I gotta say that Kenshin was definitely a mixed bag, especially compared to my memories of it. I remember watching Kenshin years ago, and overall thinking it was pretty solid. Thats only half true, now. The first... I dunno, 30 episodes or something, were all soooo dull. There was like maybe 3 or 4 good episodes in that 30 episode stretch. The rest was stupid filler, or Kenshin just taking a huge dump on everyone. But then all the sudden, Saito shows up, fucks up Sanosuke, and the quality of the anime skyrockets. Saito Hajime single-handedly turned Kenshin from boring to really good. What a god. And it kept up the quality, with various ups and downs, up to the end of the Kyoto arc. I guess I'll rewatch Trust and Betrayal next. I remember that OVA being excellent, and then I'll be done with Kenshin animes. Might read the last parts of the manga afterwards, IDK. I watch Kenshin till the end of Kyoto arc at least once a year, even the early arcs have their place even if they're a tad slow but when the whole Shishio business starts and Saito shows up is when I get really hype.
I demand a full remake of the anime with the proper flashback and final arc, sadly, I can only hope.

On a semi-unrelated note, do you have a MAL account? I'll show you mine if you show me yours ! + Show Spoiler + What other mecha stuff did you watch/not like? According to your MAL, the only mecha stuff I can see on your list are Knights of Sidonia, Scryed, and TTGL, and two of those three were rated well.

I dunno dude, the only arcs pre-Saito that were any good was like 2 episodes of Jinei, 2 episodes with the Oniwaban, and Sanosuke's introduction. Beyond that its Sumo wrestlers, circus freaks, a really dull and boring arc with Raijuta, and an even duller and more boring arc with pirates.
I feel like if they remade the anime, they could have Saito showing up and fucking up Sanosuke by like episode 6, and nothing of value would have been cut.

And man holy shit at the Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya in S2. That scene in episode 13 did not expect it to go that far lol she is such a bitch.

You and I also have pretty low compatibility in general though according to MAL.
Well, Baka to test i had an extremely hard time getting into...i dont really know why, it just didn't fit well with me i guess. TTGL, I really hated the MC and his mecha. As for mecha I didn't like (i'm afraid to say this here but meh) I never could really get into the Gundams.
Bleach, I've been coming to realize is actually not as good as I once thought...possibly only like the first arc is any good, then it dramatically goes downhill.
BUT, I've never really gone back through and re-ranked things...I decided I'd put what i felt about it when i finished, and then leave it be, unless it's something that I really really really feel i need to change.
That being said, I'll reiterate, I loooooove like everything I've seen almost...It's hard for me to give anything a bad rating, and to me a bad rating is like 5 or lower. I also give ratings mostly based on my enjoyment/feelings of the show right after I've finished it...and since I've enjoyed almost everything i've seen I'll rate highly. I've also not seen a ton of shows, IMO, and I really don't like to compare shows at all (like i might like one aspect of a show A in a genre, but a similar aspect in show B of the same genre i don't like? ...i don't really know how to explain it)
Tl;dr : I'm a newb, and rate everything highly because of it (unless its baka...i really had to force myself to even finish that season)
edit: I'm also willing to give pretty much anything a try, so if there's something you feel like you really wanna rec...I'll add it and try it (and chances are i'll really like it) so even if our lists aren't compatible now...they might be eventually

That is fine, everyone is entitled to have their own tastes. I actually did like Bleach for the 1st part of it. I was just pointing out that it appears that our particular tastes do much match up well at all lol.

You should give Gundam SEED a shot.

Interestingly, Gundams are the only mecha shows I could get into and stick around to watch. Rest I find hard to want to keep watching.

So I just finished watching Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon. Probably would have dropped it if Miyuki Sawashiro didn't show up with some glorious reverse trap stuff. Anyway felt the world was pretty cool so was trying to look at the novels but I'm really awful at LN stuff. Has anyone here read them and if so are they any good?
|
Source is great, Kawakami is honestly the only one who writes bullshit like this and keeps it entertaining to read without needing to facepalm while doing a ton of worldbuilding. Genesis series is pretty bloody long and ongoing though.
Also Seijun's charm has like nothing to do with reverse trap.

The novel (aka blunt weapon) is great, but the anime is INCREDIBLY condensed does little except leaving you confused. There are 7 vols out, which first season of anime covers vol 1, second season covers vol 2. First vol is translated in Eng AFAIK, and portions of other vols. You can find all the current trans at http://baka-tsuki.org/project/?title=Kyoukai_Senjou_no_Horizon (seems bakatsuki is down atm though).
Unless you read Japanese don't expect to get far, as no one is suffer enough to translate them. Because + Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://1-media-cdn.foolz.us/ffuuka/board/a/image/1338/04/1338043953849.jpg) the 4 books at the bottom row are vol 1 + 2, which are 2 of the shorter vols to date (top row is Owari no Chronicle, author's previous work).

Thanks for the info and yea Seijun charm isn't about the reverse trap, just thought it was funny. She's boss either way.
Those look like full sized novels. Why are they called LN then?

The designation at this point is used to describe anything that uses an illustration that's kind of anime-like for cover. That and however the publisher wants to market it. So we get awkward stuff like classifying LoGH and Arslan senki as light novels while Monogatari series are under Kadokawa's more 'serious' division and treated as paperback novels.
I think it is often confused that LN = novella = shorter than novel. Instead it is just a designation that the publishers cooked up from nowhere.

I think it is often confused that LN = novella = shorter than novel. Instead it is just a designation that the publishers cooked up from nowhere. Didn't know there was a distinction between "normal" LN and paperback novels. The sales-figures on MAL or any other english speaking source I know of don't seem to care:
Japan's Weekly Manga and Light Novel Rankings for Jun 23 - 29 [...] Light Novels and Anime/Manga related books: [...] I guess it's the part at the very end. LN's and Anime related books
GOT DAMN IT, they really pushed back moeboats to Fall season...

Ah k that makes a lot of sense thanks. The Horizon anime peaked my interest as it reminded me a lot of Malazan Book of the Fallen. The whole massive world that you know almost nothing about. That kind of fantasy is always interesting is written well. Is the Novel also on that page ragz_gt?
I'm most likely going to get a new kindle this year as last one broke. Would some LN work decently on it or should I just stick to PC/Tablet if I want to read them? Seems I'm kind of bombarding with questions lately but really interested in this now :<
|
The thing about reading LN's on bakatsuki is that you can't read them for an extended period without getting a headache because they're usually translated awfully. I don't know who's translating those things but it's sketchy and the amount of people who are very good at both japanese (or chinese) AND english is probably very limited, especially if you factor in the desire to translate something for free.
Long story short: even if something is translated over there, it's going to be a hell of a weird read.

If we are talking about things in JP or CN. China does some real work with LN and has most things in epubs. There are also a decent amount of txt available so Kindle is fine.
If we are talking about English. lol good luck you can probably learn JP/CN/KR faster and read it in a less sketch language.
And what do you mean by 'Is the Novel also on that page'. What page. Bakatsuki?
EDIT - Crest translation on Bakatsuki looked legit. I might've just been hugely impressed with the use of baronh though o/

Yea. He said the Horizon vol 1 and others were on there but the page is down so I can't see if the Novel he mentioned is also there.
edit: English most likely. Looking to learn Mandarin but that won't happen for awhile

He only mentioned Horizon vols. Unless you are talking about the pic with Horizon size comparison to AHEAD series. The latter is probably hopeless.
I still think adapting Horizon before AHEAD was a stupid idea but meh.
You can probably learn Chinese and read the Chinese fantrans of Genesis series faster than English translation would get anything half legible done.
