I'd rather stick to what the original creator envisioned. To me, the anime/movie is an expression of his/her story so watching movies not handled by him/her could mean a deviation from that storyline he had in mind. If he gave it a thumbs up and says it fits into the macross universe then I'm more interested in watching it. I guess a common example is GT. I watched it but didn't like it and don't consider it canon either.

why do you think "non-canon" means "not handled by the original creators"?

non-canon is material that doesn't come from main author, that's how I see it. If the author worked on something or gave their approval, then I see it as canon. Case in point: I stick to manga facts over anime facts(in Naruto and soon enough Arpeggio). I'm not sure how to answer your question, partially because I'm confused as to what you're asking lol but I think this might be what you're looking for? original creators are the source and thus canon, non-original without approval are non-canon. I'm not sure if I got your point though.

On episode of 3 of Chuunibyou. I want to join Kumin Tsuyuri's nap club ~ ~ She's definitely my favorite character so far. She and Oreki belong together.

I'm also going through all the first episodes of the other shows you guys recommended to me Thanks again.

PS is Toaru Majutsu no Index worth watching or is it cheesy shonen battle shit? The lame monologues made me stop watching around episode 5.

Index is has more lame monologues, so if you don't like it, wouldn't be worth your time.

my point is non-canon material oftentimes comes from the original author, so I don't know why you think it means it doesn't.

I'm not sure I follow you. Macross isn't a manga adaption, and doesn't have one "author". Macross is a franchise like Mobile Suit Gundam. And like Gundam, the series has gone through multiple directors. In fact, the original creator and director of Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tomino, has had nothing to do with the majority of Gundam titles (including, for instance, Gundam Wing).

I consider Macross to be my "home" mecha franchise (seeing as how the original was technically my first anime, and also one of my all-time favorite animes), so I know quiet a bit about it. I think this might help out a bit in understanding Macross, its universe, and the different anime that make it up.

There are two companies primarily responsible for Macross, Big West, and Studio Nue. Big West has been the main sponsor for ever single iteration of Macross. Studio Nue was the studio that was financed to produce the original Macross, and later on DYRL, both of which were considered classics. Director wise, the original is credited to Noboru Ishiguro, while DYRL is mostly credited to Shouji Kawamori. After DYRL, Ishiguro pretty much left the franchise, and at the time, Kawamori wasn't interested in making sequels. Studio Nue was done with Macross, so Big West financed another studio to produce Macross 2. Macross 2 was a direct sequel to the original, set like 80 years after. Later, Studio Nue decided they wanted to do another, and Kawamori decided he would as well (who would continue to direct most of the following Macross titles). There is a lot of myth around "why" this changed happened, so I'll omit it. Macross 2 was officially designated an "Parallel World", and Kawamori made Macross Plus. To elaborate, Macross 2 is an AU for Macross. To put it in Gundam terms, Macross 2 would be like G Gundam, Gundam Wing, Gundam SEED, or any AU Gundam series.

Macross Plus basically started how pretty much all following Macross titles would function. It was set in the same universe as the original, but would essentially be its own, self-contained story. Macross Plus was basically Top Gun, far away from Earth, and other than a few references, was pretty much completely independent. Macross 7 came shortly after, the first TV Series since the original. Macross 7 actually shares several characters with the original, shares a few robots with Macross Plus, and even has a good portion of Macross 2's soundtrack put to use in it. Beyond these things, the story is (again) practically independent. The plot/premise of Macross 7 is virtually identical to Macross Frontier's premise. Macross Zero is a prequel to the original, and also shares some characters with the original. I think that Kawamori must have been taking lots of drugs when he made this show. Its more loony than even some of his later stuff like Aquarion.

At any rate, we get to Macross Frontier after Zero. And you watched it yourself, without any prior Macross knowledge, so you should know for yourself that it is also fairly self contained, with a few references thrown back to previous titles (although, it was mostly just reusing previous title's music). The most recent Macross anime thing made was Macross FB7. Breaking with the trend we have seen thus far, despite being the 30th Anniversary film for Macross, it wasn't directed by Kawamori, and Studio Nue had no hand in it (although Big West financed it, as always). As a movie, FB7 is pretty bad (basically its a movie about people watching a movie), but seeing as how it has the combined music of 7 and Frontier in it, I suppose that means it has the best music in the entire franchise.

Looking back on the franchise as a whole, there are many similarities we can see as to what makes a "Macross" anime. One is that Big West finances it. Another is that they are all based around the original Macross. They all have transformable mecha. They all deal with music as an important element to their plots. They all involve a love triangle of some sort. All of them have fairly good animation, save Macross 7 which looked like dog shit at times.

To add my commentary on this history of the franchise in relation to our current discussion, I would argue that the self-contained nature of every installment makes pointless the idea of watching for "canon". I would argue that the man behind Macross originally left the franchise after DYRL (Ishiguro went on to direct LoGH). I would argue that Macross 2 is thematically consistent with the rest. I would finally argue that 'canon' is independent from 'quality'. For example, Macross Zero is part of the main timeline, but I think its bad. Macross 7 is part of the main timeline, and TankLover expressed his opinion that it was bad. Finally, considering that it is officially a "parallel world", its probably my bad for even using the word 'canon'. I simply believe that if you are intending to watch the entire franchise, each installment should be given a fair shot. Anyway, hope this stuff helps you understand the franchise a bit better, if you plan to watch it all.

edit: holy shit whats wrong with me, writing so much....

^ quite the post lol but thanks for all the background information. I will read it all The whole manga thing was mostly in reference to other animes that are adapted from the manga, Naruto being one of those that I originally watched the anime then switched to the manga since I got tired of some of the arcs that weren't in the manga thus the whole non-canon thing I was talking about. I mentioned Arpeggio because I intend to read the manga in the near future and usually in these cases where there is an anime adaption, most people will discuss what's in the manga which was always considered canon and anything in the anime not in the manga would be non-canon. At least, that's how it's always been done to my knowledge.

As for Macross, yes, I was looking and realized that there was no manga or novels or anything that the original Macross was based off so it wasn't an adaptation and the whole idea of canon wouldn't work in that case. From what I see, the anime is all connected. I will have to read the rest of your post before I make any further comments though. Honestly, there is a ton of Macross animes/movies etc... to go through and I'm trying to avoid burning myself out since I'm marathoning them which is why I'm trying to avoid movies unless they are considered a must see and important for the story going forward.

edit: maybe you just like the series a lot thus the essay. Nothing wrong with that imo.

Skimmed the "Do you remember love?" movie. The graphics are gorgeous and clean as well although I saw a difference already from what happened after he took Minmay to outer space. Won't say much incase someone else here wants to watch it as well lol.

Is Manaka gone for good? I don't understand how they plan on rectifying her dying? WTF! I can't see them killing Kaname, Hikaru or Manaka although if Kaname died, at least Chisaki doesn't have to decide if she wants to love him back so to speak. I'm lost for words right now ...

On the subject of canon vs non-canon.

I usually don't watch the extra "non-canon" stuff like filler or movies because they don't contain anything worthwhile. I get everything I need in entertainment from the story itself and the added extra is just there if for some reason I have time to kill (which when it comes to anime/manga I always have plenty of things to watch). Fillers and movies are often bad because they are meant for spacing or money making purposes. Sometimes movies also just go off the deep end and clash mightily with the source material in bad ways (see Sora no Otoshimono movie).

Those are separate from different adaptations of the same material though. Like say when a LN series gets a manga and an anime there will inevitably be differences. When it comes to these usually I just pick whatever one I prefer best and make that "my own canon" for that series. Take Claymore for example, the anime ending was horrible horrible so its easy to say "well its not canon who cares" but what if it was reversed? The manga would still be considered canon even though it would have ended terribly.

ya, this is a better way of explaining what I meant, particularly the bold part. That's really my main concern when it comes to extra movies or extras. For discussion purposes, usually the main source(more times than not it's the manga) is the one that is considered canon and that most people will discuss although in the case for something like Macross, it's a little harder to pinpoint canon and non-canon.

Just finished watching Valvrave. Didn't realize this was the last episode so gonna miss watching it every week :/ + Show Spoiler +
Dammit Haruto! So disappointing to see him die at the end but I guess it's not unexpected. He was losing runes and his memory so I doubt they'll have him come back and try to form new memories with Shouko. At least they revealed the 101 council and Cain was dead. I would've liked it if they went into the war in Dorssia. They could've easily had another cour showing how the royalists took back Dorssia and how they found and hunted down the Magius.

Just watched the Gintama: The Final Chapter Movie. Really good original story. Funny, dramatic, action-packed. Captures the spirit of the show perfectly.
You should not have to pay to watch the GSL, Proleague, or OSL at a reasonable time. That is not "fine" and it's BS to say otherwise. My sig since 2011. http://www.youtube.com/user/dabom88

Yeah I absolutely laughed my ass off, such classic Gintama, hell the very first scene started making me giggle uncontrollably.

I hope that Sorachi-sensei never ends the series lol, the fun can never end.
