However, this does not mean they are harem anime. Sao and monogatari are mostly shows with harem elements.

His sister in Cavalry does have a romantic interest in the MC... Maybe that changes later but so far that's the case. Also, fake harems don't necessarily need the character to directly crave for the MC's dick. It's also ok if the show tries convey the vibe while not being open about it.

And yeah a harem doesn't need to end as a harem. But in cases like SAO and Clannad the other girls never stood a chance against the main girl, that's the difference.

Clannad is a bad example because the anime can't account for routes. The fact that tomoyo after exists proves that other girls can compete.

Having a clear favorite has nothing to do with being a fake harem. Strike the blood is most definitely a harem anime at its core and you already know himeragi wins. Love hina, the original harem classic, has a clear favorite. It's only very recent that harem series even have harem ends.

Monogatari is more "fake harem" because even though it's a singular(mostly) with large female cast where some of them are romantically interested it has settled the romantic aspect of a harem at the start of the show. Hmmm maybe it is about Betaness. Harems need to meet 1 of 2 criteria to work.

1) MC doesn't sleep with any of the girls
2) Girls are fine with MC sleeping with other girls

First one I guess you could say it doesn't hold true as long as they don't find out but sleeping with 5+ girls with none of the finding out while they all throwing themselves at MC seems suspect.

So yea you need a beta MC to make sure (1) doesn't happen since any male with any kind of social skills would just be fucking at least one of those girls with the way they go after MCs dick in harem shows. Then again in the Monogatari example it was all the alphaness of the girl that sealed the deal.

DxD is also interesting as the MC does want to sleep with all the girls and they want to sleep with him while not minding if others get in on there(mostly). He also sleeps with multiple naked women pushing their genitals on him every night yet in spite of all this he hasn't even gotten a handjob. Issei may just be the biggest Beta male in existence.
