Is there anything like the old "Building on a Budget" articles they used to do for Standard? Looking to get back into Magic (been our since Avacyn) and just want a cheap basic deck to get back into the running and learn all the new cards. Trying to figure something out.

Edit: Talking like $20 or less budget, not the several hundred $ ones.

You can make a fnm winning rdw for $20 if you shop around for lowest prices.

Well I am only playing MTGO, can you please explain more however? As I explained I am out of the loop, so I don't know what deck that would possibly be.

Building on a budget doesnt really work right now, (RIP Wb tokens </3) a lot of good stuff is expensive right now http://www.mtgo-stats.com/ here is where you can check out the top deck from dailies.

The problem with BoaB is that most decks right now have heavily costed mana bases. I guess you could throw something together like mono-black without liliana's and that can be under 20 tix, but not exactly super competitive. The list would go something like this:

4x mutilate
4x vampire nighthawk
4x desecration demon or other undercosted fatty
4x staff of nin
?x removal

?x swamp

If you search for the expensive list, you can see what you think. good luck!
If we fear what we do not understand, then why is ignorance bliss?

Not really looking for a top tier deck. Just something that can hold it's own (even if an overall losing record) vs the main decks, so I get a chance to see them work and see what the meta is like now. So does not have to be a deck to win tournaments, just study the opponents on MTGO. Problem with stuff like the theme decks is they get their asses kicked so bad you don't really get a good sense of the deck you are playing against, as they don't have to go all out with everything.

Was thinking a Mono-White Human deck, as most of them are super cheap. Idk tho. Thank you for the link!

Play Red then. The cheaper you go, the more potent red is simply because they have access to cheap burn spells while no other color gets that. Mono-white is terrible, don't do it.

Interesting tourney going on now, the streamer's championship. 8 player invitational, with each player simultaneously streaming from their perspective. 9 rounds total, RTR draft, standard and cube.

Mono red is definitely the only deck you can play for around that price and be somewhat competitive, but the meta right now is brutal for mono red without "good" cards (hellrider mostly) with thragtusks and sphinx revelation being everywhere lol.

Yea I heard about Thragtusk/Sphinx and the life game stuff that's why I was shying away from mono-red, but looks like I shoudl stick with it! Thank you for all the info! Also already have a bunch of mono red stuff like the Noble, so that will further cut costs !

Basically, they are going to playing with 25 life, regardless of what deck you are playing. Mono-white doesn't have that reach from burn spells and Thragtusk is such a bitch to beat that you might as well be playing Red.

If you don't want to spend that much, Mark of Mutiny type effects are still good against Thragtusk. Sphinx's Revelation though you don't have to worry as much as if they are going to draw 3 cards (usually) you are probably not winning, so you just have to beat them before Revelation is relevant. You do want something for Rhox Faithmender and your biggest headache will probably be Centaur Healer.

Then of course, there's ye olde Traitorous Blood/Fling.

Mark of mutiny is good for thargtusk cause by round 5 when they drop him they should be within kill range anyways unless you totally bricked early so that extra swing and one less blocker should finish it.

Side note: holy crap people streaming auto play decks and pretending there is thought involved in play land and say go

Toss Flames of the Firebrand in the sideboard for decks that play elves, go to 2 Brimstone Volleys, play 3/3 Traitorous/Fling.

It gives you reach as well, even if you're flinging a Hellion at their face.

Obviously, it's strictly the budget option, but it's still fun, and isn't that the point?

Problem with Fling is that its really only good with Traitorous and most of the time just having another burn spell is better than a Fling. Fling is terrible if you can't get through with creatures and in situations like that Traitorous is just better. I would say Fling with that curse that makes your opponent attack is ok since in a race situation where Fling buys you a turn (by killing them earlier).

In any case, Fling is only good in very niche situations if you are using it as a reach card. Some times it will be better than a burn spell but most of the time its going to be underwhelming. 3 Fling is too much in either case since unlike drawing multiple burn spells drawing 2 Fling early is pretty bad.

Also NotSorry, while I can't say for the streamers you were watching, I take a fair amount of time in very obvious situations not for the current turn but future turns for many different reasons.

So the last 2-3 times I have got back into Magic I have gone with mono-red budget decks, and sort of getting sick of them. Spent a bit of time in MTGO last night making a U/W control deck. Curious what cool cards (ie: cool AND cheap) I may have overlooked.

Note: This deck is not meant to win tournaments, and will not win Pro Tour's. Just want a fun deck to get used to all the new cards and current meta on a budget. I KNOW there is better $400+ decks, and I know there is even likely better budget decks, this is just something for me, as I like making my own decks.

U/W Control

Creatures
3x Nivmagus Elemental
4x Delver of Secrets
4x Serra Avenger
2x Interpid Hero (maybe need to 3x this?)
1x Restoration Angel (already have 1 that's why only 1)

Spells
4x Index
3x Cyclonic Rift
3x Dramatic Rescue
3x Search Warrant
3x Detention Sphere
4x Nevermore
3x Supreme Verdict

Artifacts
3x Moonsilver Spear (think this might need to be 4x)

Land
4x Azorius Guildgate
4x Glacial Fortress
5x Island
7x Plains

Sideboard
None yet, as I doubt this deck will last very long and I have no clue of the meta aside for Thragtusk/Sphinx.

This is a simple control deck, that uses small creatures to win. It sort of lacks a true finisher, I have a feeling someone here might be able to help me. Right now the Moonsiver Spear is the closest thing I have to a true finisher, and it's not much of one at that. I don't know for sure where I am going with this deck but I do like the control that Sphere/Nevermore/Verdict create, so I kept the creatures small and things I could afford to part with if I need to launch a Supreme Verdict.

Thanks for checking it out, and try and keep any suggestions for cards at 2 tickets or so per copy !

Oh yeah, Happy New Year also!
