On December 12 2018 11:08 BigFan wrote: Serious question regarding SAO: + Show Spoiler +
It seems like in most arcs, something that's sexually despicable goes on. SAO was the only one (ignoring smaller arcs) that didn't have any if I remember correctly, but ALO had it at the end with Asuna and that creep. GGO had bits of it with the friend being obsessed over Shinon or whatever her name was, and this latest alice adaption just had another one. I realize that it's quite easy to paint a bad person as one if you go this route, but did the author of SAO really need to do so that many times? Does he have some weird fetish towards this stuff or something? Surely he could show the cruelty of the world and the Taboo Index without resorting to such methods of storytelling? Am I missing something here?
On that note, anyone else find it weird that even though they are in this makeshift world, they are also bound by the system despite the Taboo Index being something that the characters of this world created? Granted, the world might be trying to protect all inhabitants indiscriminately regardless of the Index, and it's likely that's what going on and less so of a connection, but I just thought it was both interesting and odd.
The easy answer is because it generates reactions. Sure it's an easy criticism to make that it gets used too often (2.5 times in 5 arcs since the Sinon thing was different he was clearly about to murder her not rape her) but it does do the job of generating tension in the scene.
It doesn't really bother me much, I see a lot of repeated themes and story elements in a lot of anime, SAO isn't different that way.
^ ya, I realize those points, but it still feels excessive to me. It's honestly not needed, and I'm pretty sure he could've made sure to show the bad side of whatever he wanted through other methods.

People pay attention to what generates hype and or controversy, just look at the first episode of Goblin Slayer.
However you feel about it, it worked, people that wouldn't be paying attention to season 3, now are, and that scene has a lot to do with it.
Personally, I feel like the pacing of season 3 is a HUGE overreaction to the justified pacing concerns of the first two arcs, I can't see how anyone that isn't already a fan of the series would be enjoying it, but that scene was big in generating enough conversation that it got people paying attention again.
I think i'll probably watch Asobi Asobase, Hinamatsuri or Net-juu no Susume(i probably can't watch them all as i brought work home for the holidays and i have alot of other stuff to do). Thanks everybdoy! Any other recommendations are welcome.

Any decent SoL/comedy/romance in the past few seasons(yyears?)? I wanna watch something relaxing/fun.
i would recommend:
Grand Blue (hilarious, relaxing) ReLIFE (but you have to make sure to watch the additional episodes - 14-17) Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou (if you like some harem/ecchi/fantasy aspects as well)
I can no longer enjoy stuff like Monster Musume for some reason. Read the Grand Blue manga. And ReLIFE seems pretty serious to me.

Off the top of my head: Takagi-san, Hinamatsuri, Little witch academia, Asobi Asobase, Cells at work, Net-juu no Susume and Gamers!
Takagi-san and Hinamatsuri in particular.
Seen Gamers, Read Takagi-San
Little witch academia has too much fantastical elements for me (considering i'm just looking for SoL simulators)
Think Cells at work are the clips that my friend showed about really cute rendition of platelets lol

Have you seen Hinamatsuri? It's one of the best comedy/SoL made (adapted from manga) recently.
I've seen a clip of this. Seems pretty funny and my friends kept recommending me this.

Try Seven Deadly Sins. I've found it fun and lighthearted enough.
Best Anime for 2018 Hanebado! - A delicate psychological drama hiding behind the "Sports" and "Seinen" tags. Ayano is probably the most well written character I've seen in a long while, how she handles and "deal" with her mental issues is way to relatable. The way the two MCs have each their own parallel story mingled together works perfectly.
Most Surprising of 2018 Hanebado! - Initially I thought it was just a standard sports anime that I gave a shot because I love badminton, oh boy was I in for a treat.
Stockholm Syndrome Award for 2018 Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai - Had to see if he actually did it...
Best Anime Season of 2018 Whatever season Hanebado! was in. - The show is the best I've seen since Orange.
Most Disappointing of 2018 The last episodes of Darling in the Franxx. - "Ha! We got this weapon!", "Haha! We have the counter", "Hahaha! We have this counter".... Please, it felt like kindergardeners wrote the ending. Gave up on the show.
Guilty Pleasure Zombieland Saga - I was sold after the rap.
'Elem Award' for Most Overrated Anime of 2018 Goblin Slayer - It's a pure steaming pile of shitty exploitation fiction.
Best Scene of 2018 Ayano bully smashing Connie. - The animation is beautiful. This is Ayano basically saying "you are trash" and "fuck your family".
Best OP of 2018 Hanebado! - Still get me hyped. So much energy.
Best ED of 2018 Asobi Asobase - I died laughing the first time I heard it.
Best Female Characters of 2018 1) Ayano Hasaki - I could write essays about how well designed and written she is... 2) Hina - Too smol, adorable... Oh and lethal. 3) Yuu (bloom into you) - Honestly I dont know why, but she was the first I thought of after the two above. I suppose it's her refreshingly new personality of a MC.
Best Male Characters of 2018 1) Nitta - Come on. It's Nitta.... 2) Manager dude in Zombieland Saga - Mamoru Miyano having the time of his life. 3) Everyone in PAB. - Because they remind me way too much of my college days.
Worst Male Characters of 2018 Kentarou Tachibana - As a former youth badminton coach his incompetence piss me off.
Worst Female Characters of 2018 Uchika Hanesaki - because fuck that woman.
Best Scum of 2018 Iori Kitahara - Not all scums are born with the true sight of a pure degenerate.
Worst Scum of 2018 Uchika Hanesaki - because fuck that woman.
Best Female Voice Actor of 2018 Miyuri Shimabukuro - She managed to make Nagisa more than just a generic shounen protagonist.
Best Male Voice Actor of 2018 Mamoru Miyano - Do I really need to explain this one?
Totally not biased towards Hanebado! EDIT: Updated with reasonings.
Best of 2018: Yurucamp - It was fluffy, had good direction, and had a lot of cute moments.
Most Disappointing of 2018: Overlord EP 12. - I want to erase my memory of ever having seen or heard of thsi season for ruining my favorite moment from the book.
Best Season: Winter - Lots of quality stuff.
Best Mecha: Gridman - Meta done right.
Most Moechara: Platelets - I don't need to explain this.
Worst Adaptation: Grand Blue - Most of the jokes seem to fall flat in anime form. Dumbest Name: Banana Fish - What a stupid fucking name
Worst Writing From An Author That Typically Writes Great Stuff: Planet With - Where is biscuit hammer anime you son of a bitch
Most Dumb Idea: Megalo Box - Why?
Best Episode 1 That You Could Watch Instead of Watching The Entire Season: Violet Evergarden - You can literally just watch Episode 1 and thats all you need. Best episode 1 since Ga Rei Zero.
Worst Yuri Series of All Time: Citrus - FUCK citrus it's so garbage I wish they would animate actual good Yuri instead of all the fucking crap we get.
Adaptation That Was Most Surprisingly Good: Koi Wa Ameagari no You ni - I expected this to suck but it captured the atmosphere of the manga really well.
Adaptation That Was Just As Shit As Expected: Grancrest Senki and Death March tie. Best Surprise: Mo Dao Zu Shi - Gay Xianxia was AOTY of my heart, first actual good quality chinese anime I've seen. Most Wait That Actually Aired This Year?: Toaru Majutsu 3 - I didn't even know this aired until I made this list.
Best Anime for 2018 Yuru Camp - I love a good iyashikei, and it's been a long time since there's been a standout. The OVA sucked pretty badly though. Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan - Runner up. Solid fanservice basically. It's the closest to F/HA we'll ever get. I'm looking forward to Case Files...
Best Thing That Nobody Watched of 2018 Lupin III: Part V - Nobody watches Lupin but it's consistently excellent.
Most Surprising of 2018 Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho - I thought this show was going to be one of those mediocre, poorly written tearjerker dramas. Turns out the writing was actually competent. + Show Spoiler +
I said this when the show originally aired, but their take on bullying was very refreshing. No forgiveness needed - just make it clear you haven't forgotten and cut them out of your life entirely.
I thought for sure they were going to get stuck in the snowstorm scenario with the girls for the sake of adding in some action/drama. Thankfully, they didn't.
The email scene was really impressive. Shirase blatantly sends these emails in a bunch of episodes, but it's not particularly notable because it's a simple metaphor for her inability to move on. The way they brought it back makes perfect sense, but is also unexpected and most importantly, meaningful.
A very solid show.
Stockholm Syndrome Award for 2018 Golden Kamuy - The art became noticeably worse in s2, and they started skipping a fair amount of material. And despite that, the story and characters are still compelling. It's a real testament to the quality of the source.
Best Anime Season of 2018 Winter. The Yuru Camp/Sora Yori combo was pretty good.
Worst Anime Season of 2018 Fall was a massacre.
Most Disappointing of 2018 Garo: Vanishing Line - Honoo no Kokuin was a flash in the pan and will never be replicated. Gundam Build Divers - Build Fighters s1 was a flash in the pan and will never be replicated. Episode 0 ended up having the best fight of the show. That's depressing.
Guilty Pleasure Full Metal Panic - I basically watched this for completion purposes. I don't think the other series will ever be topped. + Show Spoiler [Also] +
You knew exactly what this would be, Sent.
'Elem Award' for Most Overrated Anime of 2018 Violet Evergarden for sure. For an award winning book, it sure was poorly constructed. + Show Spoiler +
The world tries to take itself seriously, but the level of technology is both super advanced and hopelessly backwards. It's inconsistent in a way that just feels wrong. But a lot of shows do that, so whatever.
The show totally lost me when Violet became a highly-respected typist offscreen. Like... that's probably something you should show and build up to, otherwise it's just an asspull.
By far the worst offense is all of the war stuff. Why was it necessary for Violet, who was a little girl, to be a fucking supersoldier? Was it to make her more badass? Was it an excuse to have action scenes? My cynical assumption is that the author thought it'd be cool.
As for nitpicky complaints, it annoyed me to no end every time Violet took off her gloves to the exaggerated gasps of all present. A little subtlety goes a long way...
Gridman's the runner up. The fights were good but a lot of the characters suck. + Show Spoiler +
Yuuta's the typical boring MC with no personality.
Utsumi is infuriating. What a prick. The episode (ep 10 or 11?) where he told off Anti for wanting to help is just baffling. It's hilariously self-righteous. What gives him the right to speak on behalf of everyone? Hell, what did Utsumi even do in the show? He could've been removed entirely and nothing would've changed. They even lampshaded how useless he was in the final episode.
Rikka was the only decent person in the entire cast. She's the best character by default.
Anti had an actual character arc, but it was telegraphed from the start. Watching it unfold wasn't particularly satisfying.
Akane is just a terrible person. Part of me wonders how well received her character would be if she weren't a cute girl.
In general, it just felt like there was a lot of stuff in the show that was meaningless for anyone unfamiliar with toku stuff. For instance, Alexis was kinda pointless from a plot perspective, but he's apparently a reference to the live action? Gridman's powers (like suddenly using a repair beam) have similar problems.
The sci-fi themes explored were interesting, but I think they did a pretty bad job of explaining everything.
Best Scene of 2018 Sora Yori emails The finale of Lupin was also excellent but nobody watches Lupin. + Show Spoiler [Also this] +
Best OP of 2018 Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan
Catchy song. Simple visuals, but it's nicely synced. The part where everyone comes in is really good.
Good song. Fitting lyrics. The visual style is nice but it's repetitive.
I'm still waiting for more duets. You'd think there'd be more with how many romance/romcom anime there are. Even the joke duets tend to be good.
Best Female Characters of 2018 Asirpa from Golden Kamuy - She does double duty as Ainu cultural expert and Sugimoto's morality pet. Anzu from Hinamatsuri - What a good girl. Kokoro from Franxx - Her characterization got crapped on in the latter half of the show when the plot fell apart, but for those first 12 episodes, she was excellent. She wasn't perfect, she had dreams, she actually made moves to progress... The buildup of her relationship was the highlight of the show. The rest I try to forget.
Best Male Characters of 2018 Hijikata from Golden Kamuy - Just a great character and a badass to boot. He's a major schemer and a big part of why the shifting alliances part of the plot actually works. Foreman Otsuki from Chukan Kanriroku Tonegawa - Kaiji is the everyman in Kaiji. Otsuki is the everyman in Tonegawa. And all this from a guy who is canonically utter scum. + Show Spoiler +
Worst Male Characters of 2018 Ainz from Overlord - The clueless gag was funny in s1. It's significantly less funny two whole seasons later. Sasuga Ainz-sama. Whatever that guy's name is from Hanebado - Why did they waste so much time on this guy and his pointless romance in a show about girls badminton? Nobody cares.
Worst Female Characters of 2018 Hina from Hinamatsuri - What a jerk. Gimme more time with side characters.
I really did not watch a lot of anime this year. This is highly limited to what I watched (duh), but samplesize so much smaller than usual
Best Anime for 2018 Yuru-Camp, Overlord s3 or Shokugeki no Souma s3 for me. Heck might even be Wotakoi despite how much I disliked the main girl as well as my opinion that Sugita just doesn't fit the character he's voicing because aside of those 2 things I genuinly liked the show. Yuru-camp is pretty straight forward just good. Overlord s3 and Shokugeki so Souma s3 are just continuations of shows I really liked and I already mentioned that I don't really have an issue with the s3 arc in Souma for example so it was hype as fuck for me.
Slime-isekai would probably be my #1 if asked in 3 months though.
Best Thing That Nobody Watched of 2018 idk, i only watched the popular shows this year around
Most Surprising of 2018 this probably has to be hataraku saibou for me
Stockholm Syndrome Award for 2018 Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto dakedo Imouto ja Nai Although, same as every year: Just what is stockholm syndrome. In this case i got away from the anime and dropped it but I watched on far longer than I thought i would to experience the disaster. More a "Burning car on the roadside that you just can't look away from" award I guess
Best Anime Season of 2018 None, they were all equally shit.
Worst Anime Season of 2018 None, they were all equally shit.
Most Disappointing of 2018 Darling in the Franxx. I really liked the first cour but then it turned into shit
Guilty Pleasure Darling in the Franxx (+ the Manga)
'Elem Award' for Most Overrated Anime of 2018 Violet Evergarden or Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl-senpai no Yume wo Minai
I've talked before about how I just don't think the dialogue in bunny girl is anything to write home about, nor the characters themselves. It's a show with lots of dialogue but that doesn't mean it has to be good dialogue. Don't feel like rephrasing all that though
Best Scene of 2018 Probably Slime-isekai. When slime and masked girl had a talk on that grassy hill, she talked about her past and how she lived through the air-raids of ww2 Japan and then being summoned into the other world and slime then uses his powers to show her how Japan turned out after that. Really well done and touching moment.
Best OP of 2018 Yuru Camp OP or Wotakoi OP. Since Ragz already linked Wotakoi I'm going with Yuru camp:
Best ED of 2018 I liked the Darling in the Franxx ED quite a lot:
Best Female Characters of 2018 Alice from Shokugeki no Souma?
Best Male Characters of 2018 The mob-character who tossed the PC of slime into the bathtub to ruin his HDD/SSD
Worst Male Characters of 2018 Goro from Darling in the Franxx. Ichigo deserved MC
Worst Female Characters of 2018 The red Bloodcell in Hataraku Saibou. As cute as the show was the red bloodcell was just too annoying. Both from a voice pov as well as her just being the same every single episode
Best Female Voice Actor of 2018 can't think of any outstanding scenes this year. So probably just the girl voicing Albedo in Overlord (Yumi Hara) for me because I think she's doing a really good job with that. Generally speaking.
Best Male Voice Actor of 2018 Matsuoka Yoshitsugu as Souma in Shokugeki no Souma s3. I've mentioned that I do like the guy a lot but I generally don't like his "normal" roles a lot. Think of Kirito in SAO etc. But Souma just fits the guy 100% and you can tell that he's having fun while recording it.
