you feel like?
Tomorrow evening I will send a PM out to all the signed up players for the simul to do it when everyone is available.
Other than that I plan to start it up with some random talk. Maybe some game analysis mixed in with playing chess or talking about a particular opening. Later when GSL is over and more people tune in I will cover more analysis on games and more popular openings. Maybe I will even play more.
Later in the afternoon as I'll be getting more tired and it will be the best for everyone (afternoon in NA, evening/night in EU) I would switch to more theory. Talk about psychology, how to prepare for games, how to work out your openings. Why talent is still bigger than engines.
I will probably also freestyle because I just can't prepare a full 24 hours in advance and my schedule is very tight up till Friday actually. This can mean anything - from digging up my old pgns for interesting games and position (I have hundreds of those) to just randomly watching better players and give insight on actual running games real time.
I really want to do this later thing. Commenting on actual games or digging up pgns. I want to show you real time where my thinking is different from most people. Where I don't waste time or where I do, because I think it would be interesting for you on one hand, and on the other hand you would probably like to hear it.
So yes I have vague plans, but nothing is written 100% in stone. If you can only watch for a few hours and you really want to see something you can just PM mer or write here and I'll try to cover those parts when you are around. If it doesn't happen I will just mess with loading it all up as vods later.
PS: One thing about VODs though. It might or might not happen within the next three weeks due to me going home to my family. But I will definitely try doing it ASAP and you won't be missing anything in the long run.
Edit: I'll try to add an approximated timetable, but I really can't promise it will happen before the event starts. What I know for sure is LittlePeasant will have a tourney that day, so he'll probably only be on in the evening NA time. While Ekaterina is in Siberia and she'll probably only be on during the first few hours of my stream and then possibly later at night.
Edit 2: While I can't promise to make bigger updates and timetable, but I will be around the PC more for the next couple of days, so I'll be able to give quick replies spattered around the day. I'll probably spam my own thread just to keep it up in the list.
It would be nice to dedicate some time to teaching stuff that are categorized as "beyond the basics". Helping people like me who just started taking an interest in chess, but have no idea where to start to improve =/
darthcaesar wrote: Will ther be a VOD? I'm goign to be on the move that day T_T
That's what I was saying around the end of my last message. I'm flying home barely thirty hours after the stream ends, so the VOD section might only come in mid-January. But if I can find the time between family and studies I will get it done from home. The reason for the delay has another reason. I want to do some good editing if I can. Maybe I won't from the get go only later, but I want to cut it into little parts so if you only want to re-watch a certain half hour or certain event you could. It should be a lot of work and I really can't promise to get it done like ever... But I hope I will be able to.

My ideas about teaching might differ in basic points from what most others would tell you - I'll talk about it more on stream - but I can really only tell you to play and play while you enjoy the game. That will do you the best. Also watch out that you never do it as a burden. It will do you no good at all.
Other than that you might not feel while listening to me, but every small thing I - or anyone else - tells you is important and is improving you. I also am positive that I can make my explanations enjoy- and understandable for players with less knowledge. Sometimes you don't remember it or you can't recall it an hour later, but it stays there in your memory - well hidden of course.
So basically my advice is - come and try to enjoy the stream. And don't ever be afraid to ask questions. I love to answer questions and I'll be there for 24 hours.
Okay, according to my local time, the stream begins on Saturday Dec 18 at 5 pm, but December 18th is a Sunday. Can anyone tell me how many days until this starts?

December 18th is Saturday. The stream, according to the OP, starts at 1am EST this Saturday. I'd say it will start at 5pm on Sunday for you as you are 16 hours ahead.
About all the dates. It has two date lines in the OP because I tried using the convert to local time function, but it was a little buggy for me, so I tried giving it in EST and CET both. It just happens to convert them both into your actual local time.
It will be Saturday - 18th is Saturday, I know I'm flying home on Monday the 20th.
It's 1 am EST and 7 am CET.
I'm thinking up what to cook up on Friday so I'll have it done on Saturday. Maybe some pancakes, but still wondering about the main meal.
I'm excited for this event, I even registered on TL for the occasion instead of just lurking and watching streams. Any chance I could see some review of the Sokolsky opening? Specifically 1. b4 c6. And since you're already doing a review of the Caro-Kann (Advanced) could we see 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 instead of Bf5?
Okay so far it seems the simul is going to be after 4 pm EST. I still need to get feedback from half of the players. If it's not good for them that time I'll just give two smaller simuls, no problem.
I'm still wondering if I could manage a blind simul against this many people. Would probably a take a longer time control though.
Ng5, can I play you in a regular blitz game or something sometime during that 24 hr timeline you have? Although I'm not that strong of a player....I just thought this was intriguing.

Sure. Just be on and ask on channel and it should be more than fine.
I think I will stick to LiveStream for this occasion since I don't have time to check out the other streams.
Okay guys. I need to sign off and get ready and maybe take a small nap.
Get yourself ready - and also: keep checking the OP when it starts because I might switch streams to own3d in the last minute, so I my channel might not be listed as featured for a few hours after start.

I can't keep it up due to some technical difficulties. But just to stay true blue I will play Desert Strike in the next 3 hours to make it a complete 24.

Have a great holiday everyone!
Take care of yourself and your family.
See you all.

I know I already did after you crushed me during the simul, however, I want to thank you again for doing this. It was really fun to watch high level play, and I hope you do it again some time.

The blind match was pretty awesome. The Simul was definitely the best event of the stream, what was the final score? I think Ng5 lost one, drew one, then won the rest- out of like 8 games or something lol.

Very nice event.

I believe he went 8 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss. Definitely a very fun event - please let us know when the next one is Ng5!
Great stream Ng5, it was a pleasure to watch what I could. I look forward to having a VOD (hopefully) that I can watch or download and re-watch over a few days during my chess 'self training'!
Thanks for the event and t he stream Ng5, that was pretty fun and getting destroyed during the simul as well (tho I think I had a small lead in the middle of the game, still ahve to run the analysis on that game ;o )
