To ensure this thread won't be closed, you must adhere to several a number of simple rules; - Please use spoilers when quoting a post with pictures and/or videos.
- When posting large quantities of media (pictures or videos), please begin spoilering after the first piece. Grouping related videos in the same spoilers & labeling is recommended.
- No reposting of old material unless justified
- Posting any material with little or no relevent discussion accompanying it
- No passion-induced flaming of each other because 'x said y sucked' etc.
- Keep the expression hate of music individuals/groups to a minimal level
- No 'pagetopping' in any form whatsoever, as it constitutes spam equal to posts similar to 'first'.
- No vulgar fan fics or wet dream stories. It is creepy, weird, and it dehumanizes the people who you are here to celebrate/discuss.
- Normal posting standards that you find throughout the rest of the site still apply and will be enforced more strictly from here forward (2012/03/11)
Due to the poor nature of this thread in the past, temporary two-day bans will occur more than often if people slip up. |
I want to take this moment and congratulate a good portion of KMD posters who rooted for Crayon Pop as underdogs since the beginning, not even half a year ago they were only doing streetperformances in wacky jumpsuits and now they perform on the stage of the MAMAs with the biggest worldwide viral act of 2013! GJ Guys^^
Personally, I was never convinced (and still wouldn't call myself a fan) but that's more due to the lack of interest I show in Kpop nowadays or mainly for new groups. I only really stick to the older groups of the 2006-2009 generation (+dbsk) and follow their releases.

I should have clarified, Fiestar takes cute and still tries to apply sexy to it. They take it to a place that CP won't because CP has basically said it wouldn't work for them.

As much as I like Crayon Pop, this song is still pretty boring, and the MV in a Box being a big white background does that no favors.
Tara's pretty decent this time around. Jiyeon looks really good, and that's all that really matters for me from a visual perspective, haha. Songs aren't bad, not their best, but pretty good.

See, this I like. They just look so much cuter in these choreo things than trying to make box MVs.

Dunno if I would describe it as less corporate though. Chrome CEO basically said he planned on the weirdness and street performances to be their draw from the beginning and specifically modeled CP off Japanese groups like Momoiro Clover Z. Everything in kpop is formulaic, CP just used a formula basically no one else has until now whereas every other girl group basically slots itself into 1 of 2 molds.

Feels like most groups have moved on to full blown sexy as of now. Not much cuteness going on.

Sexy sells better, or so the prevailing logic says. I would say it stands out a lot more, i.e. is more memorable.
There aren't really that many notable* girl group releases to begin with, so if it's slanted one way during a cycle then it will seem to be slanted more by comparison.
Think of who released since October:
Normal 2Eyes - Shooting Star 2NE1 - Missing You Davichi - Letter Gahee - Who Are You? (Not very sexy to me at least) Hyorin - Love & Hate IU - Modern Times
Cute Girl's Day - Let's Go
Sexy AOA - Red Motion [Confused] Bestie - Ass Shake Miss A - Hush Nine Muses - Primadonna [Gun] T-ara - Again [Number 9]
Both Fiestar - Curious [I Don't Know] (Mostly just because of the revealing stage outfits)
If you go back to September it's predominately in the "normal" category.
This basically gets you a pretty low instance of cute, which I think has always been true if we actually track through the releases, while a more even distribution of normal and sexy, which is all largely subjective anyway.
It's all perception.
+ Show Spoiler +P.S. I don't care about whether you agree with my specific categorizations; it just means you're missing the point.
*Notable is used loosely. I know e.g. 2EYES isn't particularly notable, but I also don't exactly want to include every single group that's effectively already dead.

Craton, I would agree. I think there has been predominantly a shift away from cute towards the middle and sexy. Obviously the sexy gets the most attention and I realize that hurts Korean music overall because there are things that get posted here from time to time like Park Ji Yoon "Mr. Lee" or a trot song I can't seem to recall that are quite catchy and I wonder where I would get more of that instead of whatever the girl groups are trying to peddle.
|
I don't think it "hurts" the music at all; it's just a facet of it. People like what they like. I don't like trot and it has nothing to do with what other songs are out there.
|
I think girl group music blows but I don't mind it. As long as I still have my ballads.

Hurts as in the focus remains 90% on it and 10% on anything else. At least what gets through the filters (even here in this thread) to audiences outside Korea.
This isn't a criticism of normal/sexy pop, it's a criticism of the coverage it gets comparatively. Just like Quentin Tarantino gets so much attention for his "homages" to Asian films as opposed to attention those homaged films (which are, arguably, a lot better than what he makes) get. Not a perfect apples to apples comparison but it gets the point across.
|
Not really. The audience here generally likes mainstream music and not indie/trot. It's not like people don't post the other stuff, it just gets largely ignored due to disinterest.

forgot to include to CP to cute cat. ..or in the weird or super fun category
|
I got started through clazziquai project & epik high I AM the 1%
also this cute -> sexy cycle happens all the time - eg, so hot/nobody -> gee -> abracadabra -> bo peep -> lupin, etc (I think that's the correct chronology)

SM posted their rookie teasers, I think seulgi falls below the Sm standard for looks. Prolly can sing really well.
