Quite enjoyed Spy X Family so far. There are parts that don't make sense like how a top spy has seemingly no support system except some random guy who seems to run a newspaper stand and an assassin that seems to be employed directly by the government, yet is afraid that the same security service would deem her suspicious for not having a husband, but the anime is executed so well that it is hard to care.
Saw the first episode of Summertime Render. Seems good so far. Well animated, a supernatural mystery, smoothly done so far, though I am not a fan of the "white noise" that appears every now and then. I can see why some of us here have been wowed by the first episode. It's a bit of sarcasm and inside joke. What I really wanted to say was リア充, "riajuu", but not everyone knows what that means, so I just used the commonly translated term which is normies.
I personally don't see what people find so good about Spy X Family. It's like making James Bond a baby sitter and making it even more ridiculous. But well, I hate spy movies and cold war setting and find them bad in the first place. Only reason I'm still watching it is for Hayamin. It's fine if you enjoy it, but the story is definitely no LOGH.

I think there's nothing wrong with enjoying movies/series in the line of Kindergarten Cop. Just a lighthearted goofy comedy to brighten your mood and give you a chance to turn off your brain for a while and be entertained.
If you want to look a bit deeper into it I find it quite refreshing to see the juxtaposition of bright comedy with doom and gloom cold war setting (definitely not something I was expecting).

It's not like I don't enjoy lighthearted comedy. But even in the same season, Paripi Koumei does that a lot better with a ridiculous concept of putting Zhuge Liang being reincarnated in modern Japan and becoming a manager of a singer. Spy x Family is just not funny to me as a comedy and is outside my taste.

Lol, it's a self-deprecating joke. Search what riajuu means before getting offended. I guess some people don't have a sense of humour.
|
Well, there are some similarities between the 2 shows but they're rather superficial. Paripi Koumei does have the crazy premise of time-displaced person and most of the comedy there stems from it, other than that it's not that too far fetched. On the other hand Spy x Family is just fully embracing the absurd. They're both very different types of comedy (you can think of it like the difference between your standard comedy shows and what Monty Python did).

Honestly I'm far far less offended by calling Spy Family for normies than I am by that fact that anyone thinks Shikimori is good, let alone one of the better things on this season.

The term isn't applicable here because it's as if those who like Spy x Family aren't avid anime fans. And riajuu isn't accurate either. It's just a bad joke. Not about having a sense of humor or lack thereof.
Normies is basically saying something has wide appeal to reach non anime fans while lacking some of the more niche elements associated with Otaku. It isn't an outlandish claim that SxF fits that description and I doubt anyone has the data to suggest either way yet outside of it apparently being very popular in Japan. So imo your argument really falls off the rails here. He literally gave an opinion and you jumped down his throat for it.
You could call a ton of very popular shows for normies. Pretty much a large chunk of the big Shonen or Studio Ghibli stuff can be thrown under that umbrella.

Pretty much a large chunk of the big Shonen or Studio Ghibli stuff can be thrown under that umbrella. While I partially got what he meant, perhaps it would've been better to use "mainstream" to refer to the audience to make sure more posters got the reference at the risk of losing the planned joke? Dunno, just a thought.
Anyways, it's true that Spy x Family is more oriented towards the mainstream audience. There are many times that things happened that are completely bizarre but neither character questions how or why it happened. An example from several episodes including latest: + Show Spoiler +Loid actually escaping from his "patients" who are shooting at him while Yor was with him in the van back in episode 2 and she's apparently so naive that she believed his story, or the many crazy antics such as the jumps when they caught the thief, the cow scene with Yor or latest episode, Yor actually going toe-to-toe then imo, overpowering Loid while drunk. He even exclaims how she's strong too, but we never get a follow-up thought from him about why that's odd. .
That said, it's a pretty fun anime to watch imo, so more power to those who find it as enjoyable as I do.

If you want context on why I made that comment, I saw some comments on Spy X Family in other forums along the lines of "I watch it with my 9 year old kid which makes it the best anime ever." So yes, I meant riajuu as people having family and kids, as I can never understand that kind of fun as a single person. If you find that derogatory, that's on you for not understanding what the term means.
More specifically, I thought more of なんかこのアニメリア充向きじゃない?, but no one here would get that so I put it in English.

I'm honestly just watching it because everything I've heard from people who read the manga is that the show does actually get better. I'm just waiting and waiting forever lol

I do find it quite enjoyable. Also, if you embrace the absurd enough some of the things you mentioned actually make sense within the story/world they created:
+ Show Spoiler + Regarding the "patients" scenes - Yor has been established as socially awkward and completely oblivious as to what constitutes "normal" in this world, thus she might actually believe this story (she may also immediately see through it but still go with the flow as to achieve her goal, but I think the first explanation fits the setting better). The cow scene, drunken fight etc. - Yor already mentioned to Loid previously that she's an expert in self-defense, which she demonstrated and Loid is in a bit of a similar boat as she is: he knows a lot because of his career as a spy but at the same time remains oblivious to some things considered "normal" by others and since most of his life was spent around highly trained people he might just accept it as his constant reality and not give it any more thought.

Spy x Family tries to be cute and funny, and it's decent at both. It very obviously doesn't take itself seriously. The show's enjoyable enough, but I'd say my main gripe is that it's overly safe. The presentation's competent and all, but there's nothing really wows me in the delivery.
In contrast... + Show Spoiler [Kaguya s3] +Why's the first ED a reference to the Starship Troopers Klendathu drop? Because somebody wanted to and it's an ED so anything goes. Why'd they change the ED for ep 5 to a completely different song complete with dance number? Dunno, but it's cool. They consistently add little touches throughout the show to keep things interesting, or to accent the comedy with visual gags. I really appreciate the extra effort they put in.

Eh, that's reaching. There's quite a few things that don't really make logical sense, but it's not that kind of story. Trying to justify things that are meant to be handwaved is kinda pointless, as the inconsistencies tend to just pile up over time.

It's fun to see the different faces the characters make. If you don't like it now, you won't like it later.
The Mobseka anime for example is really ugly compared to the LN.

By the way, do you guys have any recommendations for anime (stand alone movies or series) where characters are not highschool-aged and more on the adult side?
There's way too many tv shows and movies for me to sift through to find something so I'd definitely appreciate some recommendations. Doesn't have to be latest stuff. And yes, I've seen all the classics like GITS, Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon etc.

Psycho Pass Season 1 Great_Teacher_Onizuka (He is a highschool teacher though) Welcome to the NHK Usagi Drop
Pfew, harder to find than I expected

NHK might be interesting (pity I can't find any version that's better than 480p), Usagi Drop not my cup of tea, seen the others
And yes, it's kinda hard to find such animes, sadly...
I guess I'll try watching Death Parade and Koroshi Ai for now, with Break Blade and ROD as backups.

Here would be my suggestions: Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Fate/Zero Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei Hachimitsu to Clover Baccano! Texhnolyze Ookami to Koushinryou Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita Ergo Proxy Barakamon Gankutsuou Monster Kakushigoto Golden Kamuy
There's actually quite a bit of it if you know where to look.
