I recently saw Steins Gate and Shin Sekai Yori and I thought they were both great. They both feature very real characters and a real story where real things happen and consequences crop up. Uchouten? Nothing f'ing matters. Kill someone? Nobody remembers/cares and everything is forgiven. Plot to kill someone? Laugh about it with your buddies after dropping them into a river. Seriously what the f was that? The reason as to why I'm being so emotional about this is because I feel like I wasted 4 hours of my time watching something I thought would be great but in the end fell completely flat. I read so many posts/reviews of this and they all said it was awesomely done and I just felt so betrayed.

I haven't watched Uchouten so I can't speak for it but we've all been there at some point. It's okay mang. There's always that one anime that we dislike/like that goes against the grain. ;___; I feel like SSY has a very small following and I dropped it around episode 6/7 for being super boring, nothing was happening, and I didn't want to keep going. Now people are telling me that it's super good. @____@

Also, there are very real consequences in Uchouten, just not expressed as straightforward as it was in SSY. On January 09 2014 05:36 Zergneedsfood wrote: I see. Never forget that the source won a SF prize that also awarded Eva, hue.

Well, I think for now as far as anime goes I'll just finish anime that I want to finish that I've already started but never finished. Feel bad that Uchouten is still at episode 3, and I watched the first episode of Aoi Bungaku a long time ago so it might be time that I finished that also. @_____@ I'll watch those I guess while I wait for Giant Robo/Kaiji to download. that show went to shit after like ep ~16 or so, whenever the third section began orz Are you talking about....FROM THE NEW WORLD? Oh, and speaking of realistic characters..... Someone on this other forum said that they watched Steins;Gate today and felt very sad since he is a scientist and doesn't have a cute tsundere in his office to fall in love with. It was a very awkward and sad moment....more awkward when considering that part of the reason he liked it was because it reminded him of how he didn't have Makise Kurisu in his office. So.....not sure if realistic....or every scientist's dreams.

I read so many posts/reviews of this and they all said it was awesomely done and I just felt so betrayed. OK first anime isn't real. Maybe you mean believable. It seems like you're viewing Uchouten in the context of... there are "bad guys" who've done "bad things" and that they need to be "punished" or face other consequences. That's fine, and it's also exactly the kind of extremely human attitude that the show attempts to isolate and compare to alternatives: the perspectives of tanuki and tengu. The tanuki by no means forget what wrongs are committed against them, but they don't return wrongs with wrongs in kind. Humans, on the other hand, are shown to be irrational, destructive, capricious, yet also capable of thought and remorse. Hotei's discourse on love struck me as exactly the kind of post facto self-justification that's both sad and universally human. The fact that regular murder of sentient life was taken in stride did bother me when watching the show. But the fact that it bothered me did not make the show bad, in fact I'd rather watch a show that makes me think about what it's trying to do than a show that's completely boring and obvious. And of course the only developed character shown to do wrong with no second thoughts ends up shamed, powerless, and alone, the last of which is probably the worst fate in the context of the show.

But I also enjoyed Uchouten a lot. It might have helped that for a while I actually thought the show could end up being kind of brutal in a way.
