This movie sucks horribly, the dialogue was george lucas quality, there were plot holes that were never resolved (aka outright ignored) or resolved by some bullshit, then there were the cameron's take on the ewoks on endor final fight. The love story was below pearl harbor's quality and you literally had to turn your brain off to miss the massive fucking discrepancies in the movie. 30 mins in I was like man I hope they don't go down the environment versus coporate greed path, 30 mins later I was cursing at myself for going to the movie. Shit's been done before, except better, the story telling sucked, the dialogue sucked, the action was so-so, the only good thing was that the CG was very well done. Cameron made this movie in the literally most simplified and dumbed down way possible. semi-spoiler below: + Show Spoiler + for example, when we are first introduced to pandora, it's portrayed as a place worse than hell, but the fucking regulars were pretty damned happy and overall morale seemed pretty good for an isolated base with everything around it trying to kill whats in it. this kind of shit is repeated multiple times in the movie, and really just insults me as a movie watcher that my intelligence is that low to not notice shit like this.
Hehe I'm not saying the dialogue in Avatar was super great or Oscar worthy or something, but please don't compare it to the prequel Star Wars, because throughout those movies the writing and dialogue was SO BAD that it actually took you out of the story. In Avatar you felt immersed the whole time (ie the dialogue couldn't have been that bad). the one exception was when they said "shock and awe" and "fight terror with terror" which obviously led to everyone thinking of Bush and getting taken out of the story. i don't think they needed to do that (even if i agree with it) because its pretty obvious the parallels without such heavy handed words. The funny part is that at this moment, Avatar is winning the Best Picture Oscar Race. Its a very very close race between "Up in the Air", "Hurt Locker" and "Avatar". Avatar is 2nd place, but Up in the Air is losing momentum (currently 1st) and expected to go behind Hurt Locker. If I had to pick between these three movies, I would put Up in the Air > Avatar > The Hurt Locker. I wasn't too impressed with The Hurt Locker, but I was very impressed with Up In The Air. Avatar should not win Best Picture however. It should win all the visual effects categories for sure. And as for this entire story/plot debate about the "shutting off your brain" and "taking it as it is" concept, this sums it up. http://www.racialicious.com/2009/12/21/and-we-shall-call-this-moffs-law/ That guy sounds like a huge douche that I wouldn't want to carry out an intelligent conversation with anyway -_-

It was pretty good....but I can't fucking believe they actually called it "Unobtainium". I had read a review where it mentioned the material as unobtainium but I simply thought the author was being facetious/a fan of tv tropes. I nearly burst out of my seat laughing when they mentioned it in the movie.
I mean LITERALLY? Thats almost as bad as the "General Grevious" shit in star wars.

it was awesome yeah i know everyone's bitchin about how the story was so cliche, but i went in expecting that so it was fine. i went to c it in 3d but the fuckin imax tickets were sold out

I thought the movie was perfect, except of course for the minerals they were supposed to be fighting over. I can't for the life of me figure out why they named it Lyrinax. I mean come on what kind of a gay confusing name is that.Seriosly ever time they said that name I had to remember what it was. I would turn to my friend and be like "hey what was that word he just said?" and he would say "oh i think its the mineral thats hard to obtain" and then the guy in the seat behind us would kick us for talking. Totally ruined the movie. Whoever let them decide on that name should be fired. They should have just named it something simple so people can understand.
You know, something like unobtainium or something.

I think the strength in Avatar's plot is whether or not you're into history. A lot of Americans seem to think the movie is directed against them (it is in some ways), but Avatar is very... historical. Relates to WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Cold War, Soviet Union in Afghanistan.... and pre-20th century. Not just wars, but ourselves to and how we relate to our own environment (not just global warming, but the fact that we are running out of resources).
"Yeah, we've heard this eco-friendly message over and over" -> yeah, except we're not listening.
Anyway, just a 2 cents. We can get these messages shoved up our faces, but we're not going to listen until we suffer the consequences.

I just saw it today and I'd say it was an above average action movie. The graphics are phenomenal, especially the environment of pandora. Although sometimes the na'vi look a little weird. The movie itself seemed too long to me and there wasn't anything memorable about the actual plot. Overall it was a fun movie to watch but there is nothing revolutionary about it

lol gotta agree with the above poster, just finished watching it
it was pretty average, the graphics were pretty amazing but still nothing that will blow you away for life

Was it that much better in 3D? I just saw it in 2D and it was decent.

Much better in 3d.
Since the mind blowing part about the movie is the world of pandora the 3d brings even more life to it.

Spielberg said after he screened Avatar on the Fox lot that the last time he felt this way after seeing a movie was when he saw Star Wars.
To all the young rebel filth out there - this time you've actually proved you're clueless. Avatar is recognized as an amazing, revolutionary movie by many worlds best producers and critics. Try to bite on some softer anus, this one is too tough for you.

I think people nitpick movies too easily.......
There are those that are gonna say, this movie copies other movies.......well check this out.
Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies and is rated #1 ON IMDB! That movie is copied a bit from the book The Count of Monte Cristo and the older movie version. So what? It was a great film!
Then there are those that say the movie is too unrealistic............the same people probably enjoyed Kill Bill Vol 1 and Vol 2 but I say that movie was way too unrealistic!
I think people need to just sit and enjoy a movie instead of sitting down trying to find faults.

AVATAR = Disney's Pocahontas. Stop comparing it to other things. Everything about it is a complete ripoff! Go watch Disney's Pocahontas right now!

Last Samurai is a similar plotline, but done way better than Pocahontas.
And Pocahontas was boring as crap because there wasn't a single thing imaginative about the setting. Now THAT was a completely derivative movie, right up to the point where it rips off real life. (Except it's the typically rose-colored lenses Disney-ized version where morals are black and white and happy endings are definitive.)
In fact, you take ANY movie where someone goes undercover and then ends up going native, and you have the same plotline. It's an archetypal plot structure. Sure, Avatar could have worked harder to work in some cool plot twists, mini-betrayals, back and forths etc, but I think James Cameron was more focused on creating scenes where he could show off his vision of the world. Sometimes, these directors have different goals.

I just had a thought ...
It's very cool that this movie is inspiring so many directors, and I genuinely enjoyed Avatar in 3D much more than I imagine I would without, but ... do you think with all these other 3D movies coming out, we're going to be getting in the habit of paying $5-$10 more (depending where you live) per movie? Not so much a complaint, it would just mean I wouldn't get popcorn.
