You have to love Katina to use her... by the time you can move her into a worthwhile mech she's so far behind. In my last OG2 playthrough I got her in Grungust3 and she was still worthless :/

Charlotte has more than double the number of pictures on Pixiv than Houki. Surely that's indicative of something. Plus it's not that difficult to be better than Houki in the first place, considering how poorly her character is written.

Well, vol 2 is Charlotte service vol so it is natural for her to just overtake everyone else, but now that it is back to a 'normal' harem situation you are seeing roughly the same amount of pics for every character, with Charlotte and Laura leading a little pace wise. So overall Charlotte is still kicking everyone's ass atm.
The author does this annoying thing where Charlotte will pretty much get the most time devoted to her but Houki has all the plot armors.

Charlotte and Tatenashi are both pretty appealing characters, and Laura isn't too bad as long as we ignore how the harem got started. So 3/6 characters with Rin being in sidekick status atm...
Honestly not really going to hold any of the 3 you listed against the author, I mean you can have all that and still have a decent plot. The problem is that the plot of IS is pretty bland as well, then you throw in how Tabane is essentially a plot device that favors Houko, then you destroy the one last possible way to enjoy the series as a pointless harem. So much like how I put up with F/SN for Saber, I am now putting up with IS for Charlotte and Tatenashi.

Tsunderes are very common in harems, yes, but that doesn't mean that they're all equal. Misaka, for instance, is far, far more likable than Houki.
IIRC, Rin and Cecelia were dead last in terms of heroines in the character polls.

On another note: Why characters in anime rarely act according to their age? The kid from Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket behaves like a 5 year-old even though he is supposed to be 11. The tag on AniDB is just too fitting: "painfully naive kid".
