supposedly the ddos originated from 4chan/some disgruntled minecrafter who is pissed that the updates aint coming as fast as they used to. it's being done as 'motivation' for 'greedy notch'. It's lasting a week as a warning/test of sorts. the anonymous dude posted this on the minecraft forums and it's copied here:

This has to be the single most .... thing I have seen. Why would some one think that, this would help in any form or fashion? If this is even real and not some kid just doing it for the lols.

The weird thing, is that there is a Halloween style update coming soon, and something like this would only delay it. Seems counter-intuitive.

I'm bringing a server online for you guys to get your MC fix in. There are, however, a few things I need to point out.

First off, this is a temporary setup. This will remain online 24/7 until the MCNet issues are resolved. One MCNet is back up and running, the server will be rolled back. The reason for this is because I can let you guys access the server now, but moderation is disabled. You guys can grief things, build things, spleef, or just hang out. Anything done on the server for now will not be saved.

Secondly, the server will be running in Offline mode. This means you do not need to log in to MCNet to join, and as such everyone will be named "Player".

I wish there were a better solution, but I figured this is better than nothing for now.

Again, nothing you do in this server will be saved, as everything will be rolled back when MCNet is back up and running.

Apparently right after posting that, MCNet came back up. Not sure what to do, as I don't really want to set it back to requiring logins if MCNet is just gonna go back down again in a few minutes.

Server's up. MCNet was just up for me a second ago, but it's back down again now.

This temp server will remain until I know for certain MCNet is back up for good.

Again, NONE OF YOUR WORK WILL BE SAVED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
