Yep, awesome for a week, and then, no more crazy finales... No thank you Even money wise, it would be kinda stupid to stop. He's sooo young, probably doesnt have many expenses (I bet almost everything is paid by his team and sponsors), so his $100k earnings are just a huge bonus (in THE BANK). And yes, an engineer would quite easily earn $100k/year, but actually saving 100k is haaard ^^. But really, it's all about not wasting his talent for me ^^.
I agree with you, but do you mean a doctor? An engineer typically makes far less than 100K a year, especially to start. I'm not sure how long it takes to become a doctor in france but in the US you have four years of undergrad, four years of med school and generally no less than 4 years of being a resident before you make anything at all, and if you're only a resident for 4 years that means you're a pediatrician or you practice internal medicine, the lowest paying practice areas for doctors -- 125K - 150K, possibly lower.
Assuming he can always go to med school whenever he retires, it's much better to earn a 100K+ now than 125-150K ten+ years in the future, for a variety of reasons including the time value of money (a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow, and way, way more than a dollar 12 years from now). If he's earning more than 100K (and there's no reason to believe he won't continue to win, since he seems to keep getting stronger), from purely a monetary standpoint, there is no way he should go to school now. Moreover when you factor in how (relatively) famous he is, how little he has to work to make this money (according to Stephano, he practices 5-6 hours a day) and how much fun it must be to travel around and compete, he definitely shouldn't retire -- unless of course he doesn't like the attention, travel, etc. Long term, it's clearly in his interest to transition out of starcraft and into medicine, but to delay that transition a couple years makes a lot of sense.

Especially right after a tournament win. Its sad to see greats like boxer/nada/july and even the first greats of sc2 like MVP and Nestea slow down and eventually retire after they reach a point where the don't win at all. Leaving while your on top will make you remembered as "the one who would still be the best" even if he might not have been kind of like savior. Effort (bw player) retired soon after winning OSL in a comeback vs Flash(0-2 into 3-2), but 1.5 year later came back and hes nothing like he was(kinda lost the edge). So its double edged sword if Stephano won MLG/IPL and stopped playing and never came back, yes kinda... If he had to live with some sort of bitterness later no. Not worth it. All in all Winning MLG and IPL isnt as lasting achievement in grand scheme of things as many people think to be. Even GSL win fades after 2 months. Its nothing like OSL/MSL when people are remembered for a looong time.
What i mean i doubt in honesty when Stephano says he can cut all his ties "just like that", i very doubt, even if he would not win IPL/MLG i see 0 chances he will stop. Competition drags you, you will never leave it without fullfilling major goal, its not like he couldnt start studies earlier if he wanted, i still believe all this money talk is just a cover and tease for community.

its nice to have some money saved for ure studies- u will need it! so why not one more year. u can studi after this without a prob.

On the other hand, group A would be insane, with MC, MKP and the korean terran Ganzi...and Sase is good too I just hope he make it strait to pool play. If he lose 1 match in the open bracket its allmost impossible to get a good result. If he however go 2-0 in every match and then get into pool play I like his chances of getting very high. But the problem is the open bracket. Polt and Stephano could meet eachother in the open bracket thats how hard it is I agree, if you get in the groups, you have the same privileges as the seeded players and get placed very high in the championship bracket even if you lose some games. In the loser brackets you have to win ~10 games in a row to get to the same spot.
I remember Incontrol getting 4th at one MLG where he was 8-8 in games. (with help of extended series as well) moonan (who lost to Huk in open bracket) was 22-9. He got 8th. You play some worse players, but still.

The question isn't whether he's going to quit at the end of this year, the question is...... Is he going to stream today? :D

i personally think he is actually trolling us with all this school talk.
People dont get to the top without a deep passion for the game, else they will get whiny and blame looses on imba and never improve. You have to be incredibly passionate to get to the top, and even harder is to maintain being at the top.
In my honest opinion, People who have played RTS games almost there entire lifes cant just Quit just like that, Its like saying you going to stop doing crack after 8 years of doing it everyday. It just does not happen like that. Even if he does decide to leave starcraft, he will regret it . I always say i rather be broke and do something i really like, compared to doing something that i dont like but make more money from it.
If he leaves and hes in med school, im sure he will feel really empty inside, Never again will he see a crowd cheering him on, never again will he feel like hes really somebody in this world. Instead hes a dime a dozen in a med field. Is that really what you want? Anyway usually some young people like him have this tunnel vision attitude, where its like " i must become doctor/lawyer or engineer else i have failed in life. What they dont realize is that when they do become the doctors ,the lawyers etc its such a boring ass lifestyle that requires you to be professional almost 24/7 . Money dont buy happyness.
He making good money from these tournaments + gets a salary from Millennium and travels the world. Only a retard would leave that sadly to say.

Your rant about people wanting to be doctors and one paragraph above you talk about passion. What if he really wants to be a doctor, also sc2 will not be around forever, and nothing guarantees that he'll still be at the level he is in 4 months, thus wining no more money.
"Only a retard would leave that" seriously? Lol he's being smart thinking about his future that's all. I'm sure that if he wins enough money and has the same success he'll keep on going for at least one more year.

He's not trolling. I don't know this for a fact, but I get the sense that Stephano is very close with his family and parents and that he makes those decision with them. Right now he's being a good son, and respecting the agreement he made with his family.
Personally, I want him to keep playing SC2, but whatever he does, I'm sure he'll be successful and happy because he has a great attitude to go with a great intellect.

The problem with this line of thought is that the party doesn't last forever. He's at the top of his career right now, but how long can he keep winning? The difference between sports and professional fields is that the former requires you to be better than your peers, while the latter only requires you to be competent. Competence is a lot easier than being the best. Fame is a fickle mistress - Stephano doesn't want to end up a washed out once-good-player getting by via odd jobs in casting and coaching.
For this field to really flourish and become legit, it needs safety nets for players - ways to get back on a great career track once they stop playing. Otherwise, no one's going to want to risk the best years of their lives doing this just to end up in a ditch ten years down the line.

You nailed it there. Thats the biggest problem in most sport. Many young people try to become professional in football or whatever and most people fail or got nothing to fall back to when they done. And we are not even close to the money those players make. So yea very dangerious to not prepare for the future.
I do think and hope he gonna take 1 more year as a progamer

So, in your words it would be retarded of him if he left playing games for let's say studying physics (which no doubt I'd give to him easily if he has a slight edge for natural science), or economics or medicine in times where world economy is as unstable as right now? You really think that sc2 skills will be worth more than a solid education in these times? IF another 2-3 banks collapse his money is gone and after that earning money won't be as easy as a "pro"-gamer because it will sit tight. If he really does quit after this or maybe another next year then he shows way more maturity than alot of other 18-year old kids and shows his true intellect. I'd really congratulate him to that decision and mabe it'd be appropriate if you'd -before throwing weird relations around- maybe rethink your life or priorities?!

Stephano making InControl his bitch on the ladder! <3
|
Incontrol did a lot better than Stephano's other opponents today. That's the thing with Incontrol, though - he's very good at upsetting top players with unorthodox builds, but his standard play isn't solid enough to win again and again, so he ends up exiting tournaments after getting a good win.
|
Well Stephano played his famous anti-protoss no spire / Ultralisks / Infestors strat, ... ie. troll strat, suicided 10 infestors for nothing and still won Stephano vs JYP practice match now, it looks like all EG protoss want to add him to friendlist and practice, dunno why xD
