D3 is being marketed as a PvE focused action RPG, something you relax with for a couple hours with a few buddies and slay monsters. I don't WANT to come across a rare drop and suddenly have to weigh its value to me vs. its monetary value. What I want even less is to weigh that value when browsing the auction house for something to buy. Nothing is more real than money, I don't need or want reality imposing itself on a game. That's the beauty of having two AHs though. You can choose which one you pay attention to because there will always be an implied gold-to-money exchange rate. It won't just be "shit items on the gold AH, good items on the RM AH." If the gold AH is somehow bare, someone will be able to make a killing in gold. That opportunity will vanish and things will balance again (supply/demand/etc...).

WoW was never thought of as an esport but then there was a huge market for it cause of the player base being so huge. It will eventually become an e-sport maybe not at first but somewhere in the expansions there will be tournaments for D3 Unfortunately that's completely up to Blizzard, if Blizz chooses to actually focus on the Arena and balance everything then yeah it could be an esport. However, Blizzard has made if VERY clear that the Arena won't be balanced and they won't be working to make it that way - of course that could change at some point but if it's unbalanced horribly it can't be an esport. they say they won't balance it for PvP, but the nerd rage will force blizzards hand. No-one wants to PvP if there hero gets roflstomped because of unbalances. No, people get rolfstomped cause they cant use their characters...

tl;dr is that I do not think it will really affect D3 that much. Best items will be expensive. Cheap items will be cheap. I'd say there still be a lot of people who still buy and trade things using in game gold rather than RL money. Using RL money skips an aspect of an RPG - Progressing your character. For lots of people, progressing your character using your own time and using anything within the game's resources is part of the fun. If one uses RL money, they skip out on that. So I think a good amount of people won't really bother with RL ah market. In other words I don't really think it'll affect much. Also one thing this has done is really limit the amount of "farming" for $$$. There's a cost of putting an item on the AH (there are some free chances given each week but most gold farmers mass more items than a few). Also since gold farmers will be competition with regular players selling their item, it means Diablo 3 will be less of an attraction for gold farmers. Finally SC2 being "split" into a trilogy had a ton of bad press. I think this is something most players will probably accept (or have to accept) once D3 comes out (Unlike RealID on forums, this actually has some good points and is safe).

Diablo The beta test approaches! We’ve just updated our System Check program and would like everyone to update their Battle.net Beta Profile information by running the new one. You should do this regardless of whether there have been hardware changes made to your system. Battle.net - English Forums -> Diablo III Beta Profile Update forums.battle.net sadly for me it's "File not found"
