If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

Danmachi is not even an isekai, but just standard fantasy.

I've read a lot of isekai novels and among those that got an anime adaptation, the only one I liked is Mushoku Tensei for its world building and character development. Story is kind of meh, but the setting is interesting enough to keep things interesting. I like the Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu novels too, but the anime is rather low budget and rushed. Shield hero has ok novels, but the anime is shit. Re:zero novel has a decent story, but the writer just can't write; the anime is actually rather well executed and managed to make it interesting. If you don't like the main character, I doubt you'll enjoy it even if you keep watching more. Slime Tensei started out decent enough, but the power scaling of MC just tends to kill any kind of tension in the story later on.

Maybe you can try Otome Game Sekai wa Mob ni Kibishii Sekai desu. I personally can't withstand the art, but it does have a decent story if you can look past it.

Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari for an oldie if you like the Tenchi Universe.

Unfortunately, a lot of isekai has really poor writing. Even Overlord started out as interesting, but they just keep reusing the same jokes and plot points, and it gets old fast. Kuro no Maou is probably my favorite isekai novel that I actually like for its writing, but no anime adaptation yet.

Edit: Forgot about Eien no Aselia, it's not a novel, but a game with Isekai done correctly where the MC actually has to learn the language with rather deep lore if you are interested.

Log Horizon
Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken
No Game No Life (only 12 eps though)
Mushoku Tensei

Yea, I've seen those. Definitly better ones.
- Last season of Mushoku Tensei really boosted the series, first one I was really close to quitting. Some sick stuff...
-No game no life, so sad it didnt get any follow up, it was great.
- Log Horizon is lacking honestly, and slime is decent.

I think the only appropriate answer that comes to my mind is ReZero, but I definitely agree with above. Isekai is a hard genre to get good actual writing. Maybe Executioner and Her Way of Life would be for you as well. Its...kind of Isekai?

Re:zero I've seen. Better chars, but eventually lacking in main char and some story parts seem off. Idk, dropped it in middle him facing a witch in some other dimention. Does it get better?
Havent seen Executioner, but it only has 6.8 score so far, which is below what I usually watch. I might have a look. Is it really worth it? Thanks though

Reason i like Overlord is it has a different depth in the story, so much yet to be seen, and this underlying "training of chars" is interesting take. Also has some of my all time favorite chars, like Sebas.

Escaflowne is great aswell. Older though.

Escaflowne is amazing.

I remember recently I've seen some interesting isekais but can't recall their titles right now. One was about a bunch of people showing up in a fantasy world with their memories wiped and they go at it from the ground up, barely scraping it, losing to a single goblin etc. Was quite interesting in that your main characters aren't OP from the get go and have to really grind their way up with a lot of problems uncommon for an isekai (like not being able to afford food or clothes while also being fully grown people with no special powers, skills or knowledge of the world - they're exactly who they were before being isekaied). Now it's coming back to me, it was Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash.
There were also some reverse-isekais that were kinda funny, like Devil is a Part Timer.

Re: Zero is kinda good but the MC there is absolutely obnoxious and insufferable which brings down the enjoyment of the show pretty hard.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

I cannot believe its real

Finally caught up with 86 part 2. Damn, it's an amazing show, and a great example of a perfect adaptation. I'm amazed that they adapted volume 1 in an entire cour and vol 2 and 3 in the second cour. Most LN adaptations end up being rushed and end up as a commercial for the LN, but this is one of the few exceptions. I currently have all 11 volumes of the novel and currently halfway through vol. 4. I'll probably finish reading all of it by the end of the year.

On another note, I've been watching Initial D as well. It's a fun show seeing the 86 drift and beat the faster cars lol. Is the name of the district a coincidence or is it based on the Trueno?

On another news Mahoyoru gets voice acting with Hanakana as Alice:

IMO the volume 5-6 Arc and the Volume 8 Arc are the best two in the series. I'm currently on the 10th LN myself, and eagerly await the announcement of an English release of Volume 11 given that Volume 10 is just a short story collection about Shin. Completely agree, the adaptation was so spot on it moved me despite having 100% knowledge of what would happen.

That means I have something to look forward to then when I get to Vol 5.

Watched Evangelion Rebuild 4th movie. I almost forgot this existed as it's been too long since it was continued.
+ Show Spoiler +
The visuals were nice, but that was pretty much all it had for it like one of those empty Hollywood movies. Anno pretty much forgot about the story and I was forced to watch him masturbate towards his own wife(Mari) for 2 hours lol.

I started watching Higurashi Kai recently to try and get an idea of the story: + Show Spoiler +
seems like the first arc is an anime-only, but I think it's pretty decent. I'm not really sure what the revelation will be once I start the answer arc, but the current discussed storyline is that the three families were engineering (more like reviving) an old pathogen (spewed from the swamp) to make it more potent and thereby revive the worship of Oyashiro-sama since it stabilized with time. Rika, being some time traveler (with a sidekick? lol), is repeating the events of June 1983 to try and get a different timeline where she can save her friends and herself. Then there is also the gas explosion, which imo, was not an actual thing, but not much details on what took place, aka what is being hidden.

I'm excited to find out more details, but man, it must feel terrible for Rena in the first episode of Kai where she is recounting the events. Imagine going to a hospital and coming back to hear that all your friends died the next day. Likewise, must be terrible for Rika to watch events unfold over and over in the hope that something will change, but nothing does. I do wonder what would've happened if she made an off-comment to tomitake not to enter the shrine but I wonder if that will trigger a certain event that she is avoiding (which is why she didn't tell Satoko about her eventual death (just leaked it)).

Of course, there is also many questions regarding Dr. Irie's death, who Takano really is etc...

I'm not sure if Kai will answer all my questions, but if I can get an answer to most, that'd be great. I, of course, do wonder why someone believe that the mystery of Higurashi can't be solved seeing as the current theory isn't that far-out there, all things considered. But I also realize that I'm still scratching the surface so answer arc(s) here I come!

I don't get it, other than CGI smoke effects, there's no animation? Is it an anime of just voice acted panels?

I think it's literally just starting lol. That was a concern of mine as well. No animation. So we'll have to wait for next year and the following trailers.

Honestly I think it was bold of Classroom of the Elite to just go back in like the show was on 5 months ago, not 5 years ago. I watched the show last year and I still spent half the episode just trying to remember each characters name/deal, let alone thinking about the rules of the new game.

Then I went to the wiki to check some stuff and got blatantly spoiled because it has very a bad hide spoiler function

Rookie mistake. Haha

I've watched the episode 2x now to try and wrap my head around it. I know the main characters but not all of the sides. The new exam shouldn't be that hard but we'll see how it goes. MC said he had a few different paths, so it could get interesting.

I definitely think they should have bare minimum done a flashback when they're sitting at the table and the evil dude from the island arc shows up. Like even something quick when he asks how she did it, just anything that would make me go "oh yeah here are the details". They know they have 24-26 episodes to tell the rest of the LN story, so they didn't have to go so hard so fast.

Honestly kinda wild to me that the first episode has such a high rating on MAL. Clearly not based on the episode itself

Do people really pay attention to ratings on MAL, especially for the first episode? I mean I suppose they must and you, chipmonkey obviously you does otherwise wouldn't had mentioned it. Then again I supposed I would had missed the two most oustanding anime of this season if not for zerocool's recommendations, so perhaps there is something to paying attention to ratings, rather than just randomly picking whatever catches my eye.

I wouldn't trust MAL ratings blindly, but also doesn't hurt to see what the community thinks of a show. I personally prefer to watch several episodes before deciding if I want to continue watching a show or not so the rating doesn't matter to me.

As for classroom of the elite, I watched half of the first season and haven't gone back to watch the rest. Now might be as good of a time as any to do so!

I definitely don't go by the MAL rating myself, I've just looked at the ratings of all of the shows I've already watched the premiers of just to see how my thoughts line up with the masses. Starting last season, I've picked through the list based on names/posters when Crunchyroll revealed their seasonal lineup, then I watched the Anime News Network seasonal trailer watch party and make notes of everything I want to watch that wasn't on my initial list. Then go from there.

The process hasn't let me down yet, led me to 17 shows last season and 13 this season.

The only point I was making was that the first episode of Season 2 was a really really shitty episode to be the first episode of a new season of a show that finished airing 5 years ago. It wasn't bad per say, just bad in the context of what a first episode should do. I contrast that to a show like The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting, which had by far the best first episode of anything I've seen this season thus far. Gives a great initial look at important characters and the dynamics between them, with enough humor and heart to (presumably) show how a watcher should expect the tone of the show to look for the season.

It looks like I like Utawarerumono: Futari no Hakuoro more than I thought I did. I remember playing through the game, and finding the plot a mess due to focusing on the RPG aspects of the game. Still, I enjoyed watching the first few episodes of the anime, and reminiscing on the characters. It reminded me how good the music of the game was. They skipped the Kuon scenes, so it's hard to see how they will go from here. It will be nice if they skip all the bullshit repetitive battles added for the sake of padding the game, but skipping the main heroine's scenes is not good. We'll see how they handle it from here. It will probably get worst from here as the best part of the game was really just the beginning.
