On October 02 2018 11:17 BigFan wrote: Hanebado had a imo bad ending. + Show Spoiler + Like, much of what you mentioned in a previous post was right. The mother not realizing how her actions were stupid, and thinking she did what was best for her daughter or the daughter snapping out of it at the end somehow. She clearly needed a psychiatrist for much of the anime and instead, they left her be. It was stupid and so were the mother's actions! I also wasn't a fan of the hard work beats talent angle here. While I typically like it, it felt too forced here, like the show just had to show the loss, even though we all know that's preposterous. That's not to say that a bad mindset won't affect your game, it was just overblown big time here and so was the turnaround. What I liked the least was how they took the two MCs parallel stories and bruteforced them together in the end without any regards to what it actually implies. They managed to have almost an entire season written with a unique dual MC with individual storylines and then just ruin it. > ![]() + Show Spoiler + Ayano told the story of a deeply traumatized child and how left untreated it can develop into a mental disorder. The invisible pain a person suffering from a disorder carry and how good we are at hiding it. Her having a separate story was clear from the first few episodes with how she obviously was trying to hide behind her naive and childish mannerism. "Her show" was elegantly, subtly and almost delicately written and handled. Nagisa on the other hand told a fairly generic sports anime story and the standard "value of hardwork", importance of teamwork and reflection. You could easily make two separate anime with each as the sole MC. Nagisa would be a standard sports anime while Ayano would be a psychological drama. In their parallel stories their respective themes are just a subplot for each other in their story. It's partly why I love the show so much, it's an elegant way to tell multiple stories at once. They were both written so realistic in their individual theme and then bruteforced mesh just throws the primary MCs story all away for the sake of a happy and generic ending. Come on, it was listed as a seinen would it have hurt to have a more neutral end? Having Nagisa beat Ayano in the final episode was so stupid. Ayano was falling deeper and deeper into her disorder and ultimately had a complete mental breakdown during the match. Being in such state of mind is both mentally and physically taxing. This makes Nagisa's victory pointless, Ayano might as well have been playing with a broken leg. Nagisa being so happy about it was a nice touch as it once again showed how easy it is for surroundings to not notice how badly hurt a person can be on the inside, but this again takes away from Nagisa's almost shounen-like sports anime MC. They had a show that managed to realistic and gentle tell a story about a very sensitive subject and by their dual MC setup have a separate sports anime within it too and then just... Uuuuuugh.

Japan basically now has 2 world class chamions who utterly crush other world class champions, who both happened to play in the same school and seemingly only played against each other once, when one of them wasn't even trying. Everybody is a jerk to each other, including a mother who abondoned her child for no reason, with no real explanation but everybody forgives each other for everything anyways. Oh well, at least we got some very well done badminton animation out of it, with great sound and movement, that blows other sports anime out of the water. Also: curving shuttlecock shots. Haha wtf.

Oh well, at least we got some very well done badminton animation out of it, with great sound and movement, that blows other sports anime out of the water. Also: curving shuttlecock shots. Haha wtf. Well, technically you can do a curving shot, but it's either banned (Sidek Serve) or completely shit since the shuttle's line of flight will make it sloooow and usually barely make it over the net before the curving stops aka you basically hit it wrong. I never saw anyone doing it intentional, I cant actually even remember anyone doing such a fuck up outside of for fun spars where we just fucked around, after I moved to just the masters grade. ![]() + Show Spoiler + I dont think Nagisa is world class, nothing in the anime really seemed to suggest she was anything other than a solid high-school level player. She barely could beat Ayano in episode 1 despite Ayano didn't touch a racket for 6 months, I dont care how much of a slump you're in if you're a massive talent you should and would destroy anyone that out of form. Personally, as I mentioned in my last post, I'm convinced the result of their final match is entirely due to Ayano being in a horrible state which makes Nagisa's victory bittersweet at best since she managed to just barely defeat her very sick nemesis, "yay". At least that's the only reason the result would make sense in my eyes, so I consider it canon. ![]() The characters acting as jerks to eachother is one of the things I really like. Ayano is trying to protect her broken heart/mind from what she fears the most, being hurt and abandoned by others if she have already pushed them away they cannot leave or hurt her. It's a fairly common behavior, she pushes away what she actually want; she enjoyed playing and liked Serigaya, she wants to be closer to her sister, she wants a good relationship with her teammates etc etc. The lack of understanding from everyone is all due to misunderstanding or rather a lack of understanding about her situation. Another gem was Connie's "threat" in one of the earlier episodes, without the dramatic music it is so obvious it wasn't hostile but more of a friendly almost familiar teasing she meant. But yeah, the lack of any real closure for everyone was just so... meh. Oh and her mother can just go and fuck herself.

I don't agree that Hanebado only sucked in the last two episodes. It failed long before that. So much time was wasted on irrelevant developments. Where on earth did this mens' subplot come from? Why were we supposed to care about that match beyond his association with meat girl? Stuff like that felt an awful lot like padding. There really isn't much to say about the ending. This match was never supposed to offer closure, but they forced it in there because they only had 1 cour. The whole effort over talent bullshit was also dumb because they're both obviously talented and both put in the work. I suppose I can take consolation in the fact that a continuation is basically impossible now. Well, at least this season let me catch up on my movie backlog a bit. Prilya movie was okay, but it lacked the oomph of the manga. Cool looking action scenes though. GuP Das Finale ep 1 was okay. But man, this movie series is going to take forever. The Night is Short, Walk on Girl was nice enough. Also absurd as hell and visually great. It felt like there wasn't much tying all the "arcs" together though - Tatami Galaxy was kinda similar, but it ended up having far more of a point/climax. + Show Spoiler + But yay for shitty musicals Kizu is The Hobbit adaptation of anime. Lupin Part V quietly had one of the best endings of any Lupin work, complete with a legitimately good twist. It's just a fun show, as always. ![]() On October 02 2018 12:56 Dark_Chill wrote: Asobie Asobase was weird. How was Planet With? I've got in on my queue now that it's done, and probably planning to binge it soon. Don't bother with Planet With unless you're really into Mizukami. The show doesn't really have the time to develop characters much, nor does it hit the emotional highs and lows he's known for.

First when the driver interrupted the answer to his question with "I knew that". The voice in the english dub was hilarious. And then when the villain boxed the groom. Glorious xD On October 03 2018 08:30 Spazer wrote: The Night is Short, Walk on Girl was nice enough. Also absurd as hell and visually great. It's just a fun show, as always. I think having a climax or a point where it ties all the loose ends together was one of the main reasons I liked Tatami Galaxy more than The Night is Short, Walk on Girl. The movie was a great experience but Tatami Galaxy came closer to the perfection of thoughtful story-telling imho. One day I will watch everything of Lupin. There just so many episodes... (for the record, I have only watched s1...)

Nah dawg. Next season is going to be Uchika eating rødgrød, Ayano talking to a therapist and Nagisa resting her knee and in the climax of the season start doing light training!
