There are some exceptions, such as Sistar,T-ara,After School(up to some degree) and Kara and(who had a breakthrough with Mister cause of the choreo and catchyness of it and Rainbow is not one of those exceptions, Secret up to a degree I suppose is also one of those exceptions, however I think IY helped them alot with that and it took them 2 years with eveyone out of town.

Also I feel(but this is personal I suppose) that Rainbow does not have that one member that stands out and or has a pale skin and stuff such as Sohee, Sunhwa, Yoona, Jiyeon, Sulli and Hyunah(admiteddly also most of them big 3) but they don't have that single member that stands out to the koreans much.

Look at CCM and DSP, both have one huge group, T-ara and KARA respectivly, yet their other ''projects'' dont seem to do well with the exception of Davichi(and that is only marginal success).

And then there is the what, ~30 girlgroups who have debuted last year?The only one who is succesfull is Dal Shabet because appearently they had enough money to throw in 3 (or more) promotion cycles in a row with never a break, and they aren't even that succesfull, on the other hand we have A Pink, who with excellent marketing is already big and won their first Mnet award.

Yet the other girl groups, numerous as they are , are nowhere.

So yeah, being part of big 3 (or cube) is a pretty usefull skill toi have because as it turns out, in pop music, money and connections are pretty important
