It's not really that much better than before. Kuwabara's and Yusuke's fights are still boring as hell because it's the usual battle shounen style aka stall as much time as you can to fill the episode with pointless shit. Though I must say I love Hiei's and Kurama's fights. Mostly quick, with impressive technics, wicked and sacrifices. But in the end, from my perspective this is a big fat filler arc as it doesn't progress the story in any way and the character personalities only a little bit. The only thing that happens is that they become stronger....

I'm sad that Botan is only a side character. She should be a fucking main character with Hiei and Kurama. Kuwabara could be some side character for funny smack talk with Hiei.

The space battles do get better once the Alliance tries to invade the Empire. They still aren't great, but they are more than one scene battles of ship combat and go beyond ships pew pew. Story is still great, I like all the twists and storytelling. RIP Kircheis one of the better characters. I expected them to go with Oberstein corrupting Lohengramm so much that they no longer acted as friends. I also expected Lohengramm and Yang to have a romance plot and while there have been hints nothing major has happened yet.

The only thing I have a problem with is the axe battles replacing gun battles. I have no problem with technology made useless by other technology. There was a throwaway line about how electronic warfare developed then jamming technology followed making it obsolete so space forces had to rely on visuals like the old days. They first did it with the Rosenritters capturing Iserlohn Fortress by using a gas that makes it so gun users explode if they fire a gun so the defenders and attackers had to use axes. In later battles they just go straight to axes without even checking for the gas and even when having the gas would be difficult such as the space fighting outside Iserlohn. If the gas is so widely available that guns are useless then you would think there would be a technological weapon that doesn't use guns that beats axe users, like maybe a robot with axes or even other melee weapons like lances and shields.
