In Korea, getting to the 100k mark seems like a good milestone for those very popular artists. Does Japan get tons more sales on average? well japan has been experiencing a decline in physical sales over the past few years due to the rising popularity of downloading (via services similar to itunes). their chart, the oricon doesn't take it into account. for japan, singles and albums are listed on separate charts. a successful single/album would probably be considered to be in the top 50 end-of-the-year charts. for singles, that mark would be 100,714 for 50th place (1st place in 2009 is 655,498). for albums, 50th place is 133,098 (1st place 1,326,959 and 2nd place 1,243,298). so yes, japan gets much higher sales on average, which is why a lot of successful korean are crossing over to japan.

I mean here you have a thread with other 100 pages in it, all dedicated to Kpop, but no one seems to like lady gaga or britney spears or the like. = /

Birtney Spears was pop for her first 2 albums but then kinda got out of that genre because of the societal pressures to become more "sexy" and become more mature. In American pop, I think the target audience seems to be more for those in their early teens (I guess like the Jonas Bros., Miley Cyrus, maybe?) while Kpop targets early and late teens and even those in their 20s. Back in the 90s when the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync were popular was when I consider that the American pop age. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and you can start an American Pop discussion page and get tons of replies =P. I can't really explain it, you like the music you like.

It's interesting how you're sticking with your generation (90s kid?). But yeah, it's totally a generational thing. Some American pop artist songs can cater to the late teen demographic as well though. There just isn't a pop thread to discuss it.

Unlike, the US, an average korean will not be so picky about the genre of music they listen to. So things like ballads, hip hop, RNB, soul, rock, dance, electronica, pop, girl group sensation, etc etc are all pretty much lumped together. American music industry, on the other hand, is much more devoloped and the music has a more specified target audience who tends to just ignore the genre's they are not inturested in.

Sorry, if I listened to any current American pop I might be able to give you a more indepth reason. I was born in the 80's so I started listening to music from the 90's and that's mostly where my experience comes from and I remember that music being very popular. Eventually artists started shifting more toward the more mature genres or maybe I just lost touch with it since I aged. But yeah, mostly what gameguard says. Kpop, how we use it, is really most Korean music all lumped together.

I like this song a lot. Performance wasn't bad. What's the name of the girl with her left arm out of her outfit?
