Bebop actually failed miserably in Japan. It was only mildly successful in the U.S. FMA:B had its moments of darkness, and it always had those very moments lingering in the background which is what drove the story. The compelling story and the laughs were a nice touch, but it was the darkness which was the backbone.
If FMA:B now qualifies as "dark", then why can't Log Horizon? lol
cos in FMA:B the main character gets his arm ripped off and his brother loses his whole body with blood splattered all over the place from the get go. And LH you get lolis calling you master, random busty girls roleplaying overly friendly retards who hugs everyone & no fear of death due to respawns. Big difference quite evidently.
Let us reflect how a loli ghost of your childhood crush that only you can see and speaks to you childishly made AnoHana amazingly dark.
Oh wait I know, she is dead, that's why it is dark!
Its very dark, but also very deep. You have to look outside the box. Try rewatching it.
I'd like to say that right back to you, but instead of rewatching, watching past the first two episodes of Log Horizon probably helps.
Not gonna happen. If an anime doesn't draw me in after the first 2 episodes, then it doesn't deserve more. But hey, maybe im missing out? who knows? But we all know 12 months from now when we got SAO2, SnK s2 & FateZero 9000 to bitch about, all this LH rubbish will be long but forgotten.
It'd be a dark day for anime watchers that's for sure... all that shit they gotta wade through.
Attack of Titan is so deep though. It's actually a metaphor for America's dependence on foreign oil.
Wow, now that I know that, the anime is so much better than I thought it was.

Thanks for enlightening me, Felicia.
My heart beats a little bit faster every time you call me that. <3

Ferrose the god. Opening my eyes to the DEPTH that is Attack on Titan.

Also, Anohana is not dark, anyone who says that doesn't know what they are talking about. I loved the show but I'm not delusional enough to throw it in with other actual dark shows rofllet'sberealdon'tbestupid

I liked it for a while there, then the MC was just always such a whiny little shit. guess its not for me!

Anohana might be the only show that you like that I don't like. qq
Idunno, I tried watching it twice but I could never get past episode seven. =/
Someone care to explain what's with the hate on SnK? lol. I'll admit I never watched/read Claymore which is apparently similar to SnK in some ways but I don't think SnK is anywhere near as bad as some people in this thread say.

Still cant believe how underhyped this series is. Seems to be the true hidden gem of 2013/14.
I dunno if it's underhyped or not but I for one am greatly enjoying the series and hope there's more seasons to come. I'm pretty excited to see the battle from the first episode of season 2
Yeah it certainly is underhyped. Probably more so overshadowed by SnK, Log Horizon, KLK, Outbreak Company. Personally I dropped Log Horizon, KLK and Outbreak Company, thought they were utter rubbish. They just seemed like a whole bunch of random scenes scrambled together by a 5 year old. And while I did enjoy the more "intelligent" fighting of Log Horizon, I didn't like the fact they just jumped straight into it and the mundane fan service.
hmm I think overshadowed is a better wording than underhyped. I don't watch KLK and Outbreak company. Dropped KLK within 2 episodes (skimmed episodes 3 and 4 afterwards to see if it improves in my eyes, nope, same fanservice lol) and never tried Outbreak company. Used to watch SnK since I read the manga and enjoyed it with the dark atmosphere and such but being 20+ chapters ahead of current anime events eventually led me to forget about it. I intend to catch up after I catch up with the 4-5 SnK manga chapters I missed.
I'll have to disagree with you on Log Horizon. I read through the discussion on the previous page and I understand what you're saying. Yes, some animes should be dark and I agree that the atmosphere, music and even color tone can play a large role in its portrayal. If we take SAO as an example, first episode, everyone is stuck, panicking, worried about dying and never returning back to the real world and they are informed that death means you die in the real world but you need to finish the game to be able to return. We know the situation is grave and they did a great job of portraying it using some of the elements above. In comparison to SAO, LH seems to have a lighter color tone but people were panicking(debatable if more or less than SAO), you had PKs going on, towns were shut off from each other, there was lack of information(HUGE!) and at the time, no one knew that if you die, you get revived so no one tested it etc...
As you can see, there are some similarities and some differences but overall they decided to go to a different direction for the show which isn't a bad thing imo. I think part of the reason you didn't like LH was due to your expectations which weren't met. You expected LH to be SAO 2.0 (from your post) which is why you were disappointed. Here's a tidbit from the most recent episodes of LH. I think this might change your opinion: + Show Spoiler +
we found out two episodes back that if you die in LH, you can lose memories which might mean you forget about the real world. It's a different death to SAO and might not be as severe but by itself and with the lack of information its quite frightening. It's essentially amnesia from too many deaths.
Also, about the mundane fanservice, you referred to Akatsuki calling Shiroe her master as an example. I don't see the fan service in that lol. I don't know what their history is like and would like to know it so the crush seems out of place but I don't think it's that big of a deal breaker for the show. The show was also made to appeal to a younger audience which explains the art direction and possibly(?) the explanations of MMOs and such. I enjoyed the way SAO was done with the dungeon bosses and such but I also enjoy LH's direction even if at times it's a slow pace.
Magi is a beautiful anime and I like the story, its setting and how it progresses. I think they're doing a fine job when it comes to differentiating the characters, their intentions, the battles(Aladdin vs titus was freaking awesome! :D) and such and can't wait for more. Is it best anime of 2013/2014? I honestly have no clue. I've kept up with 10+ animes in the fall and will likely have around the same amount this time as well but I missed previous ones. If I consider the other animes and the genre we are dealing with(I'm thinking more action based on magic for magi), then ya it's best in my book but otherwise I can't determine what's best for me

It's not. The hated for SnK is backlash against people who say things like "I never watch anime but I'm watching <popular show of the season> and it's the best thing ever! Don't you guys all agree?!" After hearing that a dozen times, some people's reactions end up becoming "fuck that show and everyone who watches it; stop talking about it already."
People just don't think SnK was anything special so when they hear how "SnK is so awesome yous guys its the best of the best"! a hundred times they get annoyed. Happens to anything that gets "over hyped".

I guess I figured there was some other reason for the hate lol. thanks!
