I think his "poor" (relative to who he is) performance in tournaments is mostly him choking (especially in Code S) or people blind countering him.
However, I do think that LotV is a much better game for him to display his skill in and should suit him more than HotS ever did simply because of the new economy focusing more on obtaining, securing and denying resources and because Terran got a great new space controlling unit in the liberator.
Was he really that high in HotS? Now I am fucking mad ... Hopefully he has better luck in Lotv The hype is real that is for sure !
He was top 3 on HotS ladder from August until KT dropped out of Proleague (at which point he stopped playing HotS) this year. Where he was playing some of his best Starcraft this year.
For Flash where he is on the ladder actually is a pretty decent tell of how good he is right now. With other players their ladder rank tells you nothing.
Even before that, around IEM Katowice this year (when he got cheesed out by Trap in the Ro16), I remember him laddering to Korea from Katowice to prepare for his match and being rank 1 back then with a ridiculous win streak (something like 30 wins in a row) despite the latency from EU to KR.
He was very high ranked last year (around top 3) during his godlike streak that ended in him winning IEM Toronto and just before HSCX from what I recall.
It's just that not many people know these things and assume FlaSh is slumping or something when it's clearly some mental block he's having trouble with.
On another note, this is his signature that a friend of mine obtained during IEM Toronto. + Show Spoiler +
I also own a T-shirt with the signatures of FlaSh, Jaedong, Life, sOs, Zest and Taeja (also from IEM Toronto) on it if anyone is interested in a picture.

Yes please, let us see that awesome t-shirt!
Thanks for showing us his signature, a signed item is something I'm not gonna have any time soon :'(

Damn I'm so jealous, it's so sad I'm living in Austria and there's like no major tournament here, can't meet those awesome guys to have them sign my stuff.

I met CJ herO @ IEM Sao Paulo (which he won!). I chose to take pictures with him instead of asking for his sig... But the pictures died with my old phone and now I have no sig and no pictures :'(

Why didn't you transfer them to your PC or something?
Also Flash dropped to rank 32 on ladder because of a losing streak and then laddered back up to rank 12. In one day. Not sure that's a very healthy thing to do <.<

Because I had them in the memory card, but somehow I can't find the card T_T
Flash's case really has me wondering. Usually the top of the korean ladder is a good indication of who is good atm and it shows a few weeks later in the next tournament results. It was the case for his IEM and HSC run last year, but in GPL he looked like a Masters player... I would think of a mental block if it wasn't Flash, the guy with 9 years in progaming who won almost everyhting and went through so many things... For now I'm gonna blame the brand new and unstable meta, but I hope he finds it soon or at least when PL begins.
Speaking of that, only 1 month to have PL back! :D :D :D

Mental block doesn't seem that unlikely tbh, considering the amount of times Flash has choked when he was in good shape (that GuMiho series in the last GSL was a complete choke).
So looking forward to PL. I just wish they'd announce some details already t.t. Also dates for GSL/SSL qualifiers. ~.~ Plus looking forward to which new players get signed by which teams.

He's been playing a whole lot lately, about 40 ladder games per day yesterday and today so I think he's motivated, which is good. It's 1:30 AM in Korea and he's still going at it.

To be fair, he only lost TvZs in GPL which was clearly his weakest matchup by far at the time (he even dipped below 50% in TvZ on ladder at one point). It felt like he was trying to play HotS in a tournament setting since it was what he had experience with rather than try out something he's less comfortable with.

I can't even list all the times he threw won games in the final map of a series that would decide his fate in tournaments (especially GSL) but I can give it a shot: - The game vs soO in GSL S3 2014 where he got about 35 drone kills early on and just walked into banelings in a choke, or the deciding game of that series when he attacked right before he got 2-2 and got rolled.
- Game 3 vs DRG, that same day where he didn't wall off properly and essentially died to a ling runby.
- Game 7 vs Parting at HSCX. He should have never lost that one, not to take anything away from Parting's insane blink micro.
- Game 1 vs Dream in GSL S2 2015 where he barely missed (his vikings had moved pixels away) a drop after having stabilized on 3 bases with mech against bio which ended up costing him the game.
- SPL game vs Innovation, mech vs mech, where he had a massive bank and a raven fleet... which he ended up losing to a few thor volleys.
- Game 3 vs Innovation in GSL Ro16 S3 2015 where he secured a big lead with hellbat drops but died because of walking into the fire of 2 tanks on the high ground from Innovation (he had no vision there), sieging his 4th and just lost half his army for nothing. (Game 1 from that series on Echo is the most godlike display of TvT I have ever seen in SC2, what a game that was.)
- And of course, that final game against Gumiho you mentioned.
Each of those losses hurt me almost as badly as they hurt him, especially that final one against Gumiho where he looked completely devastated.
I remember that Gumiho game. At that moment I thought "that's it, we lost him after this". So glad that he is playing LotV and motivated :D We have Flash for another year!
Man some moments still hurt so much. I will never forget his 1-2 loss against DRG in the gsl ro16. A stupid ling runby cost him his advancement. If he had won that he would have to play some lesser Terran(I think it was Cure). It was his best chance of winning a GSL imo. Another one was his 3-4 loss against Parting in the HSCX. One overstim cost him his 2nd title. Parting was all in at that point,so all Flash had to do was hold back to his base, instead he moved out and overstimed. And the worse of all was his 2 consecutive throws against Innovation especially the one he gained huge macro advantage and moved to some sieged tanks. His macro was insane in that series, I mean really unbelievable..
I didnt watch the last Gumiho game. I just F5-ed the result. Couldnt handle the pressure. This has to be the worst esport moment for me. Maybe the last game of Boxer vs Anytime finals comes close...

SK Telecom T1 INnoVation.
Against GuMiho, in the final game he moved out onto the map while doing a tech switch into ravens. Meanwhile, GuMiho had better upgrades (Flash didn't have mech armor) and a bigger ground army since he wasn't doing a similar tech switch. That was stupid.
Probably doesn't mean much. Could be he's on vacation, could be he's playing custom games with match history disabled, could be he's playing on an alternate account (most really good players have a bunch).
If I ever find another account of his, I'll just not tell you anything about it. You panic way too fast for your own good.
He could be playing on any of the other KT players account too...
Don't panic @lastride, he has been practicing a lot and even participated in a tournament so I think he's already committed to another year of Starcraft
I mean MC has like 3 or 4 accounts that he keep on using and switching and so on, one of his is only Diamond. CranK sometime uses Alicia's account to ladder, so I think Flash not using just one account to practice is perfectly understandable.
