Serious question regarding SAO: + Show Spoiler +It seems like in most arcs, something that's sexually despicable goes on. SAO was the only one (ignoring smaller arcs) that didn't have any if I remember correctly, but ALO had it at the end with Asuna and that creep. GGO had bits of it with the friend being obsessed over Shinon or whatever her name was, and this latest alice adaption just had another one. I realize that it's quite easy to paint a bad person as one if you go this route, but did the author of SAO really need to do so that many times? Does he have some weird fetish towards this stuff or something? Surely he could show the cruelty of the world and the Taboo Index without resorting to such methods of storytelling? Am I missing something here?
On that note, anyone else find it weird that even though they are in this makeshift world, they are also bound by the system despite the Taboo Index being something that the characters of this world created? Granted, the world might be trying to protect all inhabitants indiscriminately regardless of the Index, and it's likely that's what going on and less so of a connection, but I just thought it was both interesting and odd.

The original SAO arc had a Kirito-Asuna sex scene thats fairly infamous that got cut from the anime.
The short answer is that SAO is a LN for horny otaku teenagers, so the author gives horny otaku teenagers what they want
The Taboo Index question is answered eventually, although I don't think its a good answer.

The SAO LN did not have a sex scene in it. The author wrote his own personal fan fic sex scene that got made public.

No, it was part of the Web version, which was the original version of SAO. Don't drink the SAO koolaid of the author himself doing "fan fiction" of his own thing

They did do it, you can tell from the way LN AND anime both allude to it, but the actual sex scene was not in the original and was its own thing the author posted later in a different section of the site.
I don't know why them having consensual sex would be "garbage" though. It really isn't the same thing as the two incidents he brought up (which were weird and over the top). Dunno what happened in Ali though since I am not watching or reading that arc as I really only care about Progressive.

If you guys are talking about the s1 date, I think it was fine the way it was but an explicit sex scene wouldn't have been terrible, either. SAO (the show) has far more offending stuff to offer.

I was talking about the concept of a scene being there, not the scene quality itself lol. Are purposefully misunderstanding.
Apparently you have read more of it then I have, I just know it is supposed be to somehow worse then Nasu's sex scene writing.

I'm not sure how an non-adult anime would have a sex scene anyways. Anyways this SAO episode seems to make no sense. So there are loads of laws in this fantasy world that no one can break, like the no killing of other humans, but apparently property damage and rape isn't one of them. Not only does noble power and authority is a real enforced law of nature, everybody basically act like it doesn't exist and act like you would culturally in the real world, until that same power and authority is used.

keep in mind that those people in there are all AI NPCs. So having laws evolve that don't make sense isn't really too far out there.
Same with innitial set of rules (taboo index) being very limited. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if he took some RL news he read about AI as inspiration for a lot of it.

Turn off your brain while watching SAO. It's not an anime you meant to think too much about. It's one of those you turn off and enjoy the spectacle.

To be fair to the actual novels, its explained away by mental gymnastics. I don't remember the specifics, but Kirito had assumed his flowers would be safe because property damage is taboo, but the dudes were able to get around it due it being in a common area or something? IDK, its been a while. The rape thing had similar bullshittery to explain it as well. Lots of things in this arc are "explained", but whether or not the explanation is a good one is a whole different matter

It's an internally inconsistent explanation. If mental gymnastics are all that is needed to defy the taboo index then everyone would be able to use these mental gymnastics and people would be constantly murdering and raping each other using those mental gymnastics, as opposed to acting like those mental gymnastics don't exist, unless it happened that those two characters happened to be the only 2 people in the entire world of a thousand year history to have mental gymnastics. It's all played as some deep emotional scene and a major plot point, which just makes the internal inconsistency so glaring.

You're right, maybe garbage wasn't the right word, but for starters, I don't trust them to do the scene well. But for me, I watched SAO for the adventure and stuck in another world portion, not to see Kirito having sex with Asuna lol. I admit that I do like it when they have their cute moments, much the same way I like it in other romcoms, but that's my limit when it comes to that. I can tell you what happened in Ali, but watching the latest episode will give you the gist of it.

yeah, if anything having an anime that tells you or shows you that a couple had sex is a good thing for me personally. The usual "they're holding hands and maybe kissing and that's it" approach is just too stupid and I don't know why telling someone "guys, they've been a couple for months now. Of course they'd have sex at some point" is so outrageous.
Like Slaughter said earlier, I don't think the problem comes from including scenes like that but about it being poorly written fanservice for the sake of fanservice rather than a scene that feels natural.
But that boils down to it being a bad author/writer or whatever and not so much on such scenes being no-go by default. Although I do understanding the feeling if that's just the vast majority of such scenes in anime.
So TL;DR: I haven't read the SAO sex-scene myself. If it's well written it's probably really good and should be something that happens more often, if not it's probably really cringe. Duh

No its probably worse then even Fate sex scenes. There is a reason why the author posted it in a different section of his website and it was not included in any form of SAO.
