If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

NGNL may be the most overrated show to come out in the last 10 years lol.

Haha, the classic "no taste" argument. Remember that we're still only watching japanese cartoons, not like we can boast elite cultural taste either.
Anyway, MAL ratings are like any ratings, they just represent what most people think about the show. I still think they give a pretty good idea of the show's quality, but not really if you'll like it or not. For that you look for recommendations from people you trust ;D.

That's what makes it remarkable. Ok I forgot Shigatsu is viewed as the most amazing thing ever. That may just edge out NGNL.

edit: ROFL Ok shit I take it back. Shigatsu is ranked 13!. That so takes the cake. I apologize for my earlier misinformation!

Why can't MAL ratings be both shit and helpful at the same time?

Toad you misunderstand. I enjoyed NGNL like I enjoy DxD, trashy ecchi dumb fun. That doesn't mean I think it's the best thing ever lol. I remember the internet when that thing was airing. Every day posts about how amazing it is then fanart everywhere and on the day it airs holy shit just crazy people everywhere.

Shigatsu is/was way worse. I don't know why I forgot about that.

I think the one thing MAL can be used for is to see if something is completely and utter shit since 98% of all shows on MAL are rated above 5 it takes a pretty bad show to go below a 5.
So it's a useful tool for evading that 2% that's probably utter shit, i guess.

No one takes MAL seriously because most people use their scoring system in their own way so you get barely any consistency. The only thing that it is useful for is seeing what shows were super popular or really hated by the community.

more like... if it's below 7:

It's not going to get much worse than that.

I guess below 7 makes sense considering the majority of the MAL users don't use any numbers outside of 7-10

90+% of anything airing in a season is scored at 7 or above.

It is heroes like me who rate shit like School Days the way it is supposed to be rated. A 2 out of 10. You're welcome

Well, I don't continue watching shows that I would rate below 7, and I'm not gonna bother rating something I didn't watch, and I guess a lot of people do like me. It's not like people are misusing the rating system, it's just that it doesn't really work in the first place.
In the end it comes down to not investing a lot of time in watching something you don't like.

Back when I had a lot of time on my hands, I watched pretty much anything, and that's where you'll find my sub-5 grades ;D

An XKCD strip for every occasion!
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Personally i feel it's a waste to rate things at all if you're only going to rate things that are good, but that might just be me(No different than the people who rate everything 10 or everything 0, basically imho).
For me it's basically:
+ Show Spoiler +

1: actually unwatchable (haven't used this score)
2: horrible
3: bad
4: mediocre
5: average - anything below 5 is where i drop shows on the spot unless i have a reason for finishing it (watching it with a friend or something like that)
6: decent
7: good
8: great
9: amazing
10: master piece

I only have 2 shows scored at a 2 though, takes a shit ton for my to have picked something up that i disliked that much to begin with. Other than that it's almost a bell-shaped distribution of scores for me with something a bit above 6 being the mid-point.

I watch lots of shows I rate at 5 or 6, sometimes even 4 if I just happen to like the setting / genre despite thinking it's below average from an actual point of how good it is.
I mean 5 is average, right? So if I like the genre because I like comedy or whatever you're into chances are you're going to watch it. 6 is already above average, so if I went out of my way to actually watch it in the first place I'm most likely going to stick with it as well because there's something that made me watch it.

Example:
Yamada-kun is a 5 out of 10 for me right now, although that should be upgraded to 6 out of 10 with the last 2 episodes.
Nisekoi is a 6 out of 10 for me right now because season 1 was just waaaaaay better so far.

And I enjoy watching both shows. I wouldn't drop them but they're just not anywhere as good to me as the stuff I have rated 7+

I rarely include shows that are below 5 on my list (if I just happened to power through it I still do). Otherwise they go into the dropped list and I don't bother scoring those. Then there is shit like School Days that I don't even dignify with a place on my list.

Well, I would rate Yamada a 6 and Nisekoi a 6 too. The difference between you and me is that I just stopped watching those because I don't have time for 6-rated shows even if I enjoy them. Point is, I could do something I enjoy more in the meantime.
What I'm watching now: Kekkai Sensen, Arslan, Oregairu, Assassination Classroom, and I feel confident in saying that for most people these are easy 7+ shows. My 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 are basically equivalent of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 stars for shows I have the time to watch :D
