If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

Something else that I feel a lot of anime do is the way things roll. It's always similar and it's done in other sports anime as well. Team gets together, they lose 1 season for whatever reason, fight or beat evil coach then eventually win finals or go to Koushien in the last year. I realize part of it is team building and going through obstacles, but would it actually kill an anime to break that mold? Finally, I also wish they actually went further than just getting to the Koushien. Why can't we see how Kou and Aoba's relationship develops or how they far they make it in the Koushien? Sure, that was the primary goal after all, but so many anime seem to stop at that point. Guess there's no point in going further if you battled the best team and accomplished the main goal, aka Wakaba's dream here.

Amusingly enough, this is one of those anime/manga where this doesn't really matter because it's only superficially about baseball. Most matches basically boil down to whether or not Kou turns on his Gary Stu genes. The strategy of the game is more or less nonexistent. Ashita no Joe is similar in that sense - the actual boxing is pretty garbage, but it's an outlet for the characters to express themselves.

Anyway, you're right that this particular trope happens a lot, but it exists for a reason. For baseball in particular, a loss is a big deal - these tournaments are single elim after all and Koushien is literally the biggest game in town. A loss in the qualifier basically means you're done. Suddenly, the third years that were developed over so many chapters have to be written out of the story. The author is extremely limited in how many losses the team can take. It's just the nature of school-based team sports, and baseball happens to be the most popular school-based team sport there is.

Losing's pretty rare in general because it tends to be a major setback plot-wise and hype-wise. Repairing the damage might take a manga a six months to a year IRL.

As for stopping at Koushien... that's pretty much a tradition. There are a lot of manga that end at Koushien. It's literally hallowed ground.

Also screw the main duo. Azuma deserved better.

hmm I see some of your points:
+ Show Spoiler +
My point was that instead of it taking them 3 years to get to the Koushien, why not make it take 2? My problem is that it almost becomes predicable how things will go. It's not just limited to baseball, other sport anime that I saw do something similar. I know why they do it, just kinda wish an anime breaks that trope and makes them win in their say, second year then repeat in third year.

Yes, I realize it's hallowed ground and I guess it becomes hard to outdo what's been shown already. I mean, the last game of Cross Game was supposed to be extremely tense etc... How much more tense can the Koushien even get? Probably hard to express. It's mostly just something that I wish some anime did. Kinda like how some romcoms end when the two main characters finally confess/get together after 11-12 episodes of stumbling over themselves. It's one of the reasons that I liked shows like Itazura na Kiss, continuity and seeing the characters develop even further. Sadly, it doesn't seem like a lot of anime will go further and most folks are fine with it as is.

haha ya, they never really touched more on Azuma's love. Aoba was just surprised at first, then never even considered his feelings after that first time. He seemed ok with it though he was more happy for his brother finding happiness considering he was responsible for him quitting baseball. At least we got to see bits of Aoba's dere by the end, not enough!

You know an anime I'd like to see more of, World Trigger. All the canon episodes were really cool and the amount of characters presented was massive, but they had different personalities for the most part. Anyone know if there have been any plans for a second season?

The manga has been on indefinite hiatus for ages, so probably never.
I remember dropping the anime partly because it was boring and partly because it was more of a slide show than something actually animated.
From the Ghastly Eyrie I can see to the ends of the world, and from this vantage point I declare with utter certainty that this one is in the bag!

Oh, what happened? Writer got bored or sick? The anime was a fun watch, even if the pacing could've been picked up so this is sad to hear.

Fairy Tail, Double Decker, Golden Kamuy, Karakuri Circus, and maybe Release the Spyce. May check a few others but those are the couple I'm looking forward to the most (TG is a given)

Steins Gate 0 has been rightfully criticized for parts of it's run but damn...
That episode just made me forget about all of it and shows why it's such a great series.

After all that emotional suffering, the payoff in this episode is so dang satisfying and hype.

Adachi series are basically always better as manga. They're primarily slice-of-life, pseudo drama series with sports (mostly baseball) as the framing device.

Cross Game was about coming to terms with the loss of Wakaba, and reaching the Koushien was basically the finish line for that.

Plus the manga ended on 160 chapters, so there's that.

I think H2 is the only one of his series that actually includes the Koushien. Nine includes one or two rounds.
Average means I'm better than half of you.

1) Uchika is still oblivious to how much she hurt her daughter despite it being so obvious.
2) Kentaro's favoritism is starting to piss me off. Why didn't he listen to was it the reporter or other coach, that if he couldn't handle Ayano he should seek help? He obviously cant, which is perfectly understandable he's dealing with someone that needs a mental therapy more than anything.
3) "First point is significant psychologically", maybe if it's your first tournament, league or cup game lol.
4) Nagisa starts to play suuuuuper standard 101 basic badminton to "counter" Ayano.
5) Everyone is amazed about said 101 badminton.
6) The supposedly mega talent Ayano that just recently crushed a world renowned talent doesn't know how to play against what is the first type of badminton you learn once you have the basic shots down.

The only way 6) makes sense is if Ayano doesn't take the match serious at all, just like what she did to Serigaya. Which doesn't make sense since there's never been any reason for Ayano to hold Nagisa in such contempt.

I'm amazed about how much BS they could cram into a single episode. It anoys me to no end how the show started off somewhat realistic in regards to badminton and now have turned into shounen "hardwork triumph everything!" bullshittery. It's now obvious how it's going to end Nagisa will win a close 3 set game and Uchika will have some ludicrous excuse they for some reason accept.

This hyperbolic time chamber plot armor they have suddenly given Nagisa doesn't do her character justice and she's without a doubt going to ruin her knee. Why do they have to ruin the best character so much.

Ayano should easily crush Nagisa from what we've seen in the last 10 episodes why couldn't she simply be moved by Nagisa's bravado instead? Why do Uchika have to be redeemed and let Ayano realize she doesn't need anyones recognition? Why is Kentaro such an incompetent coach and not fired yet?

Aaaaargh

Elena manage to salvage it a bit + Show Spoiler +
with her realization and confrontation with Uchika (I hope)
. This show is just like Franxx, I loved it up until the end where it just straight up self-destruct.

finally went ahead and read up on shokugeki no Souma.

Two things, or perhaps three:

First of all, I really did enjoy the team shokugeki arc despite everyone else hating it.
Secondly, I do not like where this is going. The new elite 10 and most importantly the new head of the school is not something I'd want to read about.
And Thirdly, while I did enjoy it I enjoyed the anime way more than I did reading the manga. The whole food technobabble is just so much more heavily concentrated if you actually have to read it yourself instead of it being voiced by someone. As someone who mostly enjoyed it for the comedy rather than for the cooking itself the anime was just miles ahead for me. Yes we still had food technobabble in there but it never felt so overwhelming for me.

As a result I'll probably call it a day. Hope the anime returns to animate the rest of this arc and that's it for me. Don't think I'll continue reading. I might watch a potential 4th season if they animate past the team shokugeki but even that's a bit unsure given what I just said about the basics of this one.

9/10 for Steins;Gate 0
Adaption had it's issue (as did the VN anyway) but overall it was a very enjoyable ride. And I for one am glad they fixed a lot of the issues and holes of the VN.

Go binge it now if you were holding off, OVA will just be bonus since the VN was adapted entirely with ep23.

After months of deliberation I finally decided to check out Uma Musume on impulse, since it's full of cute grills:

>MC gets groped in the first five minutes
>It happens again
>At the end of the first episode she decides to let the groper become her trainer so that she can participate in races and advance her goals

I guess the lesson is that if some creepy guy rubs your legs and looks up your skirt/down your shirt that's not cool. But if he then offers you a chance to advance your career, you should take it. Is this the kind of message we want to be sending to our young women?

...I guess that's not too unrealistic? Sadly. Tfw Uma Musume is actually an insightful and poignant commentary on human workplace culture...
