Oh shit, I forgot I've seen Yoochun and Jaejong acted in dramas. And supriseingly they held their own. And all five of DBSK speak fluent Japanese. Haha, that's insane. Too bad SM paid them shit, so they split.

Of course they would have been successful without SM but you can't ignore how large part SM has played in their careers. Bad contracts is nothing that only has been a SM thing, it's been bad in all of Kpop except for YG I would guess. SM's artists still earns plenty but the biggest question is if their cut is big enough, and that's most certainly a no.

Yeah they're definitely still way up there in terms of talent, though I think that JYJ got the better split, especially for vocals. Yunho can execute some sick nasty choreography though and Changmin does have a very powerful voice.

I'm so glad that we're having a discussion on the artistic and performing merit of boy bands ><

Korea basically perfected boy bands... and it's no surprise boy bands have put out better songs than the girl groups this year. 2010 and 2009 were the years of the girl groups, but they have gone downhill since then.

Their contracts may seem bad but you have to consider that idol bands are solely performers. SM groups are all extremely well trained and talented performers, but performers are nothing without producers, composers, production managers, mv directors, fashion designers, set designers, make up artists, publicity managers, etc. On the surface, it looks like theyre the ones raking in the money, but a lot of work from a lot of people go into producing one successful act fronted by a handful of idols.

While I agree with you that this is the case for most idols JYJ aren't really like most other. Just take a look at their latest album In Heaven and you'll see that it's largely produced by the members from lyrics to the music. Any group with that amount of talent that JYJ has would eventually make it big however they would never be able to get as big as DBSK once was because you need to be backed up by a big company for that.

I just said that SM paid them next to nothing. I know they wouldn't be as explosively popular without SM.

And I don't buy it that SM can't afford to pay them. Yeah the upfront cost for their productions must be pretty high, but after DBSK sold like tons of albums, they should have been able to pay good salaries easily. And SM is the only ones with a history of lawsuits. So that's gotta say something about the way they treat their stars.

edit: Are we actually having a 2 year old debate, haha.

SM paying them "next to nothing" still got them rich. But sure they should have gotten a lot more money out of it that's true. I'm just tired that people don't think they benefited from being in SM.

Nothing is better than bringing old debates up again, JYJ's lawsuit together with WG's US venture can be discussed forever. Guess this is what the guy gets for bringing up male kpop, it's just a matter of time until JYJ's lawsuit will be brought up.

I don't know why everyone thinks Minho is terrible? Because he can't sing as well as the others? A lot of k-pop stars aren't great at singing tbh. As a rapper though Minho is great. Especially in "GET DOWN!"

not a huge fan of shinee apart from Replay but I really like the Ost that one of em did for city hunter

Before splitting, I think that it was revealed that each member of TVXQ made somewhere around $2 million each, which is decent, but pennies compared to American or Japanese pop stars. I'm going to safely assume that every other idol makes significantly less, except maybe Big Bang.
