It's always the same pattern:
1. Japanese debut with old Korean hits refitted for the Japanese market
2. Simultaneous debut in Korea and Japan with new song/album (optional)
3. Japanese-only songs

It always goes downhill in the second phase, and the third phase is a disaster most of the time with crappy songs, which luckily don't make their way over the pond very often (but in almost every case, the Korean side suffers too, because less Korean releases). The only groups that actually launched decent Japan-only songs were 4Minute (Ready Go, Love Tension), and After School's coin flippery.

AOA adheres to the same pattern as the groups before them, and has now entered stage 3. Enjoy the shitty songs,
and less regular promotions from AOA in Korea from now on.

I don't know about male k-pop, because... I don't care :/ Don't know if there are any good examples there.
